We (Mrs. Taylor & I) came home from accountant office a couple hours ago. The stimulus card almost covered the check I had to write to the U.S. Treasury Dept. Then, to add insult to injury, we had to sit in the car and wait for another protest march. I have so much to say; so many opinions. I'll not say anything out of respect for everyone on this forum. You guys & gals are a wealth of information and I don't want to lose my privilege to ask questions and look at all your beautiful guns.

Thanks for letting me vent.

Consider yourself lucky. We underpaid around $5k this year - and our stimulus check was a whopping $795.
The more you make, the more they take, and the less you get.

Ain’t that the truth....had to poney up an extra couple of grand and to add insult to injury.....I never got a stimulus check......oh well.

I had to write a check for a little over $5,500. That's on top of all my withholding. Stimulus check? Mine was a whopping $122.55. I haven't cashed it yet...

However, lest this sound like I'm complaining; I still have a job.

One of my IRA providers failed to with hold federal and state taxes for my 2019 distribution. Rather than deal with the bozos, I paid the Treasury an estimate back in January. I filed in April and am due $2700. refund...no money yet. Apparently IRS is focused only on stimulus checks. I won't waste my effort explaining tax refunds are also stimulating!!

I just got my bill for school taxes, and I never had any kids.

It is my opinion that with holding is like the devil convincing mankind he doesn't exist. When asked about how much they make, the average person quotes their take home pay ! Wrong ! They made from 20 - 50% more than that. They need to understand that some bureaucrat reached in their pocket and took the rest. It is my belief that if people got the money then had to pay it to the city, state and feds, more people would be up in arms about it. I will say paying a lot in taxes is a good problem to have, even though it sucks!

But But But it your FAIR Share.

If you make more $$ you need to pay a higher percentage because it's FAIR. I never understood the logic, if it's so good how about doing the same thin with consumer goods.
Joe; you make a good dollar therefore you need to pay 1.5 times the sticker value of that car so we can sell one to Harry making minimum wage for half price. It's FAIR you know


Why not just say the first x number of dollars is tax exempt than anything over that is taxed at X %.

I'm not even going to talk about income tax, but I went to the county treasurer today and renewed my license plate for my truck. Now, it's a nice truck but I know that many (most?) states charge a fairly nominal fee to register a vehicle. My 2019 Chevy Duramax 1 ton was $891. Wyoming claims not to have an income tax. I say nonsense. We just call it a "vehicle registration fee!"

in April properly. With many
incomes you've got to factor
how much you actually owe and
begin quarterly payments following
April--June, September and
December.

And you need to start doing itemized
deductions on your own to get
maximum benefits for yourself.

Deductions during payouts often
don't cover all one owes. You might
have to adjust deductions upward
to cover what you owe based on
the tax tables/calculations (hence
the quarterly calculations or you
face penalties).

Everything is relative.

While living in South Florida my wife and I paid less than $40 for our yearly car registration. Here in Nevada, it's $500 a year!

But.....

Florida has toll roads everywhere, more miles (719) than any other state in the country. Nevada has zero tolls.

For someone in Florida who has to drive a reasonable amount to go to work, drive the kids back and forth for school, run errands, etc., I can see $100 a month toll bill easily. And $200-$300 a month is not out of the question if you do a lot of driving.

So do the math. In Nevada it's basically a flat fee of $500 a year. For Florida, $40 plus $1,000-$2,000 a year in tolls.

Then factor in property taxes in Las Vegas are less than we were paying in Miami, we can't complain too much.

It takes "X" amount of dollars to run a state.
They are going to get it under one name or another.

I made a similar comment in a pub in England during a debate about Mrs Thatcher's so-called "Poll Tax". The "oh ****" looks were priceless, but I was a little concerned that bothering certain drunks with facts might lead to a violent close to the evening.

True. The good thing about income and auto taxes is that they apply to pretty nearly everyone. Unlike our state where property taxes are through the roof, and those who don't own a home don't pay. I know, I know, they pay it in their rent - sorta. Unless they are in low income housing. It's still the property owners who pay through the nose.

I feel your pain, Jeff. We too are writing checks to the state and federal government today giving back almost all of the stimulus money we received. Easy come, easy go.

There's talk of a second round of stimulus checks. If we get one, we'll sock it away in expectation of next year's tax bill, I guess.

Life's still good, though. And we are blessed, for sure.

Yes, you're right. Next year's tax filing is going to be an interesting litmus test for me (us), as I retired beginning April 1st. There will be my regular earnings thru March, then 2 pensions and Soc. Sec. If I get off my butt and figure out my taxes in January, or asap when I have all the numbers, I'll have a chance to make any deduction changes early enough that I don't have the problem when I file my 2021 taxes. I'll take this problem over having to wake up and go to work every day, and, also, not having to worry about getting called out at all hours between 3:30 PM to 7:00 AM. I can also thank God every day that my health is holding out so that I may enjoy life and I was even able to maintain a living wage all my life. It's a beautiful day in Pittsburgh today...I think I'm going to go shoot some defenseless pieces of paper this morning! I bore-sighted a couple handguns a few days ago. I'll see if I can make some final adjustments. Good day all!

The BIGGEST scam by far is the automatic withholding done by the employer. Totally painless and after a while you get used to it and taxes fade into the background and are forgotten as you never had the money anyway.
Counter that with someone in my situation. Every time I take a draw from the office I have to pay 6% to the state, 25% fed tax and 15% to social security. Y'all do the math. That pretty much drives home THAT point

I decided long ago that if I figure out my tax liability during the year and pay it as I go, I won't have much to either pay or get back. When yo are on pension ans Social Security and don't take but the required minimum from the IRA it is pretty easy to get close. We did get a stimulus check, but we didn't need it so we divided it up between three of our grandchildren who were furlowed from their jobs.

For years I used to run to the mail box on April 16th, like a kid at Christmas, expecting the box to be full of thank you cards from all of my fellow citizens that I support...the disappointment became unbearable so I no longer do it.

I retired in June of last year. With severance, my w2 was pretty healthy. Thought I'd get killed on taxes, I did pay a lot, but with what had been withheld, I got a couple grand back. This year, with nothing but social security and some unemployment, I may be one of those who pays little or no income tax this year...and because of last year's income, we did not get a stimulus check, even though our only income right now is social security.

True. Last year was my first full year of semi-retirement and drawing my pension in addition to working part time. We didn't set up my withholding correctly. We won't make that mistake again this year.

I have increasingly become a believer in a flat tax. Above the poverty line, tax everyone’s income from any source — no tax dodges — at a flat rate of 10 ~ 20%.

I (and many others) think most tax payers would pay less than they do now, the very rich would pay more than the do now, and government would collect more in tax revenue.

I’ll trade you, that license fee for Minnesota income tax.

Yes, because 90% of the population is so bad at budgeting that the prisons would be overflowing with tax cheats.

The tax codes over the decades and decades

Those of us that think taxes are too high should take a look at tax rates back in 50's and early 60's. They were much higher. The trade-off was the roads weren't all potholes and the bridges weren't falling down and teachers didn't have to pay for their own classroom supplies.

If i hadn't been reading this forum today, would have forgotten all about the taxes. Getting almost $3000 back, mostly from feds because didn't declare until tax time. Am content to live in my hovel, and don't pay much for property tax.

My tax bill this year was $8500! I've never owed money to the tax office in my life. I've always got some money back off them. It seems that my old Department never took enough tax out when they medically retired me.

This year ... owed 2K. Okay. I made more. I pay more. Cool. Back in the dark ages I very well remember praying to God that I might one day pay taxes on $25K/yr. Of course that was a while ago. Now I make a lot more than what I prayed for years ago. And, I pay more. It really is fine with me. I pay school tax on two houses. Cool. Who wants to live in a community where everyone is ignorant. No company locates its operations in a area where the schools are bad, where there are no colleges, universities, technical schools, etc. Such places have no future. Taxes are the cost of living in a community worth living in. JMHO. Sincerely. bruce.

I had the accountant send in extensions...

I paid my taxes in March and had a good sized refund coming. Since I filed a paper return, it was subsequently ignored and I haven't seen a dime yet.

I mailed a paper return with a check.
That check cleared faster than are speeding bullet!
Sounds like you got hung up in the Rebate Mess.

I cannot remember the last time I got a “return”. Craziest concept ever. Over paying taxes and letting the government use your money for free for a year, then act like it is Christmas when they give it back to you.
I comfort myself every year knowing that my hard work and a portion of the resulting taxes is allowing somebody else to live without working. America is truly a wonderful place.

When the tax allowances were dramatically increased I could not believe how many at work whined that there was no point in itemizing deductions and that they would no longer be guaranteed to get money back. Pointing out that the IRS is a tax collection service, not a government managed savings plan, just made many of them grumpy for some reason.

I took money out of my IRA last year and didn't pay any taxes on it. I was sweating bullets that I would have to pay this year. Had my taxes done last Friday and lo and behold, I didn't owe anything!
