Secondhand Lions!
Saw this movie last week (while I was waiting to see if I would be picked for jury duty!)
Never heard of it before; it was released back in 2003.
Apparently it was never really marketed well, and only took in about $41 M in it's theater run.
Maybe it's just me, but I've seen more and more really good movies that don't get any marketing by the studios just because they have a conservative, good old American theme to them.
This one, I think, was a pretty good movie.
Stars Michael Caine, Haley Joe Osment and the irrepressible, and always watchable, Robert Duvall!
Check it out; I'm sure you folks will like it.
Seems to be mostly available either as PPV, streaming from Youtube and Amazon, or on dvd from Amazon and others.
I snagged a dvd from Amazon for just over $4 used. Streaming can be found for as little as $2.99
Check it out.

It is a great movie. The guns used in it were provided by a friend of mine and the shooting was done by another friend of mine who does a lot of firearms and explosives work on locally shot movies (Austin TX). He also made that little skeet thrower on the trailer that they bought and we still use it.

Wow I guess it depends on the local. I was excited at the previews and watched it in the theater then owned it on VHS. I think we have a disc of it now.

Fantastic movie! If I remember correctly, I went to YouTube and found some alternate endings. They were fun to watch too.

I've seen very good movies.....
I've seen very good movies that were 'sleepers'. This was one of them. When I was a movie-goer I'd pick a movie I hadn't heard much about and just go watch it myself. Sometimes I was pleasantly surprised.
Flying upside down through the barn. Go out with a bang.
The fight.
The 'great rival'.
Having hallucinations at night.
Good movie I wouldn't mind seeing again sometimes. Not your typical 'formulaized' movie. Very original.

I wasn't too keen on it when I first saw it but over the years I've come to realize that it was MUCH better than I first thought.

Decent movie, but far from memorable. Certainly not the best effort of either actor.

It was Texas Song writing Ace, the Wacko from Waco, Billy Joe Shaver.
He and Duval are friends.

Another (more recent) Duval movie that is worth watching is "A Night In Old Mexico." Billy Joe Shaver has a bit part in it too.

"Get Low" was a little known Duvall movie I really enjoyed. I believe a lot of guys here would as well.

I had never heard of it before until one of my sons called awhile back and said, "Dad, you've got to see this movie. Those two old guys remind me exactly of you and Uncle Kev!"
Hmmm. After watching it, I'm not sure if I should take that as a compliment or not...but the more I think about it, I guess he was right.
Either way, I thought it was a great movie. Thoroughly entertaining.

Been a favorite of mine since I first saw it. Great humor and entertaining adventure without the filth the movie makers think they have to include in today's films.

I thought of this movie this last week when the news of the sanctuary lions tigers and bears being killed.
Both of those guys were ready to face a man eating lion, and they face a lion just like them. Jasmine turns out to become the family pet and guard.

Great movie! The pairing of Cain and Duvall made for movie magic. My favorite scene is the opening showing the long entry road with all the sign's, I want a place like that!

An old friend, now deceased brought a dvd of the movie in when he was framing and wiring the interior of my shop building a number of years back. He said that when he saw the initial scene with the salesman he immediately thought of me. I really didn't think I was that bad, but then again I don't have any problems out here either.

We are big fans of the movie and think it is great and a lot of fun. I loved Hub telling Mae's boyfriend he was lucky that Jasmine got to him before he and Garth did. It is also fun to watch the original ending with everybody who showed at the funeral to pay their respects: Walter and his wife and kids, the four hoods now grown men, a French Foreign Legion honor guard and even the sheik making an appearance to show his respects.

I still have a copy of SHL on VHS, but haven't used my VHS player for years. SHL is one of my wife's favorites. Another one she really likes is Happy, Texas, I have it on VHS also.
I got a steal of a price on a new Sanyo combination VHS/DVD player from H-E-B's electronics section about a year ago (when they still had an electronics section), it had been sitting on a shelf there for at least six months. I offered $25 for it, and they accepted. I still have many old movies on VHS, but I hardly ever watch them. The picture quality of the old VHS tapes has deteriorated quite a bit with age, and some of mine are probably close to 30 years old. But I just can't bring myself to pitch them.

I watched this movie years ago on DVD, enjoyed it, then flipped the DVD over and discovered the stories about the making of the movie. The owners of the house appeared to tell their tale, and low and behold it was my college roommate with whom I had played football with. I had not seen or heard from him since being apart of his wedding, long ago. With a little research I was able to find him and made a trip down to hippieland for a visit. As it turns out, he and his wife had bought the house to raise their two boys in a very traditional manner and almost went broke trying to keep the house in working order. About the time they were going to give up on the house and sell, the movie opportunity came along. Part of the agreement was to remodel and fix the house to their specifications after filming. It was great to see the remodeled house and to catch up with an old friend.

Second Hand Lions and John Wayne in HATARI...Red Buttons' rocket scene and milking the goats is classic! Two of my frequently-watched favorites, right up there with my all-time favorite...JEREMIAH JOHNSON; the original version, not the later one!

Like the way the "Duck pond" is used near the end of the movie.
Yep, it's a "Keeper".

Something that we both love about the film is how when we suggest it to people who may have heard of it but never seen or never heard of it is how much they enjoy it after seeing it. It is a fun little family film without all the trash you find in so much now. It is not full of profanity, sex, violence and even one of the most fun violent part is done humorously and innocently. Hub and the four hood was priceless and well done. I love Walter telling Garth that he needed to get in, Garth asks why, Walter well there's four of them, CRASH!!, Well, three of them. Wendy always said if that if a guy didn't like Secondhand Lions and The Princess Bride they probably would not be interested in the type of person she is. Both of those are movies that she and I find to be fun, entertaining films that appeals to the young at heart.

I believe the cartoons were drawn by Berkeley Breathed. He created "Bloom County".
