Default Poorly Designed Truck Cap?

I bought a top of the line Leer 100XQ top for my 2014 Ford F-150 Short Bed. The thing leaks all over the place. Anyone else have this issue with this cover/truck combination?

I had a Leer cap many years ago, it was great, no problems at all, I would go back to the dealer you bought it from.

Take it back. I used to work for a company (not Leer) who made and sold truck caps (or toppers as some call them.) If those side windows are the kind that are frameless and open up the smallest issue with the seal placement will make them leak like a son of a gun.

I have. Three times. My suspicious mind wonders if the dealer gets reimbursed by the company every time he does any kind of warranty work on a cap.

Nah, I don't think so. My neighbor is a test driver for GM. They were bench marking their trucks against, I think it was Toyota or Nissan who are running a Cummins diesel in a new model. They also bench marked against Ford.

He said Ford was the better truck by far. And he works for GM. I don't think I'd be thrilled with the aluminum body, but my truck is steel. Such that steel is these days.

I think that's the issue I'm having. the side and back windows are all frameless. And the front removable sliding window is also leaking bad.

Do you know if the local dealer gets paid by the company for warranty work? Just wonder if I'm getting hustled a little. Seems like he does a little work here a little there....Next step is to remove and replace all of the window seals.

take it back and tell them you want one that does leak. Or get your money back and go someplace else. { three times}

I have had Leer toppers on 3 pick ups since 1981. Had each one for over 10 years and never any problems. Every product manufacturer will make a lemon now and then but as far as Leer topper my experience had been a good one.

Exclamation

Haven't had any issues with the ARE top I got 8 years ago- BUT the new one I am considering for my new truck is frameless?? May have to rethink this. Beyond that, I am guessing the installer is at fault. My current one has seen a bunch of miles, in ALL kinds of extreme weather with no problems. Hmmmm???

I would not wait for rain to test it out. After the dealer has fixed it use your garden hose and test for leaks. After several attempts to fix the problem a call to the manufacture would be in order. Good luck

The installer just bolts it to the bed. Not leaking at all from that seal. I think it's an issue of the factory guy not putting the seals in right. But all of them? I'm still in the "give them a chance to make it right" phase but after the next try, I'll be in "unhappy consumer" mode.

I considered a Toyota Tundra but wanted something with better mileage. Plus I like the Ford interior a lot more.

Do to retired and not needing a large covered storage area, my last few 4x4 trucks have been good quality role ups that cover to the tailgate.

When working and camping a lot I have owned 6 Leer caps.( this covers more than 35 years and a lot of miles driven) A couple I had the dealer transfer to my new truck.(one cap went on 3 trucks) and a few I just left on as I sold the truck off my lawn.. Never had any kind of trouble with any of the Leer caps.

Most times you get what you pay for!

I will tell you an easy fix on this one, even though you like Fords .

Loosen up all the nuts and bolts that are holding the top to your bed, but don't take them all the way off, that means when it lifts it will lift up only so much, so no need to use force, just common sense. Get a floor jack and put it in your truck bed with a nice size piece of wood so you don't make a big hole on the roof of your new Leer shell, remember the bolts are just loose, but still there. You might need to use spacers of some sort for your jack to reach the inside of your roof, 2x4s 4x4s, whatever needed that is safe and sturdy. Get some 3M black weather-strip adhesive that comes in tubes, you might need a few tubes to get this done, and some 3M masking tape to keep the adhesive from going all over the side of your bed, use rubber gloves, this stuff is nasty, and get a pint of paint thinner to wipe clean if needed. Put your tape on, apply your adhesive, and then easily lower your jack in place, and tighten your nuts and bolts, and pray to God that it works!!
