I disagree. Had the Germans stopped their wildly successful eastern expansion with the Baltic states, and a line down through Minsk, Kiev, and Odessa, inclusive, they could have held out against eventual Soviet counter attacks.
Barbarossa didn't have finite goals. With their outrageous initial success, it didn't occur to them to stop. Til they went too far.

Harsh conditions make tough people. The fact that the Finns are made of steel doesn't surprise me. The fact that it did surprise the Soviets baffles me.

Rifles of the white death,
Where 4,000 Russians vs 32 Finnish soldiers and the 3,600 Russians retreated. The Russians thought Finland was going to be a push over. When hitler seen that Russia was having a hard time defeating the Finns that’s why the Germans invaded Russia. The captured Russian Morin’s were reworked and shimmed till they shot 1” moa.

The second World war was a lot closer proposition than we like to remember today. The Finns were tough. One of the few nationalities integrated into elite German units. The Finnish battle reports make interesting reading.

If I’m correct didn’t the Russians win the winter war and got the chunk of Finnish land for access to another sea port that they wanted?

Yes, they pushed the boundary 30 miles or so farther west from Leningrad, seized Finland's outlet to the Arctic Ocean. When he saw the new map one Soviet general said:"We have won enough ground to bury our dead."

The Finns salvaged Russian shipwrecks that contained Mosin-Nagant riffles. Many were stripped and the receivers repurposed for Finn Mosins.
I have a Finn Mosin with the barrel dated 1943, but the receiver is dated 1898. The receiver is badly pitted and reblued.
My Mosin Model 39 (a total Finn manufacture) is the most accurate rifle I own.
While most Russian Mosins have good rifling in pitted, fouled barrels, all my Finns have shiny perfect bores.

I'd be very surprised if the receiver wasn't Russian. I think the Finns just got more thorough at scrubbing the Russian marks by the time they started M39 production.

Independence Day (Finland - Wikipedia)
Two candles on the window have a long tradition in Finland. Candles tell of patriotism
"It is traditional for Finnish families to light two candles in each window of their home in the evening. This custom dates to the 1920s; but even earlier, candles had been placed in Finnish windows on poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg's birthday as a silent protest against Russian oppression. A popular legend has it that two candles were used as a sign to inform young Finnish men on their way to Sweden and Germany to become jägers that the house was ready to offer shelter and keep them hidden from the Russians"

30.11.1939 Russia wanted to take over the whole of Finland, but we did not give up
Russia tried 22.6.1941 a second time, but that too remained an attempt.

Finland may be the next target this time too. Another big prize that is non-NATO.

Old 1939 Finnish saying.

Reminds me of the visit Kaiser Wilhem II made to Switzerland around 1910. He was obsessed with all things military, so the Swiss put on a very impressive demonstration of their soldiers' shooting skills.
KW turned to the officer in charge and said something like, "Well now; you have only 100,000 soldiers. What if I were to invade with 1 million soldiers?" Without missing a beat, the officer replied, "We would each shoot 10 times and then go home."

Recent M-39 purchase from GB, dates to 1943 SK.Y on receiver.
These are very long and heavy rifles.

About 6 years ago I sold a Finn M28. Perfect stock (probably a replacement) but the action and barrel had a lot of "patina", and had, as I remember, three different SNs, two of which were lined out. It had the Civil Guard "SY" stamp on the front receiver ring. It also had a Hammerli barrel. A guy drove all the way from Houston to buy it, and he was really happy to get it. He didn't even attempt to bargain. I think I got $400 for it, but I don't remember the exact price.

In the morning at 09:00 there was a wreath-laying at the monument to the Winter War. The Finnish Ministry of Defense is behind it.

The brave Fins gave the Ukrainians a good example to duplicate.
So far, so good.

Now Ukraine is trying the same.

The U.S. Marine Corps intelligence groups have been introduced with Finnish boat equipmen in Syndalen during the joint exercise Amphibious Training Event 1 with the Finnish Navy.
We practice cooperation in Finnish coastal conditions, where it is important to understand the special features of the Finnish Navy's equipment and the environment. In the training session, The US soldiers were told for example about the characteristics of the Finnish boats and practices onboard them.
This kind of education aims to make sure that our partner’s troops could be transported from one place to another onboard Finnish boats. In this way, we develop our ability to plan joint FIN-US Marine operations to ensure the security of the Baltic Sea. #readiness #strongertogether #navyfi

It was good to see the signing today.
You've a beautiful country, but I don't envy anyone doing military training near your many lakes during mosquito season. Brutal!

Was reading a story that reminded me of this thread. It's about a Finnish-American woman from Dallas Texas that left her studies at Columbia University at the beginning of Russia's Ukraine invasion, to fight for Ukraine. Her mother hates the idea, but her Finnish father told her "Go kill some Russkies".

A friend of mine in Vancouver BC is a professional choral singer with the Vancouver Chamber Choir, conducted by a Finn, Kari Turunen, who is taking the choir to Finland this summer. Paul is really looking forward to it. Hopefully "events" over there don't make it too dangerous to go- or to get back
