Deadwood: the movie is coming in 2019!
Deadwood fans, maybe you haven't heard the news. The movie verision has, at long last, been green-lighted by HBO and is expected to start shooting this fall. It's been more than a decade since the series ended so abruptly and without resolving some major story lines. The two-hour movie might answer a few of those.
No word yet on which of the original actors will be in the movie, but here's hoping Timothy Olyphant and Ian MacShane and many of the rest will return for it. And whoever takes Powers Booth's role will have some big boots to filll.
Deadwood lasted three seasons originally, which was a shame because it was a great series. Looking forward to the movie already!
A little reminder as we wait for it....and safe for family viewing....

I watched the series long after it ended due ro all the raves. After the main characters all colluded in the brutal murder of a prostitute to save the life of another one for the slimmest of rationales, I had to wonder why I wasted my time on such dispicable characters. The continual over the top use of the f-word was tiresome too. But different strokes for different folks.

The prostitutes death soured me as well. Violence for the sake of showing more violence.
Did enjoy the first season though; Wild Bill, Calamity Jane, Mr. Wu , etc.

Virtually every episode had some sort of violence in it. The Old West was a violent place, and life (and death) was cheap. It wasn't sensationalism...it was reality.
There was a point to the killing of the prostitute...Trixie (Al's favorite prostitute and former paramour) had shot Mr. Hearst (who was the most evil character on the show) but didn't kill him. She did so because he had Ellsworth killed, who was probably one of the best people in the camp. Hearst demanded Trixie's death, or the entire camp would have suffered (an implied but nonetheless real threat.) Al still loved/cared for Trixie, and didn't want to kill her, nor did he want the camp to suffer...so, he made a choice. Knowing that Hearst didn't get a good look at Trixie's face (she exposed herself to Hearst before shooting him, drawing his attention away from her face) he selected a prostitute to die in her stead...someone he didn't love.
Yes, from a moral standpoint, it was heinous...should the camp have risen and fought Hearst and his henchmen, and suffered many casualties in the process? Or by this single death, could the camp be spared, Trixie be spared, and Hearst satisfied so he would leave the camp as he had been planning to do? Al's choice wasn't what many would have chosen to do, but it resulted in one death instead of many.
Bear in mind that these characters were often not exemplary citizens themselves...we tend to want TV shows to have character extremes: all good or all bad. That's so rarely the reality, and in those wild and wooly mining camps (and these were mostly real historical characters) even the "good" folks were barely better than the worst.

I don't hold it against anyone who found the series, or even just certain parts of its subject matter, not to their liking. They are in the minority, though, as Deadwood was a rousing success among viewers and critics alike.
GKC has made some excellent observations about the show. I think what made it especially interesting and fun to watch was the interplay between good and evil in many, if not most, of the characters. History tells us that the real Deadwood was a rough-and-tumble place, as were many on the frontier, and vice was rampant. Deadwood is entertainment, first and foremost, and although many of the characters are based on real people, it's a 21st century interpretation of the times.
As an aside about the crude language: the show's writer and creator, David Milch, has said that the extensive use of the f-word and other profanities was his attempt to convey the quality, if not the actual content, of conversation among characters of this type. Using terms most commonly said back then would not have translated well to today. In fact, Milch's research indicated that religious insults were much more prevalent in the 1880s than the sexual ones that predominate today.

Well said GKC.
Out of all the murders Swearingen committed (or that were done at his behest) there is only one that folks here find heinous?

Like I said, different strokes for different folks. The show started out as entertaining but got more ridiculous as it went on. I watched them on DVD so also watched the extras and heard the writer's justification for the language and found it very weak. Whatever the justification, it still was tedious. I think even they realized that as both my wife and I noticed the use of the f-word and others diminished later. As for the murder of the prostitute, there was no need to explain why it happened since the show belabored the reasoning itself, gamely trying to convince the viewer that it made any sense.
What brought us to the show was watching Olyphant in Justified. Now that was a good show, so we hoping for the same with Deadwood. Not even close and Olyphant's character was annoying and his performance histrionic. Deadwood was Ian McShane's show all the way and about its main saving grace even though his part was pretty silly at times. I don't say the show didn't have its moments, but it was going downhill fast in the last season and the ridiculous prostitute murder storyline just accelerated it. I realize this is all just my opinion and lots of people like it. Heck, there are still a lot of people watching Walking Dead, inexplicable as that may be.

Olyphant's star turn in Justified was the best I've ever seen him, and I never tire of watching "re-runs" now and then. His Deadwood character was not as compelling as Raylan Givens, but I thought he did a nice job with it. And yeah, MacShane's Al Swearingen was a tour de force. You couldn't stop watching and listening to him -- he commanded his scenes.

I never got around to watching the last season of Justified. By the 5ime I got there the continual breaching of law enforcement guidelines was getting a bit over the top.
Deadwood, however, I have watched twice on DVD. I remember way back there was talk of a 2 hour “wrap up” movie, but all the sets had been torn down so it was never going to happen. But news that the storyline will be wrapped up is welcome. I’ll have to watch it the whole lot third time before the movie comes out.
