The Civil War - then and now...
I just came across a fascinating web site. It's an interactive photo album of some key views from the Civil War. It shows "then and now" photos of various locations. You can move a slider to see the old and new photos, or when it's in the middle position, both photos are overlaid for a composite. All the photos except the last (Fort Sumter) were taken from exactly the same viewpoint. Many things have changed, and a few look pretty much the same. Check it out - I think it will hold your interest, even if you're not a Civil War buff.

Interesting - great photos. I enjoy all history, and civil war history is no exception. I wish they had some photos from the western theater. I am less than 50 miles from the Vicksburg National Military Park, and there are also some interesting sights around Corinth, Mississippi (near the Shiloh NMP in Tennesseee). I would like to visit Antietam and Gettysburg some day. Thanks for sharing.

You can tell Mr. Levene put a tremendous amount of time and effort into that. Nicely done.

Many years ago, I visited the Fredericksburg Battlefield, where I first learned of the bravery and compassion of Confederate Sergeant Richard Rowland. The Union had advanced across an open field against Confederates who were entrenched behind a long stone wall. The resulting bloodbath left 8,000 wounded and dead Union soldiers lying on the field. In the aftermath, Sergeant Rowland couldn't tolerate the moans and cries of the wounded. He carried canteens of water and blankets to the wounded enemy for hours, while both sides held their fire. It was one man's gift of compassion and humanity in the chaos of war. I'm sure there are many more.

If you get down here in southern Mississippi you can tour Jefferson Davis home and see the tomb of the unknown soldier. Lot to see and learn about the the war against the northern aggressors. Jeff Davis great grandson I do believe lives in the home.
Course some groups might want to tear down the home and move all the graves some place else.

Enjoyed that. Thanks for the link. The term "Then and Now" in your title made me think of the way the true history of the Civil War has been rewritten over the years. Kind of like the way the changes shown in those pictures have occured, some subtle, some nothing like the actual. I've sure seen that living in Memphis where men such as Nathan Bedford Forrest were once looked upon with respect and honor but are now vilified.

Thanks; that was cool
Have visited a lot of Battlefields over the past 20 years .... Gettysburg to Fredericksburg....... and a fair number in between.
There has been a big push to restore Gettysburg to how it looked in 1863.
