Thinking about getting a Red Dot sight for my Browning Buckmark. It would be for plinking, and to try something "different". I know you get what you pay for, but I don't want to spend a bunch of money for a sight to put on a $200 gun.

I'm considering the Tasco Red Dot Sight 38mm Tube 1x 5 MOA Dot with Weaver-Style Mount.

It's on sale at Midway for $32. I've read the reviews on Midway and it gets pretty good marks.

Anybody have any first hand experience to share?

I haven't used that particular one; I've got a BSA red dot on my HiPoint 9mm carbine that's minute-of-pie-plate to 75-100yd. I have another green dot I use on my shotgun for turkey season - the sight is great, but the damn birds won't cooperate and die.

For me, at least, the green dot is worth the tiny bit of extra money - reds wash out very quickly in bright light.

I have a the exact same Red Dot on my Browning Buckmark. I bought the mounting plate from Brownell's. Installs easy, even for kitchen table gunsmiths.
Once sighted in, and it doesn't take much time or ammo, it is incredibly accurate. I routinely dispatch vermin, both with and without legs with headshots.

I have one on my 686 and shoot bowling pins with it. Works fine, never lost zero even with some pretty warm loads.

I had a Tasco Red Dot that I purchased on sale from Midway. I traded it off, but it seemed functional and adequate. I wouldn't use one on a fighting gun, but for plinking and non life endangering hunting, one should suffice.

I'm a 1" UltraDot fan (I shoot bullseye), but there's nothing wrong with the Tascos. A friend has at least one on his bullseye pistols and likes them.

I carried one for a year in Iraq on my M-4. Never had an issue with it losing zero or malfunctioning.

Bushnell bought out a big chunk of Tasco, so what you see on the market now may be the end of the line for the Tasco brand red-dots and maybe scopes. (I don't know how much of the Tasco stuff they bought.) Any service on these is now through Bushnell.
At the prices these are selling for, they are a good value.

I put a $65 Bushnell Trophy 30m/m Red Dot on my Buckmark Camper .22 and it made it a lot more fun. I have let young kids who have never fired a handgun, hit small objects at 40 yards away and it was the thrill of their life. Trying to keep 3 magazines loaded while these kids shot was quite a chore and I think they could have gone all day long. With that being said, if I was doing it again I might check out one of the small Reflex type sights like a Doctor Optic clone or something similar.

I've had a Tasco PDP2 on my High Standard bullseye gun for quite a few years, and a Millet on my IZH35M. I prefer the Millet, which I bought for about $70 2 years ago. It is plenty bright enough for outdoor use, which can be a problem with some of them. I would love to try the Burris Fastfire, which is more like $200.

I put a BSA red dot on my Webley air rifle. It was pretty inexpensive and so far has worked out real well.
