DECK PAINT QUESTION

Has anyone had experience with Armor Deck Paint ?

Yep, put it on this spring - so far so good. Just make sure deck is clean before applying. Used a roller and brush and applied two coats about two days between coats. Jury's still out on how it will handle winter here in New England.

Have not heard of it and it's made here in Florida. A niche market product.

You really want a Paint or a Stain??

Consumer reports recently rated the top brands.

Solid stains are a good choice for outside decks over paints.

Let me know if you want paint or stain and I will give you the top ratings,

Either way Behr has always been the top performer.

I've been in the paint business for 41 years. First, solid stain over paint or any stain over paint won't work. Stain has to penetrate the substrate, how is it going to penetrate anything with a coat of paint on it? If you put solid stain over paint and it worked then it wasn't solid stain, it was paint called solid stain. Second, I advise people to stay away from anything with the name Behr on it. Most of their products are awful, Their wall paint is the worst I've ever seen. Consumer Reports is well know to give five star ratings to the highest bidder. Contact the place a painting contractor buys paint, around here it ain't Lowes or Home Depot. The staffs are usually far better on paint problems than the morons at the big box stores.

My advise is to first read up on the Armor Deck Coating. Read what they say about solid stains on a deck. Though I'm not familiar with the product, most of what they say makes sense. I have found the main cause of failure on decks is moisture coming up from the ground, through the deck and popping the finish on top of it. Your deck sits high off the ground so that problem will be minimal. Decks that sit a foot off the ground will not hold any coating for long unless something is done to the bottom of the wood or it is built to let moisture out some way. I probably wouldn't hesitate to use this stuff if the price wasn't out of line. If they want $100 a gallon go find a stain called TWP. I've had more luck with it than anything else and since it doesn't appear that you have a finish on your deck their semi transparent stain would work great. First before you put anything on your deck drop a little water or paint thinner on it. If it soaks in you're fine, if it beads up whatever is making it bead up needs to be removed.

I did not mean how what I wrote came out.

I did not mean staining over paint, I meant solid stain is better compared to paint on a deck.

As far as CR giving out ratings based on bidders, you will need to provide proof of that. I have been a member of Consumers Union (reports) for many years, Their ratings are un biased and the car reviews are spot on. They have test data and reviews from thousands of members, you have your personal opinion.

How about Sherwin W, Bejamin Moore, Cabot, Clark Kensigton. Valspar??

So lets see Behr or a small, over priced ,no name company??

Behr holds up extremely well here in the sub topic climate. I have used it on 3 houses and wood decks.

Also I had looked up this Armor company so not sure which one the OP is looking at??

All the proof I need comes from my own experience as well as from what I hear from the hundreds of painting contractors I know, they all hate Behr products. Most of their stuff is too thick and coverage is mediocre at best so you have to use more of it. Touch ups are impossible so if Behr is ranked high by Consumer Reports we all figure the fix is in. You are right, that's my opinion as well as hundreds of others in the paint business around here. We test stuff with brushes, rollers, spray rigs and our customer's satisfaction. Couldn't care less how Consumer Reports does their tests.

Sherwin Williams, Ben Moore, and Valspar all have decent stuff. Ben Moore enamels are top notch, great flow. Their oil enamels dry looking and feeling like glass. SW makes decent products but their retail lines of paint such as Harmony or Duration are over priced for what you get. Valspar makes great varnishes, their paints are average. Had a bucket of Clark Kensigton in my hand today. Not impressed. Cabot makes a very good exterior stain, better than most.

By the way I started in the paint business as a painter, got to paint in Graceland back when Elvis was still around. Since 1985 I have worked for one of those small, no name companies, Farrell Calhoun. Look us up on the internet. Our prices are usually more reasonable than all of the above yet the quality is there. Like our competitors we have strong products and ones that well maybe aren't so strong. We constantly test our competitors paints and varnishes. I've sprayed and rolled a many a gallon of everyone's and yes I am biased. Never the less I would rate Behr's products constantly near the bottom when it comes to workabilty, touch ups, durability to scrubbing, fading and the service you get when buying it. Their color matching is awful. We see it and hear about it all the time.

And yes we've been approached by companies that rate stuff. IMHO all you had to do was buy a little advertisement in one of their publications and hey you've got great stuff.
