Default New truck

I'm looking at buying a truck. My heart tells me I want a 4x4 crew cab F150, but Lordy, Lordy the prices Ford wants for one. I want to be able to pull a light travel trailer or horse trailer if need be. Don't need a 3/4 ton truck.

I'm considering a Nissan Titan as well, maybe even a Dodge Ram. Don't care much for Chevys or GMCs.

Thoughts folks?

Been looking around myself recently. My 2006 GMC, although it runs well, is starting to rust away underneath. Was looking at Fords. One thing I did notice is the prices on the F-150's is as high, or higher than most of the F-250's, not counting the diesel models.

So, have been considering a F-250 with the V-10 engine. Bit of a gas hog compared to the new Eco-Boost 150's, but a lot heavier duty - Long term durability? I question how long lived the new turbo motors will be, and know the V-10 has a good record of durability.

Gas F-250's, 4 WD, XLT package and extended cab run around $45,000.00, before discounts / rebates. Seems I can get into one for about 37K. Trucks aint cheap anymore...

I really like Fords. I have heard the Titans are gas guzzlers.
I'd take a hard look at a Tundra too.

The ford v10 has been replaced with a Ford 6.2 liter v8. That engine and tranny combo is REAL stout.

I bought a 2015 F150 Crew cab with the 5.0 V8, love it, but look at the dash boards by the defroster vents to make sure it isn't warped like most are. Mine stickered at $50,000.00 and I got it for 39,300.00 out the door last august, I average 19 mpg . I would never buy a GM after that 80 cent ignition BS. that killed innocent people.

Not going to do it, but my dream rig would be a fully restored 1960-66 Chevy or GMC 4WD suburban with a strong engine, positraction, and 4 speed.

I'd get myself restored at the same time if I could.

I'd recommend buying used. You can save a lot doing that & if you're selective you can get one barely used.

I like the Silverados.

The all new aluminum F series would be tricky to work on.

You are leaning towards a Ram but on a quite night you can hear Chrysler products rust.

For the record, I'm a Ford man, so I'm prejudiced. However, I've had opportunity to drive and use them all pretty extensively over the years. I found nothing along the way to change my prejudice. All of 'em cost a ton of money these days. Oughta be against the law! But for my money, for comfort, quality, reliability, and hard working, the Fords get it done for me! There is a reason Ford's have been the #1 selling truck as well as the #1 selling vehicle of any kind for the past several years. And they are worth more when you get ready to trade or sell too! My 2010 F-150 Super Crew with a 6.5' bed and an 11,000 pound towing capacity has been the hands down best vehicle I've ever owned, among many. It is quieter, more comfortable, smoother, and betting riding than any vehicle I've ever owned or ridden in. And with the mid sized V-8, it does what I need it to do. What you need done will decide what size motor and suspension you need to buy. Starting in 2010, the frame that Ford started putting underneath their truck bodies is considerably better than anything they built previously, and in my view better than any of the other brands. Yes, I'm prejudiced, but my opinion is based on my experience. You will have to decide what that might be worth. I got more than my money's worth with mine!

I knew a guy that bought a Titan with the v-8 and it couldn't pass a gas station. He called Nissan about the gas guzzler and they told him he had to expect that with the V-8. He sold it real quick and he usually runs a truck till the wheels fall off.
None of the diesels will be up to the Cummins that Dodge uses. Any new truck you will need a lot of CHA CHING $$ to buy one. I firmly believe in finding a good used truck over a new one. You can save a lot off depreciation cost buying used.

Honestly, I was getting tired of all the recall notices we kept getting on our 2008 Toyota Tacoma 4wd access cab.
Rear leaf springs, seat belts, frame rust, spiral cable, etc.
When it got totaled by a young idiot speeding through a stop sign on a blind left turn, I decided to get something different.
My wife and I came across a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 4wd. It was the right price, had under 63,000 miles and was in great shape.

It rides great and it's a joy on road trips. We don't use it for towing but it's set up for it. I'm sure it'll haul anything we want or need it to and we'll probably be driving it all over the mountains starting next spring.
Of course four wheel boonie bouncing in the snow could be a lot of fun too.

Just did this. You never really know when them lil' wimmin will snap. Evidently, a $3,000.00 steering box and 3 $300.00 EGR valves will do it.

So..... I tow an 11,000 pound travel trailer, an after 17 years of F250 and F350 (Dually diesel) rough riding, gut busting, drink spillin', eye crossin truck driving, I wanted something a little nicer (and smoother). I got with my local Ford guy, (Doug Reuther, Jr.) and started building an F150. It was crew cabbed, 4x4, short bed, heavy framed, tow package, tow mirrors (not included in the tow package anymore) EcoBoost V8 and with all these add-ons barely met the 11,000lb tow needs. $52,995.00

So Doug trots out an F350 XLT, 6.2L gas engine, heavy duty tow package (>20,000 lbs), crew cab, short bed 4x4 in blue metal flake, starting price $51,000. I whined and bawled that I didn't want another rough riding, well, you get the idea. The wife finally says fine, you can order the F150, but not until you test drive the F350. They wanted me to take it for the afternoon, but I didn't even clear the lot before I already knew it rode better than the 2006 F350. Honestly, it rides better than the 06 did with 500 lbs of sand in the back of it.

They had a promotion going on at the time that gave a "Friends and Family" discount of an additional $10,000.00 off, and then the trade in. I never took it back.

Oh, and I routinely get 14.9 mpg with it. (We're right at 4000 miles)

I am a Ford man I bought a 2015 Ford F150 Lariat with the V6 Turbo boost. I get about 19.5 miles per gallon. I have owned a half dozen Fords. I like the ride, and handling. I would compare the ride of my Ford to any luxury cars. I traded in a 2013 F150 lariat with 35,000 miles, I got $31,000 trade and I owed $19,000 with program dollars I financed $29,500 for 60 months at 0% interest just like the last one. Ford hold there value. Look around there may be a truck a couple years old at a reasonable price.

I like Chevy cars, but when it comes to pick up trucks I will take a Ford every time. Love the F-150 that I have. Mine is 18 years old and still runs like it did the day I bought it. Best money I ever spent.

I think all new truck prices now days are crazy. Honestly I'd have to say look at something with low miles, and let the first owner / lessee pay the price down some. If you find it at a dealer, they will usually have some type of warranty plan to help ease any concerns you might have.

I was just looking at building a nicely optioned truck, regular cab, v8 Silverado and it totaled out at over $30k.. For ~$28k, I can find a crew cab, with leather (not an option on regular cabs..no idea why not??) and every option known to man, and only about 20k miles..

I've been told the high truck prices and lousy mileage are the result of Federal Safety Regulations for trucks.
If so somebody has a problem with sanity checks.

Aloha,

We have a 2010 Toyota Tundra with tow package.

It has had several brake recalls, all I'll say is that it's quirky when you slowly step on the gas.

Also, most of the bolts are Not galvanized and are rusting.

Metal in the rubber strips on the roof edge rusted within warranty period.

We have been notified twice of fire danger in power equipment in doors, but there has not been a cure for it yet.

If you get a used truck, make sure you get the Extended Warranty and make sure it covers the electricals and computers.

I notice that new vehicles use wires that are much thinner and more prone to corrosion, at least here in a salt air environment.

I think you can get any of the big 3 loaded cheaper than you can a similar Toyota.

I think our next truck or suburban will be Certified Pre Owned mainly because of the extended warranty.

Looks like several of us have the same ideas and plans for buying trucks. My '01 F350 diesel ran beautifully but the familiar list of dollar draining items, like rust (including the oil pan), brakes (ongoing problems), transmission (replaced at 110K) inspired me to look at the F150's.
Honestly, and I hate to admit it, since I really loved that F350, I was too old to crawl under to change oil and lube. Plus my dream of exploring the remote Northwest Territory roads is probably not going to happen in this lifetime.

I found a used 2014 F150 XLT 4x4 crew, 17K miles at a local dealer. So far I love the ride and conveniences that were absent on the F350. I sort of regret not looking more carefully for a newer aluminium body F150 but the die is cast.

Bottom line........... look and drive several until you find the right combination.

If you are looking for a used truck, here is one you can buy cheap, needs a little work but it hasn't been driven in 15 years.

Interesting. How'd you come up with a 2015 F-150 in August?
I got one too but the truck I ordered in December was delivered in March,2015.

I own a 2004 (first year of production) Nissan Titan 4x4, it has served me well pulling boats and trailer loads of firewood over the years.

Only two minor problems since I bought it, I run Mobil 1 synthetic oil in it and have it changed every 7,500 miles.

Muley-Gil and others, here's a little site that might help you decide on which vehicle you think you want.

Keeping You Safe | Safercar | National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)

You can search for recalls, or customer problems. Pick a year, pick a vehicle.

Me.....I think I'm going to look for a 1927 Model T truck...Most of the problems should have been fixed by now!!!!!

I've been a Tundra fan for over ten years. This one was a left over 2011 Limited DC 4wd, but its a stripped down Limited. I was also able to negotiate down the extended warranty because of few electronic features, no sun roof etc. It's more of a rough and ready truck, not as refined as say the Ram 1500 or a few others. I've never really been a Dodge fan but a friend has the high end Ram 1500 and its a sweet ride but I know it had to be expensive.

Whatever you decide to buy be on the look out for a demo truck, a sales person will be happy to call you when one comes in , might save you a few bucks. Happy hunting.

Assembled in Tx of US and Japanese parts:

I took a hard look at the Fords in late June. My '07 Chevy daily driver Silverado was getting close to 200K miles and we had a new higher sales tax kicking in July 1st so I did some serious shopping. I ended up buying a new Ram Ecodiesel. I do a lot of driving to various courthouses around the State and the mileage has been fantastic. One memorable trip I got 33 mpg. My average is around 25 mpg. Take a look at them.

Probably not your cup of tea, but I love my 03 Ram, no issues at all so far. I've done a lot of customizing to it and usually only drive it on pretty days now.

I have bought houses for less than what new trucks cost. I don't understand when I see ordinary working stiffs driving around in new diesel rigs. Hourly pay around here is low, there's no way they're handing over cash for these trucks. Must be 7 year financing, or maybe longer. Good lord what a trap.

I pull a hay trailer and two horse trailer but only maybe once or twice a month. I gave my 93 Toyota 4x4 to my son. It has 260K miles on it and refuses to die. He beats it up in the back country and loves it. I'm currently looking to trade my Honda Element for an 06 or earlier Tundra. The V8 in those smaller Tundras is the same one used in the Lexus LS series luxury cars. Dead quiet, economical, powerful and very long lasting. I won't pay more than 10K cash or trade so it's going to take a while.
Vehicle payments are for suckers.

Bought a Ram Laramie a couple years ago.
Loaded out 4x4. Don't pull anything but a small
21 travel trailer.

Morning Gil.

I traded in my Ford F-250 with the 7.3 Diesel for a new 2015 Ford. Just so you know I had over 200 K on the old "Queen Mothership". I loved it.

Did my home work. I got an XL but one that has the XL package without the XLT name, extra electronics and goodies etc.

That made it much cheaper. I picked the Supercab which has a 6.5' Bed. The 4 door has a ?5.5 or 5' bed.

I drove the 2.7 V6 with dual turbos. Lordy it can be the hot rod.

I pull a larger RV and have a stock trailer, both are handled well. I did add overload springs to the rear.

Good Gas mileage and tough. I'm happy.

I grew up on Chevys. Somewhere around the time frame that I got a "real job" I switched over to Dodge. No clue why, just did. My 02 3/4ton diesel was fantastic! It'd pull more than its share and took me all over North America. It had everything - off road lights, camper area with tons of storage in the bed, etc.

Around 2010, I finally got tired of getting airborne going over speed bumps and having to turn it off when ordering in the drive through. Also, the family was getting bigger and I just really needed a bigger rear seat as well. I do regret selling it off. Should've just kept it, but wasn't wise enough at the time to realize I could have my own vehicle too. We picked up this 1/2 ton Ram with the gas guzzling Hemi and love it! It drives like a sports car, hauls like a heavy duty truck and overall we've really enjoyed it. It quickly became the family vehicle though.

I'm starting the search again my "my truck".

Yep,because Chevrolet trucks and GMC trucks are counted separately, when in actuality, they are the same truck.

Then G.M. needs to call them by the same name if they want the number one spot! I will agree, though I mean no disrespect to those who like the G.M. products, that the folks who buy the GMC's are getting a Chevrolet truck that has some different farkles and cost more than the Chevy's cost! What ever floats your boat, I say ... I buy the ones that have worked best for me, and will till I have reason to change my mind. They are all pretty good trucks, depending on how you use them and take care of them.

Wow. I like that old truck! 'Cept for the moose antlers, no offense. Love to have one like that for sure. Was it automatic or manual? Just curious.

Agreed. I've been a devoted new vehicle buyer for the last 30 years. ( Every 6-7 years in fact) Last time out though I poked around a bit at lightly used trucks while I tried to justify $40K+ on something I actually wanted to drive (but would likely beat up in short order.) Within a week I was able to find a loaded and like new 4 yr old vehicle with only 21K miles on it. CARFAX showed It was just coming off lease from an elderly woman. Deciding factor was that I got it for 55 % off the original sticker (which was still neatly folded in the glove box). Not saying it's the only way I will go in the future but I now consider buying off lease as an option to get allot of truck for 1/2 the money.

p.s. FWIW, Toyota CS treated me so badly on my lemon of a Tacoma that I would never do business with them again. My current Nissan Frontier has been a 100% better experience for me in so many ways.

Purely a matter of prejudice, I admit--I had a bunch of retirement money in GM stock which was made worthless in the "re-organization" some years back. I do not expect to ever again be in the market for a Chevy truck.

I had a 2004 Nissan Titan for 10 years and 260K miles and it was a great truck. When I sold it the truck still had the original starter, alternator, fuel pump, transmission, muffler, tail pipe, rear shocks, and ball joints. I had no repairs at all until about 170k miles and after that they were minor ones and I averaged 17 mpg highway and city driving. They get a bad rap for gas mileage but its not THAT bad and they are really heavy duty. My 99 F-150 was a good truck also but not as good and I would definitely look for a used Titan instead of 40 or 50 grand for a new Ford.

Drive behind any Toyota dealership and look at the piles of rusty frames they have been replacing. Saw over 20 of them at one dealership. Too bad scrap prices are down or you wouldn't be able to see them. Good advertising for the durability of their vehicles.

Talking Each to their own,

And I know GM doesn't get much love on the internets. But I've been in a Chev or GMC truck for the last 25 years or so, and they've done ok for me. I've seen ample evidence that they all can make a lemon, as well as a standout performer, so brand loyalty has never really impressed me as anything but comfort with the familiar- and before you get your hackles up, I am as guilty as anyone on that score... but I digress.

Test drove this last April, and the hook set deep. 6.2L 8-speed, 450 lb-ft torque, 420 HP, and I have gotten up to 24 mpg on long trips. And it is the nicest vehicle I have ever had in terms of creature comforts, and for sure the safest as well.

What can I say, I'm a sucker for farkles.....

I think the 5 major players have all stepped up their game and they are all putting out some really nice stuff. I could easily personally defend the purchase of any of them. What I can't justify is the price!

My buddy sells Fords. He stopped by last week with a all-out-loaded F150 Platinum crew cab (3.5 eco boost) Very nice truck. It's bells and whistles had bells and whistles! It had a mind blowing delivered list price north of 66,000 bucks. He said they have 2 others on the lot and always have a couple on order.

He also thought that Lincoln was going to bring back their pick-up (the old MK 10). What's that thing going to cost??? What else can they do to a pick-up???

I don't think you can go wrong with any of them, just bring a pick-up bed full of folding money!

A few years ago a study was made comparing the costs to manufacture a Ford F150 and a Ford Taurus. They were within $60.00 of each other to manufacture. The selling price of the F150 was $5000.00 more than the Taurus. Someone is willing to pay the difference. Who is it?

I agree with Tyree.

I almost always buy lightly used certified vehicles. Most have from 6-15 thousand miles and near 1/2 sticker price. They also come with factory extended warranty.

I have a Buick Enclave AWD, the one's I was deciding between were used to shuttle around the US Olympic ski team with about 4,000 miles on them. There are some good buys out there. More money for guns .

PS: We have the John Deere Golf Classic here every year and the local car dealers supply the new vehicle's for all the golfer's and official's, etc.
They always give them the fully optioned vehicle's. Deep discounts after they leave and usually only a few hundred miles on them.
I'm sure they do this all over the country for big events like this.

I try to like Fords, I really do but something about their seats just makes my back hurt after a long trip. Never had the problem with GM. products. Bought old blue in 1999 as a demo with 7,000 miles on her. She'll turn "legal" (read 17 years ) in June of this year. Try as I might, I don't think I'll get to 400,000 miles on her by then (original engine and tranny) but I'll be close as I'm at 383,000 now. Can't afford a new suburban but that is what I really want over a pickup as I usually carry around a lot of %&*^ in the back. (waders, shell bag and a couple of cases of shells live in the back during duck season which gets changed out to fishing tackle and ice chests during the rest of the year). Can't carry that stuff all the time in the bed of a truck.
I loves old blue

How did I get a 2015 in August of 2015 ? I went to the dealer and had my choice of around 50 or so on his lot, I got it cheap because they were late coming out and by the time they caught up people decided to wait for the 2016's to come out.
