Bear protection measures...
I have a good friend who retired a few years ago from the U.S. Forest Service, where he had been a ranger for for most of his career.
We got to talking about bears - black, brown and grizzly. I asked him what was the best way to protect against them if one was not permitted to carry a firearm.
He told me:
"You could tie bells on yourself and carry pepper spray. That would tend to make most bears avoid you, and if necessary, spraying them could cause them to back off."
However, he said, it would be important to distinguish the types of bears that are in the area. Examination of bear feces would be a good way. For example, brown and black bear feces would contain nuts, berries, and insects.
"How about grizzlies?" I asked. "That's easy" he said. "Grizzly droppings will most likely contain bells and smell like pepper spray."
John

Snubby gave me this "anti-bear" medicine hat.
He swears it will work for me or I get my beads back.

You must not get in the woods very often. They're all over the country.

Something is wrong with my browser. I keep logging on to the S&W gun site and ending up on some bear site. Duh! Oh well I will log off and back on and see if that helps.

There is an old saying..rizzlies may attack but usually make a false charge..but if a black bear does attack you he will be serious and kill you..probably eat ya too. This was told to me by a Tlinglit friend in Alaska. Back in about 1969..His rifle for everyday carry was a Remington 722 in 222. I thought he had a death wish. Bear gun of choice is a Mossberg 590 loaded with slugs or a short bbld M-12 loaded the same way

Best way to reduce bear attacks:
Keep stupid people out of the woods.

That is like saying let's keep stupid people from having kids! Ain't gonna happen. I live near Yellowstone Park..You can't believe the stupid things people do "interacting" with the animals there. I actually had a Japanese tourist ask me what time they let the animals out in Yellowstone. He didn't want to believe they were "Wild" animals

That joke was old when I first heard it in the mid-'80s.

A .22 caliber semi auto saved me from a bear attack once. I used it to shoot my camping partner in the knee. At times I still miss her.

Timothy Treadwell (Grizzly Man) coulda used all this advice.
He always said he wanted to help the bears.
He ended up helping the one that et him by being converted to calories while the bear wandered around looking for some water to wash the taste of idiot out of it's mouth.

Bear's in the wood is where they belong. I was driving home after work, about 3:00 pm. I was going up a long hill near the top was a black spot on the road, as I got closer I could see it was a full grown male black bear, he was just sitting in the middle of the road. I waited 20-30 minutes for the old bore to move. he did smell pretty bad set there in the hot sun.

A lot of far-northern Native Americans used to favor the .222, but a great many have upgraded to .223 Remington. In the old days, a great many moose were killed with .22 Longs. I don't know why, but they seem to like light loads yet still bring home the meat.
