Turner Classic Movies (TCM)
Last night while channel surfing I came across this one on TCM.
"The DI" staring Jack Webb, remember him?
He played a Marine Drill Instructor and rather well.
Really enjoyed the old 1957 movie.
Had one song in it which I liked, the Marines seemed motivated and joined in:
See if you can still whistle, I wasn't good at it.
Try to control yourself shouldazagged

Hold on a minute. I've gotta see if I can still whistle.
Nope!
Add that to the list of things that no longer work.

Tribe. Jan Michael was a hippie. He corrupted all the other boots. About half way through, when the DI busts in at 0300 to wake up everybody, the entire barracks is sitting in lotus on their racks. "Ohhmmmmmm"

Watched it also. First time seeing it, Jack Webb was his iconic self/ style!
Just the facts! 😊

Full Metal Jacket was the most realistic. Timed to time of year with the Christmas scene. How do I know? Fictional platoon was 3092, 1969. I was in platoon 3093, 1969!

His main squeeze in the movie, a former Miss USA Jackie Loughery, wound up being his third wife.

TCM is still good, but I believe it's gone downhill since Robert Osborne passed away.
Osborne lent a touch of elegance to the channel. He had the ability to make a studio set look like a place where someone actually lived, made it look like part of a house. And his love and knowledge of film was genuine.
The current host, Ben Mankiewicz looks like a cardboard cutout compared to Osborne. His delivery is wooden, stilted. Looks like he's reading everything he says. Probably is.
I still check the schedule every day to see if there might be something good coming on in the evening that I might watch with dinner.
But it just isn't the same.

I tuned into that movie last night and I don't remember ever seeing it. I got tired of all the shouting and changed the channel.

I watched it more for the nostalgia than for any other reason. It was OK, not great! Quite predictable. That said, I like watching Webb at his "role". I don't think he could have had a better Series custom made for him than Dragnet!

I haven't seen this movie in years. And years. I'm away from home and logged on to my cable provider to set it up to record. For some reason, the stupid software (theirs) stopped allowing people to set up recording remotely. I had the option to "buy" the recording on my DVR, which I don't like to do.
Anyway, I contacted the cable company and the Customer Service rep told me that he set my account up so that I get to rent it at no charge.
I'll be home tomorrow night and will check on my TV to see what he actually did. If anything.
As I recall, the female lead in that movie was Patricia Neal. She played the mother of a recruit who wasn't making it through Boot Camp. I won't post a spoiler.
BTW, what other "USMC" movie was Jack Webb in? And what actor that had a major role in a Jack Webb TV show was also in the movie?

I have a buddy that is also a fan of the movie. When he comes over and knocks on the door I yell out "I CAN'T HEAR YOU" and when I open the door I tell him to 'CENTER YOURSELF IN THE HATCH". Cracks him up every time. Webb was quite the character on screen and off.

Here's an early R. Lee Ermy movie.
I think it's a lot better than the trailer shows:
The Boys of Company C

Gunny Ermy was a real DI. That’s why he’s so believable in FMJ! Again, being in boot camp at PISC in ‘69, the authenticityof FMJ is remarkable. I have a mouthful of crowns today to remind me what challenging a DI would get you!

Mrs. Houston and I enjoyed watching The Drill Instructor too. It seemed that TCM was the only channel that knew it was Veteran's Day. I do not have any way of knowing how realistic it was, but find it hard to believe that Owens made it to graduation because of a visit by his mother to his CO. Also hard that to follow that the captain did not know better than to trust his Sergeant regarding Owens. Overall good movie. We also watched The Longest Day and Tora, Tora, Tora. Thanks to all who served.

I was in the Army, not the Marines, and we had a DS (Drill Sergeant) who was a lay minister as well as a combat veteran. I never heard him curse or use profanity, and the "strongest" thing I ever heard him call some poor recruit was "silly person". Funny thing was I saw grown men reduced to tears by being called a "silly person". I tried very hard to avoid any negative attention by that particular DS as I didn't really want to find out what being called a "silly person" felt like.
Regards,
Dave
