FASTEST GUN IN HOLLYWOOD
I couldn't sleep last night so I got up around midnight and moved
from bed to my Lazy Boy and turned on the TV. There was an
old western just starting. The Last Challenge with Glenn Ford,
Angie Dickinson and Chad Everett.
Ford, a long time gunfighter, was the sheriff of the small town,
just trying to live a peaceful life. Everett was the young gunfighter
wanting to take on the old timer. Dickinson was
Ford's romance interest.
Conclusion was Ford and Everett at the bar in the saloon ready
to go. Everett started the draw, but Ford pulled his gun and fired
so fast I didn't even see it.
I found out with a little research that Glenn Ford was known as
the fastest gun in Hollywood. He could draw and fire in 0.4
seconds. No wonder I couldn't see it happening.
A pretty good old western.

Much as I like Glen Ford, he wasn't close. Read this: Who Was the Fastest Gun in Hollywood? - True West Magazine
Have read these accounts in various other publications.
Back to Glen Ford watch "The Sheepman" or "The Fastest Gun Alive" are great for tricks with a gun.

Have also read that James Arness was very quick as well. Same with Robert Fuller.
Doesn't surprise me that Sammy Davis Jr. was at the top.....Jerry Lewis however does surprise me!

James Arness was not bad, but have heard and read articles that in the opening sequence he was beaten on the draw by the bad guys. So they had to slow them down.

The above first link says Sammy Davis Jr and Jerry Lewis, but the attached link says between the two of 'em, Sammy: Curator's Corner: Sammy Davis, Jr.'s Colt Single Action Army Revolver - YouTube Link shows his Colt SA and his rig.

It takes a human being about a half second to react to anything. Bill
Jordan could draw, shoot and kill in 0.27 of a second. At 0.40 Glenn
Ford was certainly no slouch.

No he wasn't, but against the others he was slower.

I had an uncle Gary who was a self taught musician, played everything. He had a band and they toured around, never got anywhere near famous but got around the bar circuit, knew some folks, stayed busy, fed their habits, etc. I was only four years younger than Gary, we were pals growing up. I looked up to him like a big brother and had to do whatever Gary was doing. Gary wanted to be a cowboy, so I wanted to be a cowboy. We got cowboy outfits for birthdays, Christmas, etc. We grew up, grandpa did not approve of Gary playing cowboys when he was 12 or 13 so he was forced to give up his cowboy ways...except his Fanner 50. Gary was the Fastest Gun Alive, he was blazing fast. He goofed around as an adult and showed off his handgun talents, all of his band buddies knew he was fast. Long story short, they ended up getting some gig down in Las Vegas and there is this guy advertising himself as "The Fastest Gun Alive." Challenging anyone to see if they can beat him, popping balloons or something. The band guys hear about this and go back to tell Gary, "Hey man we watched this guy and you are definitely faster, go give a try." Gary never was much of a show-off, but the guys kept after him. So off they go to show the guy who really is the Fastest Gun Alive. The way the story went, Gary showed and challenged the guy, the guy let Gary practice a few times with the strange gun and holster and finally they went to see who was faster, Gary won, the guy packed up and left. Thats the story...

Sammy Davis was The Real Deal. I'll always remember when he gave a gun handling demonstration on Johnny Carson' show, fast draw, twirling and spinning, etc. When he sat down Johnny said, "Well, when you are Black and Jewish, it pays to be fast with a gun!"

Knew about Sammy Davis and some of the others.
Was a little blindsided by Jerry Lewis!

An old Hollywood trick is to line the holster with aluminum. When the shooter starts to throw down it’s a clean pull with no leather snags or drags. Less friction.

Have heard that from more than one source. With what I have read on Murphy, he was having some PTSD and may have just done it.

From what I heard about O'Brian being a little on the over self indulgent type I wouldn't have doubted Murphy shutting him down to put him in his place or basically to put up or shut up. I hate those egotistical ********es and love it when someone puts them in their place. I remember the worst *** kicking I ever got was a smaller guy that took it upon himself to prove what a jerk I was, I couldn't hold it against him afterward and remember quite clearly taking a knee and holding up my hand in submission after he had effectively taken me apart in a fistfight and him stepping back allowing me to stand. My buddies wanted to jump him but I told them that he beat me fair, leave him alone. Never forgot that moment...never saw him again.

Not defending O'Brian, but I did meet him once in Pittsburgh. He was at a HOBY function. HOBY, Hugh O'Brian History. May have and probably had changed from the 1950's.
