How much does that cost?? I just timed a full 5 minute commercial for the ASPCA with tons of images of pathetic, starving, sick, or maimed animals. Of course they're begging for money. These commercials come on at almost every commercial break. The cost must be insane, and they're asking for money? With that kind of advertising budget I figure they don't need more money. Sorry, rant over.

This is interesting, very interesting:

There are more Polar Bears now than 60 years ago by far. Just commie claptrap.

My wife just swoons over the mama polar bear and her two little cubs, you can adopt one you know.

My usual line is you ever see what a polar bear does to a baby seal honey?

Ironically, that same ASPCA commercial came on as I was reading the OP's post. Mrs. swsig hates it as much as the OP does, and was fussing at me to turn it off. I have developed the ability to completely tune out commercials, so I hadn't even noticed it was on. And for some reason, responding by telling her she was interrupting my Forum reading, only made things worse. Fortunately, I was able to quickly turn to the Dr. Pimple Popper program. Watching her remove oozing and gushing skin growths sure beats watching suffering animals.

As to commercial length, out of curiosity a few days ago, I timed them for the last hour of "My 600-lb Life", and discovered that the total commercial time was 30 minutes. My conclusion: DVR is your friend.

Tugging on the heart strings is an effective form of advertising. The charity will receive more in donations than the cost of the ads.

I timed all the ads in a one hour program several years ago and there are nearly 20 minutes of ads in a one hour program. I can remember well one of the big selling points for cable companies as no ads.. What a joke! or should I say LIE.

Well to me it appears that many of the heart wrenching send money commercials either long or short are probably "public service", free or at a very reduced price.

The Smithsonian channel seem to specialize in those type. Nat Geo does a lot also. Course some of those are wounded warrior types and from what I have seen in the past the directors/officers putting out many of those things garner the lions share of the money sent in.

Also many of the cable channels at around the 1/2 hour point on a hour show seem to have a 5 minute break time and if you do not get a very long commercial you get 8 or more 30 second ones.
