After having surgery to the veins in both lower legs I've had constant problems with pain and swelling. I tried some non-opiate* drugs the surgeon's office prescribed with poor results. I ran across this "drug" on the net called Conolidine and it looks like it might be worth trying. Have any of you used it?
Jim

* The side effects from opiates I briefly tried assured I'll never be a regular user.

I am prescribed Lidocaine patches for my back , they work . They were originally came up with for shingles . I've known people that put them on their knees , legs , all over . They make them over the counter now .

Pain

cronic pain sucks !! i happen to be a pain management patient and take opioids every day . if taken as prescribed they can be effective without the worries you hear about when they ( the media ) scream of opiate dangers . when my choice came down to opiates , more surgeries or live with the pain i chose the drugs for now . that may change some day as regular use decreases thier effectiveness . regular use also decreases the unwanted side effects . just wanted to share my openion as one who finds the use of opiates acceptable . i also agree with the additional Prayers . good luck and God bless .

The last 8-10 years have been murder. Since I turned 60, I broke both ankles at the same time. Gave me opiates and that sucked. Then broke my left knee in summer of 2016. Again, opiates for a couple of days then I switched (my choice) to Tylenol (1200 units twice a day). Last fall I had a triple fracture of my upper arm. Two months inactive, bed rest. Again opiates=never used them after a day or two due to side effects (dizziness, falling over, bad dreams). This spring (3 months after my arm, I fell and broke my left kneecap again (same one) and my upper shin. That was March=4 days in hospital and 2 months in convalescent hospital (Non weight bearing). 2 Months of rehab prescribed and I'm still in a wheelchair and rehab was extended for one to two more months. Teleworking for a month and then back to work for 2 weeks and then I retire. Used Oxy and Dilaudin for 3 days, then told the Dr to stop them!

Things I have learned:

1. I have an MS in Biology and extensive First Aid Training=Once the Drs learn that (don't be arrogant about it!), they will involve you more!

2. Use of NSAIDS interferes with bone-regrowth. Use Tylenol instead of Advil (I am using about 1800 units of Tylenol per day==more if called for (BUT I am a big guy!)

3. Muscles (such as thigh muscles) can atrophy VERY fast. I pushed rehab and did very well but my thigh muscles lost mass in 2 weeks).

4. Much info on the 'Net is bogus==get second opinions and you and your doc make the decision together.

5. Hospital and rehab food sucks!

Good luck! We just found out I have Osteopenia (similar to Osteoporosis but not as bad!)

:eek:BearBio, I think you should start watching your step when up and about.... (Hope you heal up well, and soon, and that your, uh, mishaps are behind you...:))

i guess someone should say it popular or not so here goes . the most effective pain medication i have ever used is marijuana . the local athorities and most employers unfortunately do not accept that openion therefore it eliminates that option for most folks who have to work for a living . which includes me . what say y'all.

I believe massage works wonders on painful areas. I can tell you from experience massaging the muscles and tissue all around the knee got me off crutches and sleepless nights from knee pain. I actually could put my socks on for a change. Having knee pain will show you your arms are just to short. Deep massaging the area most painful took the pain away. I did the same thing with foot pain. I have had no knee surgery or replacement and I don't have the pain anymore either.
Along with massaging I did on and off ice cold compresses. Also a really good chiropractor can do wonders alleviating pain. I wasn't a believer till I experienced that also.

I guess I should have put in more detail. I had vascular surgery to both my lower legs. My legs swell up every day considerably creating pain, heat and itching. The only pain medication I'm on is Gabapentin 300mg 3 times a day and it isn't very helpful. I have an appointment with a pain specialist organization on Monday and perhaps they'll come up with something. This has been going on 24/7 for over a month!

My life is a daily exercise in pain management. I had never heard of Conolidine until you mentioned it so I started surfing and now I'm curious enough to ask my PCP about it.

I'm not a Doctor or anything else other than an anonymous poster but it sounds like you're having problems with inflammation from your body's immune system trying to heal itself after surgery and the pain heat, swelling and itching are a result.

Have you followed up with your vascular surgeon? What does he/she say? Are the post-surgery side effects you're happening normal or is this the new normal?

Again, I'm not a Doc, but maybe if you get the inflammation under control, the pain, heat, swelling may go away or at least be reduced.

The pain management people should be able to help....

If you go into PubMed (NIH linked database which is freely accessible) and enter 30644434 when asked for the PMID, you will find a 2019 paper from Australian universities which gives basic information on the agent. Bear in mind that this is from a peer-reviewed article in Science Advances but it is not from any clinical trial, This is the type of information that is needed before any type of clinical trial but the basic scientific information is present. Do not buy anything from the web as you have absolutely no idea of what is or is not in the bottle that you receive in exchange for significant amounts of cash! Well over 90% of ads that you see touting "miracle cures" are pure BS looking for suckers! Dave_n

My wife is a board certified physiatrist. Regrettably her career ended early due to non Hodgkin’s lymphoma. However, she is quite knowledgeable and I mentioned your situation. She said that Arnica may help. You can find it on the internet, essentially you let several small pills dissolve under your tongue. Her other suggestion is acupuncture. She studied acupuncture because it is an alternative to narcotics for treating pain. It also can treat other issues. She said that when she studied acupuncture, it was not readily accepted by the medical community within the US, because many did not understand why it worked, so they therefore dismissed it as a valid treatment. My wife’s research indicated that acupunture was effective in treating disorders/ pain in roughly 75% of the cases it was used. She was not fixated on why or how it worked; rather the 75% success rate. Thus her recommendation is that you consult a certified acupuncturist for an opinion.

I want to thank everyone for the information presented here but I've decided to do nothing more until I see the pain specialists on Monday morning. I'll let you know what they said.

I take Gabapentin 1600mg when I get up for diabetic neuropathy kinda sorta helps. Then 1200mg gabapentin before I go to bed. My foot doc tells me that in most cases the max you can take is 3600mg a day. But she has patients that take considerably more. Plus I have osteio arthritus getting out of a chair takes some doing.Sorta launch yourself up and out. Frank

I've never heard of Conolidine, but I suffer from Sciatica, and have tried everything ( even Meloxicam ) perscribed by Drs. Then a friend recommended over-the-counter Naproxen Sodium. I've had really good results with it. Check it out on WebMD. Good luck.:)

I asked my main doctor about Tylenol. He said I could handle it (I am a BIG guy) and he gave me guidelines to limit myself. Also, other NSAIDS interfere with bone growth==two orthopedists told me that.

End of the month, I will see my main provider and we'll be starting treatment for osteopenia to increase bone density. We were clued in by the extreme number of breaks in such a short time (very few breaks before age 60).

Very wise of the OP to check with his own physician before doing anything!
