New iPad
My sister gave me my current iPad at the end of 2016 when I was getting ready to have cancer surgery. It had been my niece's, but she got a new one. I never thought I would use it, but now I realize I can't do without one. It is a Gen. 3 and has about a 10 inch screen. It's capacity is only 12.5 GB, and the latest version it will update is 9.3.5 and most apps no longer support this version. I was kinda hoping I would get another "hand me down" iPad, but no such luck.
So, it is time for me to get another one. I don't want to spend a lot. I definitely need one at least this screen size. What advice do you folks have for me?
Larry

I’m not sure of current pricing, but when I needed a new one the cheapest was an iPad mini II which is a little smaller, but I like that. 64 mb was a little under $400,I think

Larry I have iPad Pro with the smart keyboard. This is probably far more than you need but it has eliminated the need for both a desktop at the office and a laptop. It does everything I need in one machine.

I use an iPad pretty much exclusively. Mine's now about three years old, but working well. I don't think most of us need the latest and the greatest.
I bought my wife a refurbished, like new iPhone 8 — that's four generations old now — a few months ago at a good price from Backmarket You could check 'em out for refurbished iPads.

I bought my first iPad a few months ago: Walmart offered better prices than amazon.
You don’t need the coolest like the iPad Pro or iPad Air, nor do you need a ton of memory. I assume you’re using a WiFi connection.
You might look for refurbished iPads : they’re quite reliable, just not brand new.

For the last three years before I recently retired I researched and implemented technology for special ed students. iPads were the most common product we used as apps and iPads in general were very good for special needs.
The info above is all good. Refurbished can be a good way to go. I also did not find that the 128 GB memory was necessary. I had my office iPad and had more apps on it than you can imagine. I told companies that I provided assistive technology to over 3,000 students not to mention parents and teachers and they were always willing to give me their apps for free. I never ran out of memory even in that case.
I will say though that the extra memory was nice with the new one I had last school year. The pro is too much, maybe the air as well for most people. The 8th Gen 32 or 128 GB should do all you would want to do.
One thing I did find is some apps were coming out with voice features that had to be on new iPads, some only on the Pro. I have no idea of what you will be running but I was working with some very interesting stuff for communication.
In this day and age of technology, what is great today might not handle things in the future, just depends on what you want to do. What are your needs is where I would start.

If you dare stray away from the "I" you can get a really nice Samsung 10" 128 GB with 3 GB of ram for under $200.
I bought one in October and love it. I put a extra 128GB SD card in it, and have 69 movies, a few hundred songs, and a few books on it.
I've always used Android, so I don't know if "I" stuff is better or not.

I have a first generation iPad mini. I think the current mini is the same size as mine. I find the screen way too small, I don't recommend it. Text is micro-sized and hard to read without zooming in.

Watch for Black Friday and Christmas specials in the few weeks. Last year I bought a new Gen 7 10.2" iPad for $249. Apple also offers late-model refurbed models with new parts and full warranty.

I have a Samsung pad that I use for vacation to watch a movie on the plane but that's about all. I have two small, thin HP laptops that are slightly bigger than a tablet and much easier to type on with my fat fingers. I use them for my construction business and everything else and they were each a little over $300 each and they are both set up with identical software. I use Syncware to wirelessly send all files from my main laptop to my backup laptop so if it's ever lost, stolen, broken, or has a virus I simply work on the other laptop until it's fixed. Same thing with updates I'm never waiting, I simply work on the other laptop until updates are complete.

Thank you all for the very good information. I will definitely keep my eyes open for Black Friday or Christmas sales. If you folks see one, please alert me to it. Thanks.
