Some gun law advice?
In Illinois is there a law for shotgun magazine capacity? (aside from Chicago and the other messed up spots) also not for hunting use, just range use and clay shooting with some friends every now and then.

I googled your questions and got some interesting answers. You are correct that Cook County/Chicago apparently has some draconian measures regarding all firearms.
However you are limited to 3 rounds when hunting - one in the tube and two in magazine which must be blocked to hold only two rounds.
As I read the law, you are limited to 5 rounds in a semi auto, but no limit on pump guns.
If you're shooting on the range and doing clays, you'd obviously be safe with three rounds.
Here's a link to Illinois laws, but this section primarily addresses hunting.
Illinois General Assembly - Illinois Compiled Statutes
I am not an attorney nor a LE. I suggest you make inquiries with the State Game and Fish agency, or with a local firearms organization.

State Hunting Regs should state any limits- they do in VA and have ever since I can remember. Once saw a Fed. warden that had to really stand on it but got a 4th shell in a shotgun that a guy had just bought. $100.00 fine and he never got a shot off. Had only been in the Dove field 10 minutes. Guess she was trying to make a name for herself. But, as they say, the law is the law.

Sporting clay and Skeet rules only allow 2 shells in the gun. They are National rules. I don't know about any State but North Carolina but here when shooting out behind the barn and State reg. hunting we can load the gun. Larry

Hunting regulations R/E magazine capacity, for example, often differ from non hunting laws when it comes to firearms.
Best place to get an accurate answer to your question is probably the states AG office.

I've never seen a stock shot gun that you were able to even come close to loading a 4th shell .. most you can't get half of the 4th shell in let alone for it to actually load .. I though all the plugs were standard size which wouldn't allow the loading of the 4th shell !!

The Remington 870 in my bedroom has four rounds of 00 Buck in the magazine and an empty chamber right now. If it is not over after four rounds I've either lost or am going hand to hand. If I take it hunting I put the plug back in the magazine, before I get to the field.

The only limitations that I have ever been aware of, in the WI/MN/MI area (and relating to hunting) was this: any hunting of migratory species that fell under Federal rules, such as waterfowl and woodcock, requires that the gun be limited to 3 shells total. Hunting of species such as ruffed grouse, pheasants, etc. the capacity was not limited.

The magazine plugs in my 97's are out, but I don't hunt with them. They are my SASS shotguns.

The only limitations are for "hunting". Most action shooting shotguns have extended mag tubes installed and hold at least 6, some cases more and perfectly legal in IL. (Downstate that is).
