I remember him best from Laredo and one episode of The Rockford Files.

Smith was playing a tough guy after Jim. Jim went inside a restroom, soaped,(slickened) the floor and waited. As he Smith's character entered the restroom he saw Jim, ran at him and of course hit the floor.

Jim says something like, you know what the trouble is with karate? It assumes the other guy will fight fair.

A fine actor, William Smith was a household face. It's a shame most folks didn't know his name. RIP

I admit I wasn't sure who he was by name either. Once I looked him up, the first role that came to mind was that of the wily Colonel Strelnikov in the original Red Dawn. A great actor indeed. R.I.P. Mr. Smith.

I also remember him, but not his name!
He was in a bunch of stuff!
Played a Mean Commie in Red Dawn.
Gave Swayze all he could handle.
RIP

I had no idea of his USAF service. He also spoke 5 lanquages and had taught at UCLA. From wiki:

"During the Korean War he was a Russian Intercept Interrogator and flew secret ferret missions over the Russian SFSR. He had both CIA and NSA clearance and intended to enter a classified position with the U.S. government, but while he was working on his doctorate studies he landed an acting contract with MGM."

Godspeed.

Translation of Colonel Strelnikov's speech:

"What I despise most about warfare, is the hypocrisy if often breeds. I've heard euphemisms that we are 'containing the enemy', that our 'sector of pacification is growing'. These are the tactics of the lie. Lies have the stench of death and defeat. You can only win a war by exterminating the enemy!

Do you know who we are fighting? We are fighting Wolverines: small, ferocious animals. For them, you need a hunter. And as you know, I am a hunter.

From this moment on, there will be no further reprisals against civilians. This was stupid. Impotence. Comrades, if a fox stole your chickens, would you slaughter your pig because he saw the fox? No! You would hunt down the fox, find where it lives and destroy it! How do we do this? Become a fox."

Funny, but I just watched him on an episode of "Perry Mason". Often crosses my mind that a mark of getting older is that you tend to watch TV shows in which all the actors are dead - and I had the thought "well he's not dead .....".

I remember him in a 2 part Gunsmoke in which he shot Miss Kitty. In a pretty hateful and direct manner that had quite an impact.

I hear he was a well read and fairly cosmopolitan guy.

RIP...

Like many I remember him from a lot of shows where you thought I have seen that guy many times. I also mainly and firstly remember him from Laredo while visiting with grandparents as a kid. Their TV and antenna only picked up a limited number of channels and one of the most watched if not the most watched was an independent station out of Dallas that ran the old western series every weekend. They also aired the old Irwin Allen sci-fi shows from the 1960s and old movies like Abbott and Costello and the Penny Singleton and Arthur Lake Blondie movie series.

sorry to see this news he was one of my tv heros watching laredo when i was a kid. impressive guy, i wanted to be like william smith when i grew up. i might have i got half way there but that was it.
