I replaced the ABS control module on my son's truck today. The instructions said to disconnect the battery. When I reconnected the battery, the gas gauge was pointing straight doen and the truck will crank, but immediately shuts off.

As it will not communicate with my code scanner, I expect it is a computer issue. Anybody know how to reset the body control module if that's what will cure this problem?

Might re-check to make sure you didn't accidentally bump or unplug a harness connector or disturb a ground. The harness for the fuel pump runs near that abs module. Check fuses also.

Maybe try unplugging the ABS module and see if everything else works?
It could be possible that there might be something screwy with the software on the new module and it's causing communication issues with the other computers.

I'd disconnect the battery for 20 minutes and try again. While I make no claims to be a Pro, I have been told by some that the car takes 50 miles of driving to totally reset it's on-board computer. If that doesn't work, I'd check the work you just finished.

Didn't work. I'll recheck to make sure I didn't unplug anything this evening.

If all wiring and procedures check out - I'd exchange the ABS control module for another one. Could be defective or could be causing a short - especially if manufactured in China.

It was a remanufactured unit from ebay. Could be the problem. Was a pain to replace. I did replace the rusty, stripped out screws, so I shouldn't have to pull the ABS motor to replace it next time.

If it is bad, do you think I could just unplug it and the truck would run?

There is a sensor on the ignition assembly. When you turn the key, the ignition cylinder rotates and a magnet passes by the sensor. If the BCM does not recognize the magnet, the truck will start but not run because the BCM did not send power to the fuel pump.

Turn the key on. Leave it on for ten minutes. The security light should go off. When it does you have one minute to turn the ignition on again. Leave it on again for another ten minutes. Repeat the process one more time for a total of thirty minutes. Let the truck sit for a minute and then try to start again.

O.k. I can unplug the replacement abs control module and the truck runs fine. Plug it back up and it doesn't. Is there a way to sync the module with my truck, or is the new module bad?

The security light also flashes with the new ABS module plugged in.

Not sure but I think you may need to get the dealer or repair shop involved.

The BCM may need to be reflashed. Which means it needs to be erased in order to communicate with components it controls.

A diagnostic scan tool is required.

I have a diagnostic scan tool and it won’t communicate with the truck when the module is plugged in. Maybe mine isn’t good enough for this job. I figure the rebuilt module I bought is bad. Don’t really know.

Thanks to everyone for the help! Collectively, the members of this forum know just about everything and are kind enough to share their wisdom.

New or even reman electrical parts often are defective. I don't like using reman electrical parts simply because the defect rate seems to be high. I had two defective reman alternators back to back before I got a good one.
What is the warranty on the part from EBAY seller?

I think he'll make good on it.

I assumed the rebuilt one would have been tested, but things can happen. I've had good luck with this sort of thing in the past. I guess I'm due for a problem.
