"New York Mets legend Tom Seaver, who earned the nickname "Tom Terrific" during a 20-year career that saw him win 311 games and three Cy Young awards, has died at age 75, his family said in a statement."

"Seaver, regarded as the greatest Met of all-time, had a 2.86 earned-run average and struck out 3,640 batters over a career that spanned from 1967 to 1986. He earned 12 All-Star selections, led the National League in wins and ERA three times apiece, and strikeouts five times. Elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1992, Seaver was on 98.8 percent of ballots, which was the highest voting percentage ever received at the time."

Back when baseball was fun to watch. He certainly was one of the greats.

I'm not a sports fan but went to some home games with friends and saw him pitch. I remember the local euphoria in 1969 among my fellow NY'ers, when Tom led the Mets to the championship, and Namath led the Jets to the top.
An added dimension to the hometown connection was Mets player Al Weis lived on my block while he was with the team in that era.

Rest in peace George Thomas Seaver.

Any time I see the name Tom Seaver, I think of the picture of the decimated field in the '69 World Series where the fans tore up clumps of turf for souvenirs.

Growing up in NY during his era, he was for sure a favorite!

I probably still have a baseball card or two of his hidden away someplace.

He used to live in the area I live now, maybe a mile away. Lots of the local places (pizza, deli types) had his picture and autograph near the cash register with other local celebs. I was told he was very personable and friendly.

Apparently his dementia was quite bad. They had an event at the stadium a few years back and he couldn't participate other than making an appearance.

I read hes a Marine, left the Corps and went in to baseball.

RIP, sir

Yup - just saw the morning papers. My Wife use to Baby-sit for a bunch of the Mets and met him a few times. I was friends with Bud Harrelson (Mets Mgr.) back in the 1980's and 90's but when I ran into him and his ex Wife last year, I was saddened to see that he has been stricken with Alzheimer's.

Sad. Read he had Lewy Body Dementia. Kind of weird in that I had never heard of that until yesterday when I read an article that said Robin Williams had the same disease. And now again reading about TomS. Sort of like Parkinson's. And I did read he served in the Unites States Marine Corps.
Semper Fi!

My mother died from Lewy Body Dementia.

It's a horrible disease.

As with my mother I'm glad his suffering is over.
