FAVORITE WAR MOVIES?
I have two favorites:
Patton. I never seem to get tired of watching Patton.
Midway. Not the new one. The one made in 1976 with lots
of footage from the actual battle.
What are your favorites?

If I had to pick one, it would be “To Hell and Back”. What other war movie starred the actual hero? It was also one of my Mom’s favorites and I remember watching it for the first time with her. I kind of think she had a thing for Mr. Murphy
Also my first toy weapon I can remember getting for Christmas was a Thompson in the configuration that was common during WWII. Played a lot of “cowboys and Indians” with it. Not exactly “period correct”

I have a long list.
My grandson, Logan (13) likes 1917, Pearl Harbor, Hacksaw Ridge, We Were Soldiers and the newer Midway. He has watched Saving Private Ryan 12 times. I am glad that he is so interested in them as his level of military history is far past that of his peers.
The kid's learning.

Great Escape... few others even come close. Great Escape was directed by John Sturges, certainly the best "action" director ever. Musical score was by Elmer Bernstein, perhaps the foremost in his business at the time. The cast was pretty much unmatched by the cast of other war movies. There is excellence in every aspect in this film, including the story.

"Band of Brothers", though it's maybe not technically a 'movie'. My wife and I watch it in its entirety at least once a year.

Too many favorites to name them all, but In Harm's Way certainly is near the top of the list. A little known, but very good one is Hell In The Pacific. It only has two people in the entire film, Lee Marvin and Toshiro Mifune.
In addition to Band Of Brothers, there is the companion film, The Pacific, and of course, Saving Private Ryan

Guess being a US Military historian and collector sort of ruins just about anything hollywood puts out. Band of Brothers seems to be the best with little hollywood garbage thrown in.
Kelly’s Hero’s is my favorite too, look at all the big names in it. Like “ **** Game” ( Don Rickles)says, “ make a Deal, Deal”, LOL

I have seen “ Hell is for Heroes” only one time. The many stations from DIREC TV never air it anymore. Lotta good character actors in it.
Look up the title … Using IMDB .
The premise & basic story line is based on the 95th Infantry and their struggle to get through France “ Lorraine Campaign “. Ultimately to win the siege battle of Metz & Fort Durant.
95th was my Dad’s outfit
( Welcome to Germany ; Thanks go to the 95th)

If you watch a movie and look for mistakes then the movie becomes something of a bust or laughable. An example is "TOP GUN". When we first watched it we picked it apart. Why you ask? Well, we were operating off a carrier at the time, just watching the deck and flying scenes, we picked out numerous things that were wrong. But when you don't look at those it is a pretty entertaining movie.
Also add in the movie "The Bridges at Toko-Ri" with William Holden.

1. Rough Riders. Probably the only movie we'll ever see on the War of 1898.
2. Attack and Retreat/Italiani Brave Gente. Makes you really feel for those poor slobs on the Eastern Front.

Had forgotten about "Rough Riders". Very good! It seems that almost every war picture put out by Turner Pictures was good.

Bridges at Toko Ri was a good one; I think it would easily make my top ten war movie list if I had a list. Von Ryan's Express probably would not, but it was still a pretty decent war film.

I’m surprised only one other person mentioned In Harm’s Way. I’ve seen that movie a number of times and always enjoyed it.

I read the book, Von Ryan's Express when I was a teenager, several years before I got to see the film. The book was really good, but I was disappointed with the film after seeing it; there were many changes made that I felt were either unnecessary for the story line or ruined it altogether. In the book, Major Oriani, the Italian officer who helped Ryan and the others escape, was the real Italian bad guy, and the Commandant of the camp, Col. Battaglia, was the one sympathetic to the prisoners. Another change was the arrangement of the prison train; the film had the command car at the back of the train and the guards on top of the cars facing forward. The book has the command car behind the engine tender and the guards facing the rear of the train, which makes infinitely more sense to guard against soldiers dropping from under the cars, plus keeps the guards' backs to the wind as the train moved forward. Quite a few other changes like that, and Colonel Ryan doesn't get killed in the book. I also didn't care for Frank Sinatra as Von Ryan, or Trevor Howard as Major Fincham.

As a kid, I read the book before I saw the movie. Not the normal war movie, but good.

Our perspectives on movies are very different and that's as it should be. In my opinion only, many of the films listed in this thread aren't excellent war films, but are "pretty good and worth watching - once". "Von Ryan's Express" is a good example.
Additionally, with regard to facts...historical inaccuracy doesn't bother me. Some are quite critical of a lack of correctness but they'll continue to watch a film even after they're aware it contains historical flaws. I don't expect a factual account in something intended as entertainment. The true story might not be nearly as good as the fictionalized version. I'll read a dull history book if I want facts.
