Visited the USS North Carolina yesterday, a storied battleship.
It was mostly used for shore bombardments but did sink one ship. And it participated in many Pacific Ocean engagements.

Those are really cool!
this is 1/12th.
A few more, just because it's fun to look at...
99% of the "scratch" stuff is made of found objects, for example; the needles in the gauges are tiny trimmed watch hands. the gauge housings are aluminum tube. brackets are various found objects repurposed.
the springs are hand wound wire.
The switches are made out of flattened aluminum wire.
all the colored wiring is various gauge found wire.
The A&N fittings come in bare aluminum I colored with a sharpie pen and the braided lines are ordered, but made to size.
The switches and buttons are hand made too, the red kill button is actually a piece of thin spaghetti painted red!

Beautiful work!

I've always enjoyed scale modeling, whether static or flying.

Here's a couple more from the Jet Ranger:

Way cool, but you're totally in a different league than me friend, RC's are like collecting guns in terms of money!
Love the fire extinguisher!

These things were everywhere when I was a kid.
The kitchen for cans in the house, the garage for oil cans.
Now they are hard to find and collectible

BTW how did all the things I like become "vintage"...

Possibly because many of US are "vintage" as well?

What really shocked me was looking for one of the wall mounted ones. I saw the odd pot metal modern one, but one store had a gen-u-wine Coca-Cola (?) one, and they wanted something like $50 for it

My wife and I were at the beach near dusk a few days ago, when we saw an eagle that looked like he had his talons caught on something. It turned out he was trying to get airborne with a raccoon carcass! He flew away without it, but circled around for another try. I hope he eventually went home with it.

Default Holocaust Remembrance Day

Today is the Holocaust Remembrance Day in the USA.

One of the places of Nazi horror I'll always remember visiting was Mauthausen. The staff at the camp had numerous ways to torture and kill inmates, including being worked to death in the granite quarry.

The rock quarry in Mauthausen concentration camp was at the base of the "Stairs of Death". Starving prisoners were forced to carry roughly-hewn blocks of stone – often weighing as much as 110 pounds up the 186 stairs.

Quite a few years ago, the Arizona Capitol museum in Phoenix had a display that commemorated the sinking of the battleship U.S.S. Arizona during the Japanese sneak attack on Dec. 7, 1941.

Among the items in the display was the complete silver service of the ship that was recovered from it. It was very ornate, and as I recall, it was purchased when the ship was launched by donations from Arizona citizens.

An interesting artifact from a pivotal time in our history.

John

Been enjoying Spring lately. That freeze we had in Texas really woke up some of the plants. One of Mom's roses and a flower from the lady next door's garden.

Random object today is picked because of the unrest present around the country in conjunction with the Floyd trial.

It's over an entrance to my high school, New Utrecht HS in Brooklyn NY. At one time, it's 11,000 pupil student body was thought to be the largest in the world, but probably better known as the home of the "Sweathogs" of TV's Welcome Back Kotter.

Photos from a long time ago and one fairly recent. The first photo is of me at Peace Park. It was a Saturday and I had a weekend pass. I went to Hiroshima to take pictures. A group of students saw me and rushed over. I didn't know what to expect. They wanted to practice their English circa 1967.

The next picture is a child taking a break. She has to be about 54 years old now.

The third picture is our latest little girl when she was about nine weeks old. You've got to smell the flowers along the way. Her name is Sugar Bear.

The rock quarry in Mauthausen concentration camp was at the base of the "Stairs of Death". Starving prisoners were forced to carry roughly-hewn blocks of stone – often weighing as much as 110 pounds up the 186 stairs.

1965 blackout. NYC Subway riders walking the underground rails.
Some looked cheerful being escorted out.

This guy came up, looking for a handout.

This old girl had 8 more teeth pulled. Only has the two bottom fangs left, rest is all gums. She still catches mice.

I was out putting around on the hog when I spotted this sign. Made me chuckle.

These are print blocks, of what appears to be Hi-Standard Sentinels. They would be used in print/newspaper ads for the guns, adjacent to the copy.
