Default Ice Cream

Today is National Ice Cream Day.

Some observations:

1: I've never had any bad ice cream.

2: hand cranked was always worth the wait.

3: I can't remember the last time I had "brain freeze".

How appropriate that it falls on a Sundae.

To mark the day, my son contemplating the largest dish of ice cream I've ever seen served.

I just celebrated my 60th birthday, it was a good excuse to go for ice cream. My wife and I both got a waffle bowl and three scoops. I had Praline, Butter Pecan and Pistachio. Her birthday is next month and it will be out for ice cream we go. It will be four scoops next time and two happy 60 year old kids.

It's damn cruel we can't survive on ice cream alone.

As a teenager I worked as a soda jerk at Doumar's Cones and Barbecue in Norfolk, VA. At the time Doumar's was owned by Al and Vic Doumar, nephews of Abe Doumar, who, according to family history, invented the ice cream cone at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904.

History | Doumar's

There are, of course, other accounts of the invention of the ice cream cone, so no way to know for sure who can claim the title.

My personal favorite is the Amaretto/cheesecake ice cream that is made in the store at Beth Maries in Denton, Tx. It doesn't get any better!

Brings to mind Walt Kelly’s Pogo strip where Porky is yelling “I scream for their heads!,” and Pogo — or was it maybe Albert or Churchy? — muses, “Ice cream for our heads?”

Stopped on a trip last year in a small town ice cream shop which had maple-bacon-bourbon ice cream. Heaven in a spoon.

I saw my wife for the first time, she was a server at an Islay's parlor (the last one in Columbus) in the summer of 1974.

They let the employees eat all the ice cream they want! Normally the kids get sick of it in a few days. NOT Diane, her self control is unbelievable! She would have ONE SMALL SCOOP a day for the 2 1/2 years she worked there part time!

Wink Toft's Dairy Sandusky, Ohio

If you ever get near Sandusky, Ohio you have to try Toft's Dairy ice cream parlor...UNBELIEVABLE selection of flavors and VERY GENEROUS servings for the price...well worth the trip...

That's the kind of ice cream I would use to make 2 ingredient bread.

Mix 1 cup of softened ice cream and 3/4 cup self-rising flour. Pour into a greased loaf pan and bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes.

Serve to a grateful world.

The weirdest ice cream I ever had was black licorice ice cream.
I had it at a local county fair. Made by Hershey’s. Not the candy company.

I have had maple ice cream with fried goetta sprinkles at Goettafest.

Sauerkraut ice cream at the Waynesville Sauerkraut festival.

A Belgian wheat beer float with orange sherbet at our Oktoberfest.

All were better than I anticipated although the float was like a Mentos/Coke experiment. My stein runneth over.

I like most all ice cream but last evening my wife insisted we try the new Cold Stone Creamery that recently opened. Very ordinary. I ordered a chocolate sundae - they don't make them. Most of what they had were gimmick candy concoctions catering to kids. I went with a vanilla waffle cone and the cone was burnt tasting and the ice cream was almost as good as Bryer's. If they make it 6 months I'll be surprised.

Lots of people think that "BR" 31 flavore is good..........
and it is but here in Reno and Virginia City, another tourist trap,
there are now custom made Ice Cream parlors that make I/C
with custom spices, fruits, creams and toppings that will blow you away.

I will buy store bought for a root beer float..............
but for enjoyment I like to splurge now and then for a "Custom".

Got Spumoni ?

There used to be a Mexican restaurant here that served fried ice cream. Sounded weird, so we had to try it.

Heaven on a plate.

It was a LARGE scoop of vanilla Blue Bell rolled in corn flakes and deep fried for a few seconds to crisp the cornflakes. They served it in a sopaipilla bowl sprinkled with cinnamon sugar and drizzled with chocolate and caramel sauce. Oh my.

Sadly, they are no longer in business, and I've never found its equal anywhere else. There was one place that served what they called fried ice cream, but it was just a sort of ice cream burrito. Not nearly as delicious.

HMMM Today was national ice cream day. I had two different flavor pints of Halo ice cream. Only 280 calories per pint so I had two pints today.

A float made with good vanilla bean ice cream and Boylan's Black Cherry Soda is nice. May replace the root beer float as my favorite.

I grew up in Cincinnati and I dearly love United Dairy Farmers (UDF) ice cream. Now when I visit my family I bring a cooler full home. Black Walnut and Dutch Chocolate Almond and now discontinued Spumoni are my favs.

They had a radio commercial that touted “no dairy air” in their ice cream. LOL It is a very hard pack ice cream.

Truckin, I have a UDF 6 blocks from my house and the plant is 1 1/2 miles away. I set my calendar for their holiday release of eggnog.

We have a new place in town , Culvers . It's from Wisconsin , so you know it's good . They don't have ice cream , they have frozen custard . Now being a southerner , born & bred , I had no idea what frozen custard is . But I became an extremely fast learner . They make it in store , and mix it up . I'm getting to where I go 1-2 times a week . They have a party platter , 4 pints for the price of 3 . I get 4 different kinds , last night was snickers swirl . If you ever see one , STOP . Their butter burgers are good also .

Check your mail for coupons.
There’s one 2 miles away. Try the concrete mixer next time.

Re: Observations. Some observations ...

1. Bad ice cream. Maybe. Can't remember.

2. Hand cranked ice cream. Agree. Wonderful. And that's if someone making it hasn't got any idea of what they are doing!

3. Brain freeze. Never had it. For sure never had it. Never had sufficient brains to be susceptible to brain freeze!

PS . . .
Wal-Mart is currently pricing Bryers Ice Cream at $2.89/carton. Think about it! Less than $12.00 for four cartons! I just spent the last three hours push cutting the yard. I have eaten nothing today but some Vanilla Wafers w/ peanut butter and a glass of milk. So ... to night supper will consist of Bryers Vanilla Ice Cream! Cool baby! Cool! Sincerely. bruce.
