Default Had company at the range today ....

... and I thought about bringing him home for dinner.

But, I was a good boy ... so I will be having chicken burgers instead of pheasant under glass.

He was pecking around right in front of me for 20 minutes. I ended up shooting over his head ... many times. He didn't even flinch.

Pretty birds. First one I've seen this close up.

Hope you didn't part any head feathers on that guy. Strange how animals don't let shooting noise bother them.

We were at the range not long ago, I was shooting the .243 and a flock of 9 turkeys wandered onto the range. The noise never fazed them. I think it's because they grew up hearing gunshots.

The only "turkey shots" we took were with the phones shooting photos.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

We used to have a range out in the country that had gray squirrels that would walk behind the targets while we were shooting. They would seem to look for splintered wood from the target stands, then go off. The noise seemed to attract them.

Several years ago, I took my son to an outdoor shooting range run by the Forestry Service in north GA. We had a small black bear wander out of the woods about 25 feet from the end of the bench. He then went parallel to the range and behind some fruit trees. He stayed there several minutes eating while we (probably 6 people total) were shooting. At one point, I walked down to check targets with a member of another party and when we got to the targets, we realized neither of us was armed and there was a bear in the area.

This spring I was at my local range, I was shooting on the rifle range. I just finished reloading my rifle looked up and there was a big old turkey walking across the range, I continued to shoot until he/it walked behind my target. another time a doe wandered onto the range. Love shooting outdoors in the country.

Our club has about 2000 acres in wild life management feed lots.

I remember while firing for qualification many years back. A Jack rabbit went behind the 200 Yd. butts. Everyone got Maggies Drawers & the rabbit left intact. True story.

Wish I would have run into some of his relatives while I was hunting them.

My experience of pheasants was in England. In some areas I think they are over-managed. The reason I say this is because if you drive up some roads in an old Land Rover they associate the noise with food and come running out of the hedgerows. Dumber than a whole crate of hammers IMHO.

At Fort Benning, Georgia, about 1970. Set up the range for annual qualifications with M60 machineguns. Long gully between the firing line and multiple targets on rising ground on the other side. At the first burst of fire a herd of wild pigs took off from the gully, headed directly into the target area. Two days later we had a big company barbeque with families invited.

Pigs can do a lot of damage to crops. When a herd gets into a peanut field overnight they can tear up several acres easily.

A few years back I was Hunting Pheasants locally but without our usual four legged friend to assist. We had a long pleasant walk through the Fields that day and saw nothing. As soon as we returned to the parked vehicle and unloaded our Shotguns, two Pheasants strolled across our path....... pretty much gave us the "finger". HA!

Some years ago...I saw a pheasant cock bird look both ways, before safely running across a heavily traveled 4 lane highway.
