Wiping a Hard Drive
There's writing over a hard disk and then there's WRITING OVER a hard disk.
This was a failed drive from a customer's business server that stored a few million dollars in patent information. The guy said he wanted his data to be destroyed. I happily obliged.
Oh... and my data-wiping tool is a 2013 Colt LE6920 w/Trijicon TA31-F and a Troy rear fold-down.

That's great....
That's great but with disk recovery technology that they have now I'd chew it up good. Besides, it's more fun.

If the drive belonged to Ayman al-Zawahiri you can bet that a 3-letter agency could still get bits and pieces of data off that ... but not your town's 19 year-old hacker dude using free forensics software. But most important, it must have been fun wiping it!

A demagnetizer first for some time, then 10 rounds of 45-70 560 gr hard lead bullets would do even better I think!

Then sink it in very deep water, well away from where the members here lost all their guns in those tragic boating accidents.
Very deep salt water, for choice.
Or some of my sister's homemade habanero-and-green-cayenne hot sauce, if you want it to dissolve completely.

I got to use a half dozen thermite grenades on some hard drives...then to make sure I used a couple of platter charges made of 50 grain det-cord. Being a bomb tech sure can be fun sometimes!

When I was overseas, we used thermite to destroy our classified disk packs...

Actually, yes... emailed the front and back in a pdf showing the serial number. His request was drilling a couple of holes through the platters.

Is there a ricochet danger from bullets hitting the disk? Is that caliber dependent? Seems like a .357 might punch through okay; a .22 or .25 not.

Reducing a disk to a blob of molten metal would indeed do the job.

Looks like you got a good start on it.
Now get out the double 12 and finish it.
