Talking Awesome Sauce!

Hey guys! Now a more happy thread. Guys a couple years ago I went to Panama thanks to Uncle Sam. Spent about 2 months there and worked by rear end off, but it was a gorgeous country and the food was really good! Pollo guisado (stewed chicken), rice and beans, fried fish (piscado frito) and some of the sweetest and juiciest fresh fruit I’ve ever had.

On most dining tables even in some remote villages and towns was always a bottle of orange hot sauce:

Guys this is one of the most unique and best hot sauces I’ve ever had in my world travels. It is D’Elidas (maybe other brands too) chombo pepper sauce. Chombos are a close relative to the habanero or scotch bonnet peppers. This sauce is made in Panama and has the curious addition of mustard in the recipe. It really makes for an awesome sauce that is amazing on chicken and any Latin American foods.

After I got back to the US I played hell trying to find some for sale with no luck. But recently I found its now for sale on Amazon and is reasonably priced. I bought five bottles and am already down to 4 1/2.

If anybody out there likes trying new hot sauces don’t pass this one up. Just thought I’d share. Take care gang!

-Jay

My BIL will love a bottle for Christmas. He's crazy for hot sauces.

Thanks for the tip.

Thanks for the tip! I get along with hot sauce just fine! I use Chipotle sauce instead of steak sauce. That is, on meat that needs sauce, like hamburger, not a great steak. I'm about to cook up some grits and sausage for breakfast and decide what sauce to hit it with. Decisions, decisions . . . .

I got my package today via amazon.

Unbelievable. I have to order more for my BIL, he ain't getting this bottle.

I love mustard and this sauce is mustard based with the perfect amount of pepper heat. It's gonna be great on chicken and pork. If I can find some.

In a pinch it aught to do well on road kill.

Get yourself a bottle and enjoy.

Thanks for the tip again.

Ordered 11.5ounce bottle, will arrive next week, first application will be applied to eggs/sausage breakfast. Two one second burst-shakes will be applied if the desired results are not achieved a second application will be applied until my taste-buds comply or I need to drink beer with my breakfast.

My wife learned to cook in the fine traditions of her German and English farmer ancestors (YUCK!). After we had been married about 6 months, she discovered the spice rack my mom gave her as a shower gift! Food began to have flavor again, and most of that flavor was good! Then at about 8 years into our life together, I bought salsa for our corn chips. On her first taste a grin spread ear to ear, and she began to salsa everything except oatmeal! about 3 months later she discovered HOT SAUSE! (Many a night, I was in the bathroom, begging for the ice cream to take affect!) My mother lived in Florida and Alabama in this time frame and sent us every different Hot Sauce she saw for sale, One of which was the same or at least similar to the OP's picture.

Now days, there is always 1 to 3 bottles of hot sauce on the table and around a dozen different verities in the pantry! My wife likes to keep our life together SPICEY!

I worked in Colombia for awhile back in the early 1970s. They had a hot sauce there that was so hot that more than a couple of drops would make your food inedible. I discovered that firsthand. I was warned before using it but didn't heed. It was made with some super-hot local pepper variety. Sort of unusual, as generally, most Colombian food is not spicy.

What about Delidas makes it so good?

My personal favorite for many years has been a thicker-consistency hot sauce (San-Luis brand, made in Mexico) and sells at H-E-B for only $1.03/31 oz white plastic bottle. It's not too hot, not too mild, just perfect. Close to Cholula, but better. I rebottle it into smaller glass bottles and always keep a bottle in the glove boxes of each vehicle for use on Whataburgers. Works great for corn-on-the-cob also. We keep one of these on a lanyard on the rear view mirror. It's quite the culinary band-aid.

I like the idea of a mustard based sauce.
How is it on the heat scale compared with Sriracha?
That's almost as much heat as I can enjoy anymore..

JayFramer is right, D'ELidas Chombo hot sauce is good stuff! I have an assortment of hot sauces in the kitchen. Over time, I've settled on a few favorites. There's a huge choice out there and more often than not, there's little difference among them. What struck me about this Chombo sauce is the mustard in it. So I gave it a try on my eggs this morning (burp!) It is truly unique. Haven't tasted a sauce quite like it. Yes, it's hot alright - don't get carried away with it. But, it's full of flavor even in small doses. Thanks for the pointer, JayFramer!

Have over 10 different sauces in the pantry and a bottle of tabasco on the table, but the habenaro based sauces from years ago in SoFl are just too much now.

I also like mustard based sauces, so I ordered a bottle to give it a test run for the flavor.

I discovered a restaurant in Maryland just over the border from me that features a flavor of chicken wings called the Golden BBQ. It has a mustard based sauce that a cook had left over from chicken entre and decided to see how it would do with with chicken wings. Not only do they taste good, but for those with blood sugar issues, I found that they don't shoot up my blood sugar. So a mustard based sauce is a very viable option for chicken wings and expect it would be good with a lot of things.

My Cuban MIL likes to slather steaks with mustard before she grills them. It's surprisingly good. This might be worth a try to kick it up a notch.
