IMHO, Mao made Stalin look like an amateur. Have yet to see “ an accurate” account of how many Chinese he had killed.

We were shown the correct way to throw a grenade and as well as all the things not to do. Unfortunately, life has taught me some people don't retain instructions very well and when you stress them some of them will go completely brainless. Some people get overly stressed when they are standing there holding a grenade with the pin out knowing it is a hunk of high explosives wrapped in shrapnel and all they can think of is "GET RID of IT" LOL

Something else that amazes me is those same people will walk between of a car, a forklift or a truck and a building or other structure and all that is between them and being crushed is a brake line, a clutch linkage a foot slipping and never think twice. Those are no less likely fail than the fuse mechanism in a grenade. Most grenades don't have 100,000 miles and a couple dents and been worked on by who know who either.
All you really had to do was hold the spoon tight and then get it over the berm and you would be fine. If Ol Petroca, the platoon klutz didn't blow himself up, I figured I would be fine. Besides I was pretty sure that nervous acting trainer wanted to go home at the end of the day.
Which brings me to the question. Just how bad do you have to screw up what to end up with that job anyway?? That can't be considered a choice billet.

When I was a Guard Chief at a Marine Barracks, the 1stSgt. and I left bobbytraps for each other all the time. Nothing was safe or off limits....even coffee cups.

It always amazed me how a little kid could get through three rows of concertina in 10 seconds or less just to sell you a warm Coke.

I was fairly new to RVN and was heading down to the latrine one evening.
A loud parade ground voice came from a group of GIs " MISTER Anton, don't forget your flashlight SIR!"
I answered back "Thank you First Sgt., but I'm a big boy now and can find my around in the dark."
"As you wish sir, but there was a step and a half seen down there earlier."
There was considerable laughter as I returned to my hootch for a flashlight.
Yes indeed many dangers in RVN.

The 122 makes a BIG explosion. Charlie liked to toss in a few on our flight line while we did out morning pre-flight inspections. I took this picture after the fire was put out. The damage was actually done by a mortar barrage.

At Da Nang it was hard for Charlie to hit the fixed wing Marine side of the base. Freedom Hill made it hard for them to get the proper angle. They could do it but took some doing. Charlie could hit the Air Force at Gunfighter Village much easier. Also the Marine helos at Marble Mountain got their fair share.

Seems they liked to throw a few our way. They stopped using mortars when the Army moved out to Ky Ha. We just got the rockets. They launched from the nearby mountains. The planes were the hot pad planes and the rocket didn't explode. It was about 50 feet from the hangar.
Oh the fun we had.

One landed in a grassy field in our Company area. It mowed the grass right down to the ground in a very large diameter circle. Nothing in the circle was untouched, everything was shredded.

That's funny. I wonder what they put in that 4 leaf clover.
One of the insidious booby traps we encountered were empty C-rat cans or a frag can wired to a branch with a frag with the pin pulled inside. When we landed, the rotor wash blew the branches around and the frag would fall out. That was not funny.

Have seen the c-rat cans used. Also have seen the used law tube used when someone forgot to destroy it after use.

Me either. Had a friend who was a track Cdr. (113s) with the 25th Mech. After his third PH they loaned him to us to run our little O club. He explained to me why they carried rolls of chain link fence on their APCs. He got his 4th PH and his ticket home working for us. I'll tell the story in another thread.
ATTACK !!

Yea, sirens were always late. We used to sit on top of a bunker and watch rockets going into Bien Hoa, streaks of blue light.
