I like truck stops

The Flying J on I71 and Rt 36-37 is a DENNEY'S restaurant. We just ate there yesterday..............I had the spicey skillet dinner with coffee. They have one heck of a breakfast menu..........lots of choices. In my duck hunting days we'd be on the road at 3-4:00am and took advantage of their hospitality.

Couple of years ago the wife and I were caught in a snow squall at night on I77 while towing a 29ft fifth wheel camper. Snow was blowing sideways driving me crazy. Trucks had blinkers on travelling 25mph.........I HAD to find a pull-off NOW. Just then an exit ramp appeared with a Flying J. We pulled in, parked, had a great breakfast at the counter exchanging stories with other travelers, and spent the night in the parking lot.

Nothing pretentious about these places. If you go away hungry it's your own fault.

Nothing like a large plate of chipped beef on toast...

Sometimes it's your friends fault though.

Was on a road trip when we hit this greasy spoon in plainsfield Wi ...
My friend made the Ed Ghin connection ...
His colorful remark was not well received by staff that overhead it.
At this point, despite the reasonably well populated menu, the only thing available was an extra large order of door.
Never take that dude anywhere remotely interesting unless he's dead stonessober.

I agree that the food is usually pretty good, but being a neighbor of a truck stop isn't much fun.

I'm sure a few bad apples ruin it for the whole bunch but I work next to a truck stop and really get tired of piss bottles being thrown in our yard. Not to mention truckers that bring their dogs to **** on our lawn.
Truck stops might be ok, but I am not a fan of truckers.

No, but....

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Don't they have transportation? :D

No, but they can usually get about anything they want.

Mostly the people around truck stops don't put up with **** and are safe, but perverts like them for the transient atmosphere. The problems is that there are usually enough witnesses around besides the fact that many of the truckers are regulars and they know most everybody there and a strange vehicle stands out like a sore thumb.

PS. A cheery waitress is a godsend for people away from home and living mostly on the road. It doesn't hurt if they are cute or more than cute but even the cheery old gals are a fun break. Entertainment usually doesn't cost extra. There was a diner in town with three crazy women running the place that was like going to a movie. Even if you didn't like the food it was entertaining with the 'local color'.:)

In '79 I lived close enough to an interstate with a truck stop about 2 miles away. The ladies had channel 16 on the CB reserved for their appointments. I had a sideband base station then and could easily pick up on their chatter and special discounts when things were slow. Unfortunately they made no home deliveries.

Hay it was only two miles away. :D

Every time I visited my mom in Maine and asked if I could take her out to dinner, she always wanted to go to the Irving Gas station diner. They served real food liked turkey, mashed potatoes with gravy and a vegetable. Then there were the 15 or so homemade pies to choose from. Since Maine is famous for blueberries, that was always high on my list.

I remember asking a long haul trucker once how he chose which place to stop at to eat, he replied "I look for a place where all the cars are parked, that usually means the food is good". :D

Have you ever gone to the Red Wing Diner in Walpole Ma on rt1, I haven't been there in a while, great fried clams and good Pizza.:)

Ah, finally something for NJ to be proud of on a gun forum. We have a fine selection of greasy spoon diners.

The diner capital of the world.

A local favorite.

There is a LOT to be proud of in New Jersey! Not a gun friendly state but Jersey is a great place.

Wish I could visit that diner and order up a nice pork roll , egg and cheese on a hardroll, with a side of gravy fries!

Regarding truck stops...Several years back both my Wife and I had simply crazy work issues the few weeks before Christmas. The first year since we were married that we never even decorated for the Holidays.

We hadn't shopped for each other and she came up with the idea to just limit ourselves to fifty each...but it had to be from the local Conoco Truck stop.

Hate to say it but the gifts ended up making our Christmas for us. We both had so much fun it brought us out of our work related funk.

As a long time Highway Dick I spent a lot of time with the Troop car parked at some truck stop on the Interstate. Nothing wrong with a truck stop.

Funny story for me. Had a driver to threaten to take a deuce in our driveway of our receiving lane, if we didn't let him use our facilities. I said we didn't have any public restrooms (it's noted on their incoming BOL's)
Well let's just say he made good on his promise. I ended up calling 911, showed the deputy our video surveillance.
So... It was even funnier to watch him get arrested, taken to jail, and his truck towed off our site.

As a trucker for many years I don't find that funny at all. It's nice when you go to a customer and are treated like a human being. That being said, it is also right to behave like one while you're there.

So if I go to a bank, grocery store, or other establishment that doesn't have a public restroom for me to use. I should just do what I want anyway?

Btw - to be a decent person I had 2 porta potties installed outside for OTR drivers. We still get piss bottles and plastic bag surprises left on our property.
So much for being nice huh.

It is closed now but years ago on highway 5 north of Sacramento Ca., about an hour north there was a stop named...

Bill & Kathy's

that did one heck of a business and the food was GOOD and it had a very large parking lot.

Nevada has a few "Full" truck stops, also..............:D

I'm sorry you have had contact with the lower end of the truck driver pool. I assure you that they are a distinct minority. I think you will find that there is a very small percentage that are lacking in manners. Of course if three thousand truckers pass your way and only one does something bad. He is the only one that has made his presence known.
So, now since I own a truck and make my living with it, I am a scumbag and a bad guy, Thanks.

I would bet you were never in the Army! There was a more colloquial name for that dish. Lessee if I can do this without incurring the wrath of the moderators: we called it SOS.

If you hadn't said it, I would have!

I was a carny for a year when I was 18, and we ate at a lot of truck stop diners. I've been a fan since, but don't get to eat at them that much anymore, since my wife is not a big fan of them.

And I like any restaurant that serves breakfast all day!
