Good use for dead socks?
Cleared out my sock draw of the orphaned and limp socks that were starting to accumulate. Now old T-shirts make good shop towels, but what can you do with old socks?

I use cotton sox in the shop, they are great for polishing and general wipe downs. Polyester are only good for tying a knot in and throwing for the dog.

Stuff it in the back of your open-backed banjo so the wife will let you play in the house.

I used holed sweat socks for gun cleaning. They're good for final wipe down.

I use old cotton socks to put my blued and nickel revolvers in, before putting them in the gun rug.

You're kidding right? Old socks make the best gun socks for handguns. Also they make for very nice lint cloths dusting cloths etc. Always have one ot two in the gun cleaning kit-one is saturated with grease and I use it as a final wipe down on shotguns-works just as good as that little bit of fleece you buy at the gun shop for $10.
Also, slip a bar of soap in one and you've got one whale of a weapon.

Not to mention... a couple rolls of quarters. (Ever see the movie... Death Wish? Bronson tries it... but uses one of those flimsy-thin dress socks. Whole end busts open... quarters (or dimes) go everwhere.)

Interesting, I would have thought many socks had too much lint/fuzzies for gun cleaning. As for using them as revolver cozies, I should probably try that.

Good suggestions so far!
Me, I hang them on the fence, which seems to keep old socks from coming around. 😉

I fill a heavy duty plastic bag with dry rice, sand, or pinto beans, seal it shut, and then slip that into an old orphan sock to make small sandbags for shooting and hunting - they are just the right size for putting on the window sill in a hunting blind.
Regards,
Dave

I stick my portable bluetooth speaker in one to protect it when traveling.
(The real mystery is what happens to missing orphan socks? They dissapear, capriciously and without warning,.... into the void, into an alternate universe somewhere, I suppose, where LVSteve's doppelgänger muses, "Hmmm. Wonder what I should do with this orphan sock....")

That works much better if you stuff a tennis ball in it first. You can throw it much farther away. Also, its a way of getting rid of "tired" tennis balls.

Make for a nice carry pouch. I used them for under the seat storage on bicycles for years.
Fill, twist, fold over again and strap under the seat.
Like others have said, a perfect mace too. Double the socks, fill with roll of pennies, apply as needed for relief from 'Din do nuffin' types.

For God's sake, man! Shoot them now lest the zombie socks rise!
(Would be an amusing parody of "The Walking Dead" 'tho.)
OK, maybe not that amusing, but it's raining cats & dogs here. Many days in a row. The mosquito hordes have carried off several purse dogs :O

I've been storing handguns in new cotton socks for over 20 years. Old "footsy" worn sock go in the trash.

There are tons of good uses for old cotton socks. I use them for finishing the furniture I build. I use wipe on poly and socks work great. They're also good for gun cleaning. I cut patches for bore cleaning and I use whole socks to wipe down my guns. Never let them go in the trash.

I use stray and old black, dark blue dress socks for thermos and water bottle camo/coozies in the woods hunting. Beats labels and shiny aluminum flashing about, helps with insulation and noise also. Just wash them first.

Take a heavy wool sock. fold over half way inside out, put a large bar of soap in it and stitch shut. Makes great camping wash cloth, also good for shop sink!

If my socks are dead, it's because my feet kilt 'em. I only pick them up with tongs, or wearing rubber gloves.
On a related note, my dogs keep eating the [seat] out of my dirty undershorts. What's up with that?

Stick am empty plastic water bottle in it, tie the top and give it to your dog for a chew toy. They love the sound & texture. Make sure you remove the cap & ring so they're not choke hazards...

Back in the day an oil soaked sock was a good way to put up a handgun for long term storage.

* Oil soak that weakling blown-out sock and stuff it in a tupperware to wipe down garage/yard tools after use.
* Wax up that shotgun/rifle stock. Toss on brush pile to burn.
* Clean/polish dies. Toss on brush pile to burn.
* Out of coffee filters? Nevermind...stupid weakling sock has a hole in it. Toss on brush pile to burn.
* Want to strain out a parts cleaning agent? Poor it on through that pathetic sock. Toss on brush pile to burn. Perhaps stand back when igniting this one.

Steve: I just returned from attending the "Big Reno Gun Show" where I saw one of the best uses of old cotton socks ever; A fellow vendor near me had a bunch of Winchester lever actions on display racks. People couldn't keep their hands off of them. Periodically during the day, this man pulled two old socks out of his 'kit' and put a little gun oil/preservative on one and put it on his left hand. He then put a dry sock on his right hand. He would pick a rifle off the rack and wipe the metal with the left handed sock and then finish by wiping off the entire rifle with the right handed sock. I learned something! I will be doing that at the next gun show I attend as a vendor. ............
