Though im from Texas--iv'e never heard of Horsehead, Texas. I forget what book I saw it listed in as one of the "towns" along one of the trail drives, but was wondering if anyone ever heard of a place called: Horsehead? Texas....

Im kinda getting interested in learning more about old trail drives starting from San Antonio and heading to Sedalia, Mo--in Montana--etc. I know that many-a-drive-did go through and still does) Bandera.

BTW, yes--I AM still watching season 5 of Rawhide! I noticed the powers that be who made the show--took good historical detailin making the show. Funny liberties taken-was hills in the background of where Nueces, County courthouse supposedly was located in about 1869-1871. :D

Anyone have any unusual names of places that were stops of sorts--along some trail drive route?

we used to live 30 miles N of Sedalia, Mo., and still get there every so often. There's one very good gun shop/pawn shop there.. he carries a lot of reloading material, firearms, accessories etc. and his trades are very fair, and the guys tell me that a new shop has opened with an in door range, where you can rent handguns & even some Class III weapons to use there.

I wonder about Dade County & Greene County Missouri plus Buffalo, Mo. being on the route of the drives... but I'm just guessing... all fall south of Sedalia & are dern nice areas to visit & travel through.

Hey Ringo.. it has been a spell since you've mentioned your good lady.. just how is she doing now? Know that both Sabrina (?spelling?) & you remain in our prayers sir.

On second thought Ringo... we did some work around Golden City, Mo., west & south of Greenfield, on an ATT building back in the 90's, which was in more open & flatter terrain than Greene County is.. If I had to drive a large herd of cattle I'd look for the easiest terrain to keep track of them on while you move them up the trail.

Id love to ride along on a drive some time--just to see what one is like. They have a wagon train that goes to San Antonio once a year-something I want to do as well.

They still do a cattle drive that ends up in Ellsworth KS starting in Texas. I think it takes about a month or so and anyone can join in along the way.

I lived in West Texas in the 1970s-80s and have been in the Horsehead Crossing area many times. I don't remember there being any towns or people living anywhere near Horsehead Crossing, sort of isolated out in the desert. Just like much of West Texas.

The old Texas Trail to Montana went across our ranch, admittedly before it was our ranch.
I spent 40 years on cattle drives. Longest ones was only 3 to 5 days. I can tell you it quits bein' fun the first day..

I can see why those Texas kids was plumb crazy by the time they got to Kansas or Montana.

When we finished the drive, we would load our horses in a truck and haul them home.. Always stopped in Chugwater at the Texaco Gas Station.. There was no bar allowed in Chug. My Grand Dad would go to the drug store next door, and buy a six pack of Grain Belt beer. We'd sit around the grease pit at the Texaco station and have a cold one.

Back when I was a kid it was kinda interesting sitting there drinking a beer, as the gas station owner was also the Deputy Sheriff.

He always said "If that kid is doin' a man's job and he's settin' next to his Dad, I dammed well reckon he can have a beer."
