Default I’m ready for a short road trip.

I’ve never been to Cherokee, NC, I think it’s time to head that way for three or four days.

Thought I’d book a room at Harrah’s Casino. So, has anyone stayed there and what did you think of hotel and amenities? I’m not much of a gambler, but I do like the all-inclusive resort idea.
If you’ve stayed there let me know what you think, the good or the bad.

Thanks all..

We did not get a room, ate lunch at the buffet(very nice) and not pricey.
The casino is huge! Gambled a little.Mostly watched the people spend their money!
I understand you can take a shuttle downtown also.
I recommend this. A beautiful part of North Carolina.

Hope the wildfires don't mess you up. Enjoy!!

Never stayed in Cherokee, always Bryson City. Great little base camp for exploring the area. It was good enough for Horace Kephart, in fact he is still there.

Here is a web site about old Horace..............Horace Kephart: Revealing an Enigma

If you like trains, Great Smokey Mountain Railway is a great trip.

There's a lot to do in the area.

We go to Harrah's Cherokee casino all the time. They comp us for the hotel, food, concerts, and golf so I'm unaware of the value of any all-inclusive packages.
There is also a very nice spa.
The golf at Harrah's Sequoia National is very challenging, and very vertical. Great fun.
There's a large selection of table games, and slots (tight). Several restaurants and a large and high quality buffet.
If you fish, Soco creek is between the Hotel and Casino, and often has fisherman in it.
If you approach through Maggie Valley on HWY 19, the Wheels through Time motorcycle museum is excellent. The Museum of the Cherokee Indian and Qualla Arts and Crafts in downtown Cherokee is also worth a visit.
The section of the Blue Ridge Parkway from Cherokee to I26 is the highest part and rises to over 6000 feet.

The coffee at the Dunkin Donuts in the casino food court is awful. Much better coffee from the servers on the casino floor.

The 2nd floor hallway of the hotel that faces the creek and casino has beautiful native art.

You are aware that the area is plagued by forest fires now and the entire region has an air quality alert, right?

Lots of serious forest fires in that general area as of today; I'd check with the hotel or visitors bureau on conditions before I started out. There might be roads closed, etc.

Thanks for the great advice all. I'd forgotten about the fires. I think I'll put this back a week or two.

Default There are some museums...

There are some cultural museums there and around that are good. If you ask me, there's more attraction in the surrounding areas than there is in Cherokee itself. It's changed a lot over the years. I'm sure there are plenty of signs advertising "Moccasins", "See the live bear!" and "Take your picture with the chief" I can't really say because it's been so long since I've been but I used to go up there religiously.

If you like somewhat overly dramatized (and with a loud organ) historical plays, "Unto These Hills" has been playing there FOREVER and is well and professionally done.

I found the Oconoluftee Indian village to be better than most tourist attractions as it is actually educational. So is Qualla arts.

Two museums of note is the Cherokee Indian museum. In the national park itself on the road that goes over the mountains(441) to Gatlinburg is a very nice museum. It is also well worth it just to drive on that road that takes you over the top of the mountains to Newfound Gap which has a developed visiting area that is rather exhilarating.

On the way to Newfound Gap there used to be an old grist mill with a flue turbine. I guess it's still there.

Clingman's Dome used to be a great attraction for the beautiful views, but since the bark borers killed all the trees........

Again, it's been a long time since I was up there so, things might be different now.

I have to admit that casinos don't attract me al all. In fact, I avoid them. I just hope that the income has helped people on the reservation because a lot of people really needed it.

I forgot about that, too. Probably be a good idea until they get them under control. A good rain would help some.

Might be longer. Your Governor was on TV yesterday, saying there is a good chance the fires could burn till March.

I have been in 19 foreign countries. Some of them extensively due to military travels and also a bunch of cruises over the last 23 years. To my shame there are many parts of THIS great nation that I have not visited.

I have some family in Davidson NC and every time I have been there I realize that I need to spend some time in that area. I don't really have a bucket list per se but that part of the country is always calling me. If I can still safely drive a car by the time I can get around to it I'll git-er-done.
