Default Right Turn on Red

It's time in Georgia to formally change the
state's Rules of the Road to indicate a right
turn on red has the right=of=way at all
times without the drivers slowing down.

Those with green lights should learn that
that color indicates a "Go Slow" zone. Unless
you want to hurt the feelings of the right turn
on red drivers. Which no one wants to do.

In Illinois we have right turn on red after a complete stop .. One should always have to make a complete stop if they do not have the right of way ..

Sadly there have been a number of people killed in the area I live in when they didn't stop before turning on red or at stop sign and the car with the right of way hit their vehicle !!

Same thing here in Michigan. Red light means "jump out in front of the guy who has the green light." Then take your sweet time accelerating.

And there are often pedestrians who stayed longer in the stripes to that right than allowed. But that does not excuse running one down, even if by accident.

This had best be a humor thread.

Mind you don't have G-DOT "fix" the situation with a generous application of traffic circles.

In NY it means pull out in front of on-coming traffic traveling at 35 MPH on a 2 lane road then immediately turn on your left blinker and stop until you can turn into the McDonald's parking lot. Happened to me today. I cussed so much I made myself blush.

I am SO busy watching for phone distracted drivers in Virginia,,,
that NONE of these other issues come into play.

Ten years ago, I considered myself a conservative defensive driver.
Now, my level of defense while driving has easily doubled.

My last two cars have shown stats like duration of trip, average speed,, etc,,,
my current average speed is fully 5 MPH lower than what it was 2 years ago.

I am OK with that,,,

With nearly 2 million miles under my belt and carrying licenses to drive anything from a motorcycle to nuclear missiles, I have a few pet peeves. My number one is the subject of this thread. I believe the right to turn on red will be eventually stopped because of those drivers that don't stop. On the same note, stop signs are now yield signs. Your vehicle has to come to a complete stop BEHIND the stop sign, not 3 car lengths past the sign.

Turning on red doesn't bother me,i'm confused watching people come to stop signs and act like they are not there.

Back when I learned to drive you could NOT make right turns on red in Iowa unless it was posted that it was allowed. Home town had 7 stop & go lights, only 1 allowed right turn on red.
My older sister had been living in CA for a few years, came back home for a visit and got a ticket for it.

I believe most states right turn on a red can only be done if there is no traffic from the left. Besides I am probably the most hated driver in the US, I never drive faster than the speed limit.

Rolling stops is a problem in the town I live in and the surrounding area also .. the police are just as bad as others as I have seen them do the same in a police car making a car brake suddenly ..

Another young (23) woman was killed just 2 days ago .. luckily her 8 month old son survived as he was buckled in a proper car seat in the middle position of the back seat .. if he would have been on the side and not the middle of the seat .. from the looks he wouldn't have survived either .. as the car had massive damage on the driver side door post ..

My brother hit a car broadside when they did a rolling stop spinning it around in a 360 spin in July this year in the middle of town on wet pavement as it had just rained ..

No, my sister is. She gets in the fast line and drives five miles an hour below the limit.

I won't ride with her. I tell her some foaming road rager is going to shoot her one day. And that Kentucky has laws against doing what she does. She just says, "It's their problem."

U tube has some good videos on right turns without stopping. Look under stupid drivers, poor drivers, crazy drivers. Haven't tried dead drivers yet, but there had to be some.

I see you've visited Vegas.

Right turn on red is seen by too many as a right, not a generously granted favour.

As for the OP's post, he must have french blood. Priorite a droit and all that.

Generally the rule is "Right turn on red after stop, if clear." If it's clear why can't I make a left turn on red?

On the posh side of Vegas that is allowed IF you drive a high end Audi, Lexus, Cadillac or Range Rover. I am seriously considering a dashcam just to shut-up the naysayers who say I have never witnessed such events.

The most expensive car has the right of way. Or was that the car with the most damage has the right of way.

Tell her not to come to Virginia,, they ticket slow drivers in the left lane.

IIRC, the speed limit is not of concern,,
they ticket you if your speed is below that of the traffic flow.

So, if everyone is at 5 MPH over,, and you are impeding traffic by driving speed limit,,,
they can ticket you,,

That may not be exact law,, but, that is what the local news reported.

On another point,,
locally, the DOT has changed almost EVERY left turn traffic light from solid red to flashing amber.
No need to stop, if there is no traffic coming, you can turn left at the traffic light.
It is great,, the light that I use to turn onto our road had a red light.
You had to sit and wait for a green arrow,, and wait,, and wait,,,

Now, you just drive into the left turn jug handle, and go through the intersection,,,

It is even better than a traffic circle!!

The newspaper has reported that if an intersection has not been updated,,,
DOT is getting LOTS of calls, asking WHEN the traffic light will be changed to flashing amber.

Hmmmmmmmmm,,, Patience!!

I'm always amazed by people who drive like this. If you want to drive at a lower speed than other traffic (regardless of the speed limit) then do it in the right lane. To get in the left lane, and stay there, with a line of frustrated, angry motorists queued up behind you to make a dangerous right-side pass, is the ultimate in passive-aggressive highway behavior.

I work until 11 PM, and have a 38 mile drive home, mostly on I-95. I get in the right lane and stay there...set my cruise control at or slightly above the posted limit...and let other motorists pass me on the left. I NEVER have anyone tailgate me, or make rude gestures, etc.

Here in Maryland, you can make a left on red if both streets are one-way.

I'm relieved to see that people in other states also don't stop before turning right on red...I was beginning to think it's only here in Maryland that we have such drivers!

If it were up to me, right-on-red would be gone...too many people abuse it.

I drive a lot in Germany, and we could learn a thing or ten from their driver licensing system and highway laws. For example...

* The driving age is 18...
* Driver training is comprehensive and expensive...several grand.
* Driving laws are strictly enforced.
* No right on red.
* Drunk-driving laws are very tough.
* On any road, slower traffic keeps to the right.
* You cannot drive in the left lane unless you are passing someone.
* You cannot pass someone on the right.
* It is illegal to make rude gestures at another driver.

For an enthusiast, this is like Heaven on Earth!

If you are not allowed to make gestures,,, what do you do with your hand that is not on the steering wheel??

I would probably get fat(ter!)
I would need to keep a Big Mac in my hand to keep me from getting too many tickets!!

Just kidding!!

You use that hand to shift. That's another difference between Europe and the USA: Most cars over there have standard transmissions, even cars that are sold here as automatic-only.

This past May, I spend 10 days in Germany and Austria. My rental car was a Ford Kuga (sold here as the Escape)...with a 6-speed transmission.

The 9,300 RPM shifts sound REAL sweet!!

My wife DOES fuss when I do that,,,

I was behind a female, several years ago, that waited for the green light to turn red, so she could turn right. I am not making this up.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

In a nearby collage town, they have right turn green lights
for those that don't know how to use the traffic option of turning right on red.

What I want is,
stop and turn left on red when there is (NOVP) no other vehicles present.
Sittin' there stairin at a bright red light like one doesn't have good sense, is senseless.

Here in Michigan, the most dented up rust bucket has the right of way. Or, at least, he'll make you wish you had yielded to him!

If you think red lights are a problem, you should see the 4 way stops in my little town. They are akin to navigating a figure 8 race. You sometimes wish you had a helmet and roll cage.

That's another Rules of the Road change needed
in Georgia. The rule should state that a stop sign
is merely a cautionary suggestion.

I hate four-way stops. 'Round here folks come to a stop, and for some reason, they immediately pull forward. No matter what. I guess they forget it's a FOUR-WAY stop.

When you "tie" with someone stopping on your right or left, you wave for them to proceed (gotta love the deep south!). They refuse to go, so you pull out, THEN THEY JUMP out and almost hit you.

One of the problems here is a lot of people drive like they learned to drive in Mexico. Or they have no DL at all.

you guys would just love to drive in Ft. Collins. the other rule is just because your light turned green doesn't mean you should be the first car in the intersection.

Talking AND BAD DRIVING IS A SURPRIZE?

I'm more surprised with good/courteous driving. A wave of thanks or someone waiving you it's OK to pull out in front of them shocks me.

your sister is ,,,,,RIGHT........the signs indicate the MAXIMUM LIMIT.......not the minimum......
