I find that I am required by the Creator to have a "Chinese Fire Drill" hunting adventure every few years. It makes for interesting story telling around the camp fire.

I was aiming at a groundhog out my bedroom window with a scoped 22 rifle. He was running toward a hole next to my house's foundation, so I needed him to be dead real soon! As the angle of the shot got steeper and steeper (or more and more steep), by the time I squeezed the trigger, I shot and killed my pillow at the top of my bed! The stupid groundhogs' always seem to have a smile on their face, but the view through the scope at the instant of ignition, was most aggravating!
That was about 1989, and everyone but me still laughs when I talk about it!

My not to bright nephew shows up with a ripped up hood on his Ram Charger. I looked at it and said " shooting off your hood down hill?" Hangs his head and says "Yes" Bad, part was there were 2 rips! Slow learner, that kid.

Shooting story!
I remember a story that happened a few years back! A young fellow was woodchuck hunting and rested his rifle on the near side railroad track. He got a rude awaking when he pulled the trigger. He lived but the shrapnel from that small high speed 22 did a lot of damage!

Glad you weren’t resting your rifle on your foot. Without a lot of elaboration, I once blew a hole in a hunting jacket I was using as a rifle rest when part of it flipped up out of my scopes line of sight. I quietly discarded the jacket and placed an order with MidwayUSA for an identical one. Never confessed doing that until now.

I've got several range bags, once used as rifle rests, with one side melted and or shredded.
Want to buy one? Half off.

Funny stories here. The stories and opinions fly around here if you mention the fact that, (under normal conditions), bullets travel in an arc to the target. Another one: A bullet fired from a barrel whose bore is perfectly level, and on level ground, and a bullet dropped at the same instance will hit the ground at the same time.
Have a blessed day,
Leon

I have a friend who has a nice, neat .30 hole through the bottom window frame in her bedroom, caused by the same phenomenon.
It seems there was a nice spike buck in her front yard, and she did not account for the height of a set of see-through scope rings above the bore of her 30-30.

As long as your barrel is out in the open, that will not happen.

Even when the boreline is oriented so that bullets go where they are supposed to, there is a certain amount of hot gas expelled at the muzzle, even with a flash suppressor installed. I sewed a patch on my shooting bag to remind me of this fact.

the gas coming out of the cylinder gap will ruin the shooting bags you are using them for a rest if you are shooting any magnum round

Funny thing is that there are so many experienced experts on this subject around here. It does happen. I never shot a hole in anything doing this stuff, but I have done some damage from muzzle blast and stained a pair of coveralls with gap blast using them wadded up as a revolver rest.
On shooting across the vehicle thing I am not a fan of the idea. Years ago deer hunter, in the local area, fired across the top of his car, Unfortunately his buddy was on the other side and took the round right in the top of his head. I hate the idea of anyone possibly being anywhere within a big arc around my muzzle. Around here there are vast distances, lots of country roads and 4x4 roads. You want to road hunt fine. Do it myself. Go for a ride. Cruise the back roads. BS my buddy. See what we see, Casual. But, get away from the vehicle to shoot. Want a rest, use a fence post, a tree, an extendable shooting stick.Ya, I have used the hood myself. Go park around prairie dog towns, put the bags on the hood and blast away. But, either by myself or one guy shooting and the other observing.
I was once with a BIL I no longer hunt with. Actually he turned into a drunk and is no longer a BIL. See a bobcat on my side of the truck. I have my window down. Next thing I know his 06 muzzle is right in front of me. I start yelling get it out the window and trying to shrink into the seat, KABOOM. Total moron. I was deaf as a post, my ears ringing and mad. He has the gall to blame me for missing because I was moving around. That was our last time hunting together.
Live and learn. Just stay safe and lean heavy on the learn part.

At work we are having problems at the range with folks who don't any experience with the AR shooting the over barricade due to this.
It's another good excuse to never shoot OVER a barricade on a two way range if you can manage it.

Your results are a time function! A bullet DROPPED is affected by the force of gravity(32 ft/sec squared) only in the Y axis. The bullet fired from a gun is affected by two forces, one in the X axis(? ft/ sec) and one in the Y axis(gravity). The resultant force of the fired bullet makes the bullet travel farther before it hits the ground. Distance equals time!

The rest of the story...…
As you can see in the pic, the muzzle is beyond the window opening by a couple of inches. My muzzle loader (.50 cal T/C Pro Hunter) is on a 'Pole Cat' bipod. That particular style bipod is height adjustable, and since I was sitting down I had is adjusted a tad on the high side so I could clear the opening with the muzzle. The bipod has a rubber 'neck' that allows the shooter to cant the rifle left/right, or move the rifle forward/rearward without having to re-position the legs. I was watching several deer in the beanfield through binoculars and a range finder. This good sized doe came into 63 yds and I decided to take her. I was sitting in a 'directors' chair so I was already a little low. As I shouldered the rifle I had to lean back a few inches to get the cross hairs on her shoulder. By doing that, unbeknownst to me, I pulled the muzzle inside the pop up blind and about an inch below the window opening. The rest is pretty much self explanatory. Fortunately, it's a cheap pop-up blind, and I have another one. I mostly bow hunt out of a tree stand anyway so it's no big deal.

Alaska back in 1970 .. we were sighting in a couple of rifles to go
moose hunting when a guy pulled up in a truck and proceeded to load and shoot a black powder 50 cal rifle .. He laid it across the hood of his truck and the first shot spider webbed his windshield .. couldn't even see thru the windshield glass for all the cracks .. Have always wondered how he managed to get it to his home .. Guess he drove with his head hanging out the drivers window ..
