I am always up for a good Western motion picture and, if things are particularly desperate, up for even a crummy Western. Too early for me to determine into which category this new film will fit, but having low expectations on new Westerns has usually worked out for me.

The one is entitled "In A Valley of Violence". It stars John Travolta, Ethan Hawke and some others I have never heard of. The plot was pithily described as "A mysterious stranger and a random act of violence drag a town of misfits and nitwits into the bloody crosshairs of revenge."

I couldn't find a trailer for it yet but understand it is set for a September, 2016 premiere. It was screened at the recent South by Southwest Festival in Austin.

Ethan Hawke apparently has a dog in the film. That's a good start. Woof!

One reviewer who has seen it said this about it. (See how many adjectives this guy can cram into one sentence.) "Laced with nigh-surreal touches, a splashy Leone-esque opening credits sequence, and an Ennio Morricone-inflected score, this offbeat, grandly entertaining neo-Spaghetti Western is supremely stylish pulp with a black comic heart."

We'll see. I always like it when there are new Westerns to look forward to.

Schofields sure are popular in westerns now. Like Travolta has there. Ethan Hawke was great in The Newton Boys, which was basically a western about the 20s bank robber brothers.

Two of the supporting cast are Taissa Farmiga, the beautiful younger sister of Vera Farmiga (The Departed, Up in the Air with Clooney and the TV series on the Psycho Bates Motel---she's the mother) and Burn Gorman, U.S. born but best known in British TV and very much a scene stealer.

Travolta has made a good number of shoot 'em ups so I think he knows his way around firearms.

And Hawke's role in Training Day was superb though I liked him
in the fairly recent Good Kill as a pilot of an U.S. Air Force drone.

Let's give it a chance.

Somehow I cant see Travolta as a convincing Cowboy.

That may be the worst, most hopelessly overwrought piece of movie criticism I have ever read.:D

Shoulda may be on the trail of something. When critics use a string of big words or reflect back on older movies they are not talking in english about this one.

I do hope it's good. John as a cowboy?

The dog with a bandana sort of looks brokeback.
Only dog washing business' or wimmin put a bandana on a dog.

I see John has slid to 2nd billing. He now is in the Frog, Chill Wills or Gabby Hayes billing spot.
