Thanks Snubby! It was a nice tour and the Edison film was awesome. I guess I didn't realize you were right on the border of Maryland on the Potomac. How far are you from D.C.?

Fascinating, Snub, thanks. Do you have any idea how long it's been since the canal was last dredged?
Never mind, I can look it up. But that's the kind of stuff that fascinates me.

Probably a coupla hundred miles. We're up near the northern end of Maryland.
Isn't the Patuxent River near Chesapeake Bay?

Snubby yes it is and right on the tip.
Interesting historical item for that area is that there was a Union Prisoner of War camp there, I have seen no remains of the camp but there is a Confederate Cemetary there which is taken care of by the state. I had forgotten that Maryland was part of the Confederacy during the war?

We have a place near Meyersdale in Somerset county ( on the Eastern Continental Divide)......we have the 3300 ft "Big Savage Tunnel" about 12 miles away...... part of the 330 mile "Great Allegheny Passage".....rails to trails ........from Pittsburgh to Washington.
Need to take a road trip to Paw Paw!

Yes, the history is fascinating. We forget that before the railroads, the canal system was pretty much it for transportation in the interior.
Notice how the path is pretty much "one horse only" through the tunnel. I once lived in Ohio near a preserved section of the Erie Canal. A historic marker in the park indicated where canal barge men would engage in fist fights if they could not amiably resolve who had the right of way and who had to wait. The whole town would turn out to watch.
