New movie ( to me) and favorite: My Cousin Vinny.
Though I know this has been out since 1991, I had never seen it till a couple days ago. This had Joe Pesci, Fred ( Hermann Munster) Gwynne, Lane Smith, Ralph Maccio and the guy who was D-Day in: Animal House--as the sheriff of a hick town in Alabammy.
I'd known of the movie but had never seen it till TV land played it Friday. I thought it was pretty good and Pesci and Gwynne both--stole the show. Vinny kept being tossed into jail because he kept being in Contempt of court.
Anyway, its nice to experience a ''new'' good older movie for a change. Now that l got my comedy viewing out of the way, back to my regular scheduled programming---Westerns.

I'm astounded that you never saw this movie. It's one of the funniest movies ever.
It was Fred Gwynn's last movie, he died of cancer shortly thereafter.
Marisa Tormei won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Monalisa Vito.
The case has been cited by real judges and lawyers as accurately portraying court room procedure. No less than Justice Scalia mentioned it in one decision.
Then there was Bill Belichick proclaiming that he was not the Monalisa Vito of football inflation pressures.
When I'm down south, I always make it a point to ask if they use real grits, because no self respecting southerner would use instant grits.
It's even funnier to me now, because my son and his family live in Alabama and my daughter in law is from New Jersey.
A few years ago, my wife and I stopped at place that could be the "Sack of Suds" on a road trip down there.
"Your honor, the two youts-"
"The two what?"

Great movie. I was surprised that Joe Pesci is as good in comedy as he is as a psychopathic gangster. But I agree with the above that Ms Tomei stole the show. It was also (as always good to see Fred Gwynn (sp). Enjoyed him in the old Munsters and before that Car 54 Where Are You. He was about the only good thing about the movie Pet Cemetery from the Stephen King book.

It was a pretty good B movie, but should have been named Vinny's cute cousin.

"Do your grits cook faster than anywhere else in the grit cooking world?"
"Are they magical grits? Did you get them from the same guy Jack got the beans from?"
"Are you sure about the five minutes? Are you sure about that five minutes?"
There are so many great lines that can be applied to so many situations.

One those movies which was great the first time you saw it, but not so good in subsequent viewings because you knew the plot.

One of my wife's favorites. It would be with her being a lawyer.
I have had a "thing" for Marisa Tomei since seeing it but of course she's not interested in "things."
Recognize the witness who cooked grits as Bobby on Sons of Anarchy?
Bruce McGill played the sheriff. Yes, he was "D-Day" in Animal House and has appeared in numerous films and TV shows including his current gig as a detective on Rizzoli & Isles.
I think my wife bears a resemblance to Tomei but she says she doesn't see it. What do you all think? Slightly "Marisa like" or no?

I disagree, it gets better because you know the plot, and the funny lines.
I think that I've watched it a dozen times. I'm surprised that I don't own it. It's one of my favorite comedies.

My son had never seen it, although my daughter in law had. I somehow ended up with two copies of the DVD, so gave them one. He's seen it now, and living in Alabama, gets the jokes.
And yes, the red clay down there is just as described in the movie.

I think you might be mistaken here. SOA's Bobby was Mark Boone Junior. The witness does not look like him to me.

Great movie. Can watch it over and over.
Where would we be without movies? We can get lost in a movie for a few hours. We can forget about our own lives. It's freedom from ur problems.
Listening to music can ease our stress too. Music from when we grew up.

I was wrong. Sure looked like the same actor to me. I realize now the Vinny actor was too old to be Bobby.

I teach criminal justice classes... I have actually used this movie to illustrate the CJ system. It has just about everything: the crime, the investigation, including the questioning of suspects and witnesses, gathering of evidence, the trail, presentation of evidence, well, you see where I'm going with this, I have seen it literally dozens of times. To me it never gets old, anticipation of each line adds to the hilarious factor.
Ringo, you have to invest in the DVD or bluray. I'm sure that TVLand would have cut out the profanity, and that means about half of Vinny's and Monalisa's dialogue, and that would ruin the movie. There is a YouTube video I think where someone has cut together all of the cuss words used by Vinny's into one long clip. It is hilarious in itself. It never fails to amuse. The more times you watch it, the funnier it gets.
One of my favorite scenes is where Vinny shoots at the owl with what looks like a 44 magnum Smith. Missing it of course. It reminds me of one of my colleagues.
Best, Les

Things in general;
Ringo lives by the code of the west, at the end of the movie he leaves the girl, hugs the horse and rides off. So it is possible he did not notice the girl or was looking for a way to ride into the sunset leaving her behind.
To the fiancee Gary, if this is true, better get used to folks staring. It comes with hot. Be man enough to ignore it.
Pig, yes she does look a little like the girl, so why in the blazes are you here talking to us? Waiting for the end of the movie to ride off in the sunset?

I've never seen it explained better than this!
I have movies and TV episodes that I never get tired of watching. Anticipation of certain scenes add to my enjoyment of it.
And Joe Pesci's role in this movie is my second favorite of his, right after Tommy in "Goodfellas".

My wife and I continue to use the lines from this movie.
"Are you sure? How can you be so sure?"
On being asked if a tool was calibrated and the not safe for the forum response followed by "It's an industry term" with term pronounced toime.

Forensics
I really enjoyed the forensic detail of the identical looking GM cars having different mechanicals that caused a different rubber pattern on the road. Solid rear axle (Buick I think) VS Pontiac with the independent rear suspension transaxle.

I think that I've watched it a dozen times. I'm surprised that I don't own it. It's one of my favorite comedies.

Best, Les

To the fiancee Gary, if this is true, better get used to folks staring. It comes with hot. Be man enough to ignore it.
Pig, yes she does look a little like the girl, so why in the blazes are you here talking to us? Waiting for the end of the movie to ride off in the sunset?

I get that all the time when out with Sabrina. She wears black spandex all the time. Right now, shes in Houston with her father, so I havent seen her for almost two months again already. Anyway, if she would allow me to show a pic of her? you'd know what I mean?

And Joe Pesci's role in this movie is my second favorite of his, right after Tommy in "Goodfellas".

Ringo, when my last DVD player went south, I went to Walmart and got a bluray player. It will play both bluray and DVDs. I mostly have DVDs, but have started buying bluray said when the price is right. They are becoming more inexpensive, and the resolution is far sharper. And you can still play the older DVDs as well. I have a VHS player at work that will convert to DVDs. I used it to convert a lot of training tapes for school, but have also converted all those VHSs that I took of the boys when they were kids. I still have a lot of movies on VHS as well, eventually I'll get around to converting them as well. Streaming video is the new thing, and I have been watching some old movies at the suggestion of Texas Star over on a couple of his threads.
You gotta see goodfellas also. It's another classic, but not so much a comedy.

Oh, yeah...you blend.."
Funny funny movie. I'm in love with Tomei, she was and IS STILL hot hot hot.
AS a hot rodder and fan of PosiTrac* I was delighted to have limited-slip differentials become a centerpiece of a forensic crime investigation AND a movie!
