Arrow Onion Dip From Scratch

I'm a big fan of Lipton Onion Soup stirred into sour cream. If you're ever out of packets, please consider this alternative.

First, a tip to help keep the blood inside the body. Cutting boards tend to 'walk around' a bit sometimes, and that can lead to shorter fingers if one isn't careful. Please place a damp paper towel or dishrag under your cutting board, and it will help suction the board to the underlying surface. This will lead to fewer cuts in a busy kitchen.

Good recipes start with good ingredients, and what better ingredient than butter?

Chop up a few of these:

Add some of these:

Cook over low/medium heat, covered, until almost transparent.

Remove lid, turn heat up to medium, and caramelize the onions a bit.

Mix the oniony goodness in a big bowl with some softened cream cheese and a bunch of sour cream. Add a bit more cayenne, package up, and enjoy !!!

I like kettle-style chips, for practicality as much as taste/texture. This is a dip that tends toward the firm side, so plan your dipping accoutrements accordingly.

The local H-E-B often has the 16 ounce tub of "Dean's Onion Dip" on sale for $1.00. Pretty good and a lot easier than making your own, and probably cheaper. My wife can easily go through one tub in one sitting. But the home-made is probably tastier.

Interesting. I was told that after mixing onion soup mix into sour cram let it cure in the icebox for several hours, brings out the flavor.

PatriotX,

I cooked up a big bunch of onions using a similar method.
Instead of the butter; I used bacon.
Cut a bacon strip lengthwise into four strips - then cut into short (1/4 inch) pieces - then to the skillet.
Same method with onions
Ended with two pint jars in fridge.

They are scheduled to meet with green beans later this week.
NO Cream of Mushroom soup will be used.

May try some of mine with sour cream.

Several hours to overnight works well with the powdered mixes.

This recipe has great flavor immediately after mixing, but seems to actually get spicier overnight.

I've used home dried onions and beef broth (dried) and spices. However, we use onion soup enough, we buy it at Costco and always have 4-6 packet minimum around the house.

I really love green onion dip but can't find it any more. If you cut the root ends off of green onions and plant them, they will sprout in just a few days. They seem to over-winter well. After they sprout you can just harvest them and re-plant or just trim them with scissors while still in the ground. I dehydrate the tops and store them each fall. Mix them with sea salt and fresh black pepper, a little garlic powder and smoked paprika or cayenne. Mix with sour cream and let sit overnight.
