As a long time coin collector, the early 19th century coins were beautiful. Then came along the Barber series, nickels, dimes, half dollars...only the Morgan Dollar shone through during those dark times. In 1916, the Mercury dime gave me hope, as well as the Standing Liberty Quarter, both of which shone through, and in 1921 the Peace Dollar replace the Morgan, and it wasn't half bad. Alas, the quarter gave way to the Washington example in 1932, the dime to Roosevelt in 1946, and the Peace Dollar went the way of the dodo. The last attractive coin minted was the Walking Liberty Half dollar, in my opinion. Everything else became generic...Franklin Half, not exactly something you would see in the Louvre...Kennedy, sort of okay, no problem with it...Ike Dollars, Susan B. Anthony, Sacagawea dollar...are you kidding me? Even the post office can't give them away in change. Same with paper currency these days...the older bills had character.

Walkers are my favorites...eagle was so well detailed. Classics never go out of style. Maybe that's why the U.S. one ounce silver bullion coins are modeled after the St. Gaudens $20 gold piece...another classic design.

Oh, you're going to just love the new $20 bill!

I volunteer to take any of them off people's hands for $10 each, a real Hamilton...I hope the new bills are designed to be used as is at slot machines...otherwise, it's gonna cost to reprogram them to accept the new design...the ones where I live don't accept $2 bills, wasn't worth the cost to program the machine sensors...

I like the Sacajawea Dollar.
When I get some, I keep them.
Probably have 20-30.
I also really like the State Quarters.

I just wish they would have put something in the mix so they wouldn't tarnish so easily, and made them bigger than a quarter. It's not unattractive, it's just that once in circulation they turn dark quickly...I have a few in flips, but I don't know how long the finish will hold out. I buy Canadian silver bullion coins, and they are prone to milk spotting, whereas the 2 pound Britannia coins from Britain maintain their luster. Silver is silver, but buyers like their coins pretty.

One of my favorite--actually my favorite, is the quarter that came out in 1976 commemorating out bicentennial. I love the backs design and collect these. I'm now lucky to find one in every 100 quarters or so. Used to, I'd find 2-3 in a roll of quarters.

I posted back in post#2. Back in the 60s/70s I collected coins. After I got out of collecting I began 'investing' in coins in the 70s/80s/90s/,31S cents and 12S nickels were valued low for the mintage. When the coin market deflated(90s & later) I began investing in silver bullion and still do. Still collect, only World Silver Crowns because of the variety in designs.

I agree with the OP, modern coinage is a disgrace. Some of those presidential dollars are like arcade tokens. The Sacagawea is ok and some of the new nickel variations acceptable but the rest, junk.
And now the future of American currency will be forever for sale to the cause du jour. Look for Corporate logos to start appearing next.

I agree......

Coins were works of art until they started using plain profile portraits for nearly everything. My wife inherited a box of old coins from her Dad. The details were great. The old Buffalo nickel wasn't one of the most elaborate, but it had tons of character.

1916/7 SL Quarter, Type 1. It doesn't get any better.
Honorable mention - Buffalo nickel, Peace dollar, Walking Liberty half dollar and St. Gaudens $20 gold piece.

I've been collecting United States silver coins for about 25 years and think that the Walking Liberty half is the best looking coin on both sides.

Absolutely...the most gorgeous half dollar ever! I have one un-circulated one in my collection.
