Adding cents to bids works!
I was bidding on a S&W handgun and when I bid, I always add cents to the bid so it is never an even dollar amount. I just won it by being $0.26 higher than the highest bid. The other person ran the bid up to the dollar amount I bid but my bid was just $0.26 higher than the even dollar amount they bid. So since my bid was higher, I won the handgun.

It's true, i have used that same tactic on ebay and won many things. It is also important to know the value of the item so you don't pay too much. I have seen people over pay many times just so they "win". :-D

I won the bid on an airplane like that one time. Sealed bids and I won it by 51 cents. It was an abandoned Cessna 310 sitting on an Airport. Opened the door...patted the seats and thought I was gonna get a buzz from cocaine dust. Turns out it was just....dust!! Darn it!

I'll tell ya what's really fun. Run a bid up as far as you DARE then let the other fool overpay. I love it when egos get involved with business. And no I haven't been forced to overpay for something I really did not want.
As for my serious bidding, I make one bid, the max amount I'm willing to pay for an item. I then walk away from the bidding, the auction site will let me know if I won or lost the auction.

What Fred said, I'll put a max I'm willing to spend and then walk away. Won a few, lost a few. Just the way it goes.

You mean adding dollars won't work. No wonder I keep losing those auctions.

I like to add a penny to an even dollar amount and have won a few things by that penny.

I never bid in even amounts - doesn't always make me the winner, but works some of the time.
On one GB auction, the seller (dealer) posted a note that asked bidders to only bid whole amounts
I couldn't believe it. That was the only auction I've ever seen do something so silly. Besides, he can't enforce his rule anyway, and I would have bid my extra penny if I was interested. Nothing he could do about it.
