Turkey gun for the kid
My 22 year old, a competent shooter, has not shown an interest in hunting till recently. He was home from school over the weekend and started talking about squirrels, so I took him to Walmart to get papered up legal. Offered him a lever or pump .22 out of the home stock but he said he'd just take his single shot Stevens Favorite, which I gave him when he was like 8. Gave him a brick of ammo and reports taking 4 squirrels in the woods up near Flagstaff yesterday.
Then he mentioned putting in for the spring turkey hunt. I haven't hunted turkey since I wasn't much older than him, but he has an uncle that goes every year and knows what he's doing so he'll take him if he's drawn.
Thinking about getting him a shotgun. All he has is a SS .410. When I googled Turkey and shotgun all these goofy looking (not that I have an opinion) pistol gripped camo tactical looking shotguns came up. As I recall we all used our M10s, M97s and 870s, I used my dad's Remington 16ga. auto. We always got turkeys. Thinking of giving him my model 10 as he can use it for much more than all these new specialized shotguns. I can't imagine using a pistol gripped gun on doves flying straight over head. He appreciates the traditional, but I'm still wondering if he'll be disappointed not having a tacti-cool boomer. Any ideas?
