My apologies for high jacking your thread. A forum member I bought a revolver from 11 years ago (and I presume has died), has had his email address taking over. Every month or so, I get an email demanding payment on an invoice. They have sent them to my business in an attempt to get my office to pay it. I never open the invoice, and forward the email to my anti-virus provider. But every email comes from a new email address, and installs software on my computer. My anti-virus software is quite good at containing the virus. But this has been going on for about 8 months. I only stumbled upon the forum connection, running the scammer down (the forum member). I do not hold him responsible at all. But this is what can happen I guess.

I'm guessing he won't get more than half a million at best.

I wonder how many, if any, people actually fall for these things, or the emails from Nigerian princes, or pleas from Syrian royalty that are now refugees, etc. I find it hard to believe anyone would but someone must or all of the scammers wouldn't continue to cast these lines.

When my brother and I owned apartment complexes, we had several Nigerian tribal Princes live in the complex at one time. As they moved out and left correspondence in their units. The grafters send letters by the hundred! And the truly desperate of their tribe, request assistance also. One of the problems is, Only the Crown prince has limited access to the accounts!

If you have a cab driver from Western Africa, the odds seem to be: He is a prince. The Columbus, Ohio area seems to attract quite a few of them because of the university. OSU is very popular in Africa. Also one of the collages in Edinburgh, Scotland! Then many of graduates of both have been hired by the State of Ohio. My wife's sorority sisters (OSU class of 78) had to scatter across North America to find jobs in their profession, but several African princesses, educated in Scotland, found jobs here! Very strange! Not an internet scam, but some sort of deal going on!

So, if you are contacted by an African Prince of some sort that is down on his luck........

Ivan the Butcher, but not a prince!

A good client told me he was going to a foreign country for a little "fun". A few weeks later I got an email from him that he had been robbed while celebrating, was detained, expressed remorse for his wanton ways, and disclosed other details, and asked me to wire funds to a real hotel account. Perfect grammar. He only needed $3000 to pay his fine and get a plane ticket back home. It seemed realistic and plausable. I checked with friends, he was in the foreign country, but not in jail. Someone had hacked enough of his info to make a realistic play.

Got one like this once:
IMPORTANT NOTICE
(Read Each Paragraph Carefully)

IF YOU HAVE HAD PREVIOUS MILITARY SERVICE, OR ARE NOW A MEMBER OF THE NATIONAL GUARD OR A RESERVE COMPONENT OF THE ARMED FORCES, BRING EVIDENCE WITH YOU. IF YOU WEAR GLASSES, BRING THEM. IF MARRIED, BRING PROOF OF YOUR MARRIAGE. IF YOU HAVE ANY PHYSICAL OR MENTAL CONDITION WHICH, IN YOUR OPINION, MAY DISQAULIFY YOU FOR SERVICE IN THE ARMED FORCES, BRING A PHYSICIAN’S CERTIFICATE DESCRIBING THAT CONDITION, IF NO ALREADY FURNISHED TO YOUR LOCAL BOARD.
etc. etc. etc......

Nobody addresses any of the recipients directly, which is why responding in any way, even to “scam the scammers”, is a waste of time. So is wondering how anybody “got” your e-mail address. Computer programs send out a gazillion of these basically on auto-pilot.

It’s likely a huge success if 1 out of 100,000 elicits a positive response. Now think about some of the gullible fools you know. For some folks, hope springs eternal. It’s a game of percentages.

I hear some people still buy tickets in state lotteries, run by the same folks who have been reaching into your paychecks forever.

Just this morning I received a very similar eMail from someone with a British-sounding name who described himself as the Vice Chairman of the International Investigations and Anti-Fraud Task Force delegated to African, Europe & American Region this year 2019. He also said something about his being associated with Interpol and the World Bank. I apparently won $3.1 Million USD in some national lottery, and I need to contact him to do the required paperwork before my winnings could be sent. Strange, I haven't bought any kind of lottery ticket in over 20 years. But maybe I did and just forgot about it.

Yesterday I received an email from the FBI informing me that I won an international lottery and they approved of my taking the money. 1.8 million. All I had to do was to call a Mr so and so who would help me to send $96 dollars with Western Union to pay the banking and delivery fee so I could get the check. The email was from Mr Wray himself, director of international lottery funds at the FBI. I thought the $96 was very reasonable. Usually the scammers want much more. I declined of course.

If someone calls you telling you to come pick up your prize, it probably will be the police or the FBI.

These scams go over and over again. My work email is getting multiple email scams every day sent out from my coworkers, all various messages, for at least the past two weeks. It's on Microsoft Cloud. The IT people in charge seem to not yet be able to put an end to it.

yup...
as well as India......

The university caters to international students versus local , IE: full tuition at the higher rate for being out of the country.
It is darn close to "impossible" for a local student to gain entry to the main campus , for freshman year....
