I admit, I've never been a fan of the city of Memphis. My grandparents were natives of the Memphis area before they passed on and my mother grew up there. We often visited the area as I was growing up in north central Arkansas and I spent a couple of summers there working with my grandparents business when I was a teenager. I always thought Memphis was a cesspool, an opinion that has not really changed through the years, although there are many surrounding communities that I really like, Collierville for example. But I digress . . . .

My wife and I ventured out of the Ozarks and journeyed over to Memphis to check out the new Bass Pro Shop in the Memphis Pyramid and to meet some friends for lunch there. I gotta tell you, the place is impressive. Until they recently built the new Bass Pro Shop in Little Rock, Arkansas, the closest Bass Pro Shop to me was the original one in Springfield, Missouri. The Bass Pro Shop in the Memphis Pyramid makes the other two look like convenience stores. Even if you're not into hunting and fishing supplies, it's a pretty cool place to browse through, the animal mounts and nature scenes alone are worth checking out. We enjoyed watching feeding time of the live alligators in the indoor stream, and we had to get some fresh made chocolate & peanut butter fudge.

We also rode the elevator to the observation deck and resturant at the peak of the Pyramid. While waiting for the elevator the nice young lady operator told us it was the largest free standing elevator in North America. From the observation deck I snapped the picture below of the Mississippi River looking west towards Arkansas on the far bank.

Lastly, we had lunch at "Uncle Buck's Grill" on the lower level. I highly recommend the "Buffalo & Blue Chicken Sandwich" which was pretty darn good.

That's probably the nicest thing in Memphis.
I lived there for a few months and thought the town should have fallen into the Mississippi.
I worked at Graceland Chrysler Plymouth, down the street from Graceland.

The sandwich looks tastey

Be forewarned.

My daughter lives there. When I visit, I increase the number of concealed handguns, from one to two, or more.

My experiences with Memphis coincided with my attendance at ASU in Jonesboro. Occasionally we'd drive over for a Doobie Brothers concert, or hang out in Overton Sq., find a Shakeys Pizza. I didn't mind it too much but I had friends from W. Memphis and Crawfordsville that could guide us around the rough spots. That was also over 45 yrs. ago. Wow, where does the time go?

Lived in Memphis my whole life. In the 40s and 50s Memphis was often awarded the title of cleanest large city in the United States. It's school system was admired throughout the country. It is now a filthy, dangerous, uneducated dung mound. The majority of residents sit on their duffs waiting for their government checks while the working folks are taxed to the hilt.

The Pyramid was one of the big boondoggles our illustrious city government brought forth. We still owe money on it. It was a terrible sports/concert venue. Thank God for Bass Pro. Lets hope the City of Memphis keeps their hands out it.

The City of Memphis could screw up a ball bearing as well as a *** dream.

Grandparents and my mom were from there. Grandfather worked at Firestone for 33 years.
Remember mom and dad sending me there every summer (grandpa was a die hard Memphis Chicks baseball fan - and so was I) Went back to N Watkins to see my grandparents old house a couple years ago (while attending a family funeral) while in town. All I can say is... Sure ain't what it used to be. Some of my best memories as a kid were in Memphis. Especially at Tim McCarver stadium and Liberty Land.
And yes I was there the night Bo Jackson hit a ball over the inflatable Miller Lite can in left field (during BP).
Stadium was the most packed I had ever seen and didn't know why till grandpa told me who was playing that night.

A friend of mine and his wife made a trip to Florida a little over a month ago and on the return trip they stopped at the Bass Pro Shop Pyramid in Memphis and they really enjoyed the place. They mentioned the elevator you spoke of.
