Headed to San Diego and was wondering what to check out when we are there?
I know we are going to the ZOO and Sea World.
Any good sea food restaurants you would suggest? And of course any gun shops close? And what to avoid? Thanks alot!

I'd want to see tha Pacific-then I would want to go to Tijuana to buy some cheap straw hats, then I would want to go see a base-a-ball game, then I would be ready to go home.

Hi gunnutt44

Wild Animal Park, about 25 miles north of the city is worth a visit. Scripps Aquarium, Point Loma Cabrillo Monument for a wonderful panoramic view of the harbor, North Island, and the submarine base. Balboa Park (next to the Zoo), the Automobile Museum, The Midway aircraft carrier museum, the Star of India classic sailing ship, Old Town, and Seaport Village.

The only worthwhile gunshops are Southern California Guns on Kearny Mesa, and another in El Cajon.

When you see the double aerodrome hangers on North Island, wave "hi!" to my old haunts.

Hey, gunsmith11! What was your unit on North Island? I was with HS-84.

If they are still open Krasne's gun shop downtown is worth a look. As far as restaurants: for sea food hit Point Loma Seafood on Scott street next to the sport fishing docks. Fresh and delicious in a casual outdoor/patio dining style.

The Zoo, Balboa Park (lots of museums and the Rueben Fleet Science Center/Omnimax theater), Sea World, Midway Carrier(museum) and Seaport Village are all must see's. The beaches are awesome from Imperial Beach to La Jolla. Belmont park at Mission Beach is a lot of fun with a great old roller coaster right on the water.

If Tijuana is on your list do it the easy way and take the trolley to the border and walk across. It is a lot less hassel than driving and parking and you really don't want to drive in TJ. Two of the best views in town can be had at Mr A's (5th and Laurel), and the Top of the Hyatt at Seaport Village. Both are great for a sunset cocktail (dinner at Mr A's is $$$).

The biggest problem with going to San Diego is deciding what you can live without doing/seeing as no one can do/see it all. Enjoy!

We were just there this past November for the first time. Many forum members answered the same question for me. We really enjoyed the Midway and right by that area is a ferry that takes you to Coronado Island. We walked to the Hotel del Coronado and had lunch overlooking the Pacific. Gorgeous. A very nice time. Wonderful shops in the area on the island. We brought our bathing suits, changed in the bathroom (big) and swam in the ocean (cold).

Most everything mentioned is good, except TJ. You couldn't pay me to visit TJ, I'll stay on my side of the fence.

Don't forget The National Cemetery at Rosecrans, Cabrillo Monument and Lighthouse (great views if the marine layer cooperates) and Sunset Cliffs.

When I hitchhiked to SD from Missouri for spring break in 1974,I liked Black's beach. But I was 19 then.

Last time I was there, there was a little asian restaurant over near G-Street, I believe it was. A place called Tom Lai's. Great Chinese food. Of course, the last time I was there was in 1978-79.

I do remember Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo as being quite nice, and also Sea World. Actually some fond memories of all three places.

Sunday brunch at Humphrey's on Shelter Island. Fat City also has a great Sunday brunch. The Corvette Diner in Hillcrest is a fun place to east as well. The San Diego Corvette Club rotates the Corvette on display in the middle of the restaurant on a monthly basis.

I would check out Shelter, Harbor Island amd Point Loma, as mentioned for places to eat..Red Sails Inn for sea food..Boll Wevil for hamburgers the size of UFO's..and very good..

Jump in with the tourist on the waterfront at the foot of Broadway, main street downtown..tour a russian sub..go to sea port village, all within walking distance from the ship displays..can't think of the restauarant between the USS Midway and Sea Port village but it is very good..seafood of course..Old Town for tourist view..

Gun shops are spread out and you need to know the area to find them..only about 5 shops anywhere in San Diego worth visiting..Turner's is a sporting goods shop with several locations..and two indoor ranges with some items for sale..

You need a car for sure to get around..haven't been to TJ in over 20 years..check out the flea market in the towns close to the border..no need to go over unless you are daring..be prepared for a long line upon returning..

World Famous right on the "board walk" in Pacific Beach serves up an awesome Lobster Bisque.
There is a very good aviation museum in Balboa Park, do not miss the model train museum found there also.

I forgot the Sunday Brunch at Humphrey's - the best in Town. If you are lucky my friend Lynn will be your waitress. Tell her Capt Steve sent you.

Lots of really good suggestions here.
I would also suggest the Point Loma Seafood place as it is exceptionally fresh seafood. Or the Brigantine on Shelter Island, which is also where the Red Sails is as mentioned earlier.
The Midway Museum is very good so I hear.
La Jolla is a great beach, it's where many of the 'rich folk' live. Other beaches are fine, but La Jolla is slightly better. Coronado is a very close second and they have a camping area to the south.
I personally would not go to TJ either, there's simply too much **** going on around those parts and so much in San Diego to see anyway.
There is Discount Gun on Morena Blvd, which is not too far from downtown. It has an indoor range as well. Then there is Turner's, SoCal Gun, American Shooting Range (indoor), El Cajon Gun Exchange, Duncan's Guns (smithing too) and La Mesa Fine Guns. There used to be many more, but have long since dried up. Oh, and the San Diego Police Range is right down the freeway from downtown too. They don't sell, but you can shoot there for $10 a day. Buy ammo there too.
If you want to you can contact me direct for any other information that you think you will need. I have lived here most of my life, know it pretty well and wouldn't mind helping you out at all.

Been there, done that.
Forget about a trip to TJ - it is simply not worth it.
Zoo, Sea World, USS Midway, Hotel del Coronado - I liked it, but TJ: No Way, Jose!

I second Coronado, La Jolla, the Gas Lamp District, and Balboa Park. All super cool areas. Try all the hole in the wall mexican restaurants/taquerias. There is no better mexican food in the US than in San Diego.

Old town and the zoo, Naturaal History Museum and any other museum would be great and the dirty taco stands in old town are wonderful.
