Hungry Hungry Hippos
So many questions.
Why gun do you use to hunt Hippos?
How do you hunt them-decoys or pass shooting-night or day-on water or on land?
Is is hippopotamuses or hippopotami?
How do you sterilize these suckers without making then mad?
How do you cook them?
What do they taste like?
Pablo Escobar'''s hippos have invaded Colombia'''s waterways and need to be culled, study says

According to this page, the taste is "It is my personal opinion that hippo meat is one of the finest of game foods … The taste is mild, less than lamb and more than beef, slightly more marbled than usual venison. It tastes exactly like, well, hippo.”

Read Capsticks description of the sporting method to shoot hippos. Basically he recommends using a big bore rifle, coming up as close as possible in shallow water until the herd bull charges you at about 25-40 yards. Then as it approaches like a freight train with its mouth gaping open and those 4 huge tusks showing, carefully shoot it right in the adenoids and break its spine before it reaches you. Sounds like fun. Don't miss.

Whenever friends gathered and we played, we carefully removed the chomping hippo heads. This left each player with a neck and a hole in the board. It became four-way battle hockey. Each swipe with a hippo neck (well timed) would rocket a marble in a random direction at high speed.
The goal was to get as many in to other players’ ummmm hole
The only pitfall in game play was that keeping your hippo neck extended meant your goal could never be breached, so it was half honor system and half screaming at the cheater who was blocking his own hole.
Fun times!

I wonder if their leather would make a serviceable pair of boots.
I once had a pair of elephant hide boots. Had them resoled two or three times. I finally got tired of looking at them. The uppers still looked like new.

When walking your hippo in public are you required to keep them on a leash and pick up after them?

Years ago the Fish and Game in Montana was holding public meetings about coyote control. Poison, shooting from airplanes and trapping were all discussed, when a woman stood up and asked why they didn't just sterilize them all. One old crusty rancher stood up and said,"Lady they are eating our sheep and calves not (having sex with) them to death."

Reminds me of a time years ago when someone released crocodiles along the coast during abalone spawning season. Scientists were baffled when the hybrid crockabalones started showing up.

40yrs ago there was a Tony Llama store in the area. I must have bought 20 pairs there, most were seconds. The only ones I have left are the Elephant.

All joking aside; the hippopotamus is the world most dangerous and deadliest land mammal. According to some source they kill on average 500 people per year in Africa. Other source site they kill as many as 3000 people annually.
As an invasive species they are likely to become a real problem in South and Central America.
So maybe we need to start having a gun and cartridge for hippo protection thread. I'm wanting something bigger than a handgun, much bigger.
I think my Ruger M77 Hawkeye African 9.3x62mm with a Norma 275 grain solids might be about the minimum when hiking in Hippo territory.

"In 1910 an extraordinary conversation took place at the House of Representatives, when Congressman Robert F. Broussard of Louisiana opened up discussion of H.R. 23261, or to give it a more familiar title, the “Hippo Bill.”
The bill was designed to address a make or break issue for the future of America, namely the “Meat Question.” With a burgeoning population, the U.S. had eaten its way through the national beef supply.
The days of the cow seemed to be numbered, and hippopotami were being eyed as the next item on the menu.
There was a slight problem, however, in that they weren’t on the same continent as hungry Americans."
When hippos nearly saved America
The Hippos almost saved America..
To bad it did not come to be- watching Swamp People on TV catching Hippos would have been great.
And who knows how tasty Hippo would be when the Cajuns cooked um'?

Surely the ladies in Franklin or St. Martinsville have a recipe for HippoGumbo???? If you can make gumbo with mud ducks,, Hippo’s shouldn’t be a problem.

Only 275 grain bullets? I think I would want my 45-70 Marlin with 500 grain solids.
