Yep there's lots of stuff buried. My unit in RVN also had a bulldozer.
I wondered how they buried the bulldozer at the end.

We had a 4X4 sheet of plywood with a gold painted spade on it. It was awarded to "The Diggers". Seems as if there was a bunch of spare parts (read black boxes) in the shop when an inspection was coming due. The NCOIC told the boys to hide the stuff. So, they buried it. When the inspection was over the NCOIC told them to get it back in the shop. Only one problem was the guys that buried the components had rotated home and no one else knew where it was buried. When the word got out they were awarded the "Golden Shovel Award To The Diggers Of VMA(AW)***".

No Rome plow, just a D-4? Cat IIRC. Forget where it came from. The E-7 that operated it was a wounded combat Veteran that got transferred to our unit instead of going back to US. He was one of the best NCO’s we had. Would have to dig out my year book to find his name….

Aren't we all to some degree. I went to the VA, just to get a foot in the door. Almost everything I have wrong with me, they chalked it up to Agent Orange.

Sorry to hear that. I do not really use the VA for anything. Just wanted to get my foot in the door if ever needed. Medicare and Tri-Care let me use the Doctors that I know and worked with for 20 years.

In the Corps when I was in, it was called a "Chinese Fire Drill". I figure (never assume) in other Services and at other times it was called something different............

In boot camp the D.I.'s called it monkey drills. Must have been an "Old Corps" thing. All I know is they didn't like the way the D.I's taught us how to match. Oh well that's just life. Oh the fun we had.
Oh btw we had air raid drills in the barracks every so often. They were fun too.

We went through a lot of CO's in our squadron that we didn't know who was running the place. We had several who would down an aircraft just by kicking the nose gear.
Colonels and light birds, must have been short timers or just collecting ribbons. A lot of people flew in country for a day or so and said I was there. I guess the same thing happens today.
Oh the fun we had.

We had two CO's while I was in country. The first rotated home as his tour was up. The other stayed with us until the squadron rotated back to EL Toro and disbanded. All our aircrews flew their missions as required. Once in a while an aircraft would go down in the chocks, but not often. And never if they were flying close air support for the grunts. Don't get me wrong I have seen Fair Weather Aircrews that supposed to fly All Weather aircraft but didn't. Most of our aircrews would fly an aircraft with a problem, just as long as they knew about it. As the Maintenance Control Chief there were a few that I downed in the chocks, and had the Pilot override me and flew it anyway. There were some good "sticks' and some bad, the good outweighed the bad.

Couldn't agree more. Major Campo was the only one I knew who completed his tour, both at Danang and Chu lai. We had extremely good pilots who went all out to support the grunts. Many a plane came back with bullet holes, mud and tree branches in the leading wing. Those were the pilots who talked to the peons who kept them flying.
Our ground crews worked their butts off keeping the best of the carrier planes flying. We got the good ones from the Navy when they couldn't land on carriers anymore.

Only recall police call during basic. AIT at APG lived off base so not much of the barracks duties. Surely not in RVN, way to busy plus there were Papasans that did all the “ grounds maint. “ in Co area. Had a few at Bragg but lived off post and got on pistol team after 6 months there.

I don't know how they do it in the Corps but I noticed, over 32 years, the officers of O-4 and above in the Army pretty much stopped flying, except to make minimums to qualify for flight pay. In the USAF O-5s and O-6s will be out there dropping bombs and strafing bad guys. I know there are exceptions.

Knew a full bird Colonel that was Chief of Staff for the Marine Air Wing during Desert Storm 1 that flew all the missions he could. He was 60 years old at the time. He had been flying since 1953.

My brother was a seabee stationed in Italy. He was the Armorer and had lots of 1911 parts. I asked him to keep them when he rotated back to the U.S., but he said they had to be destroyed. He also said they had new, in the boxes, power tools, hand tools, etc. that had to be buried or destroyed when they left.
My father-in-law was in the Navy and he said when
WWII ended, they pushed aircraft, still in he crates, along with jeeps and other equipment over the side because they could not bring the equipment home.
What a waste.

Yup.
During Desert Storm there were a lot of officers showing up looking for jobs. I think it was more for a career enhancer than a desire to help.
There were many O-4's looking for promotions and O-5's looking for flag rank; being in 'combat' was a plus, especially with the up or out career policies.

There were times in the Corps when it felt like this. The first 16 years we were married I was on the road for 8 of them.

tried explaining to a Niece that was marrying a Marine that she was hitching her wagon to a band of Gypsies.
Married 3 months, hubby got TAD orders to Japan. Upon his return, change of Duty Station to Cherry Point.
Oh yea, she was pregnant during the move.
Not sure if he PO's his CO or he is that good, but he gets a lot of 2-3 week trips to some garden spot around the world; unaccompanied of course.

Been there done that. My first four years I was in I spent 24 months in Westpac. Back in the states we deployed about every six months for a 2-4 weeks at a time. Spent a couple of more year deployments and four six month deployments and 1 1/2 years on a flight deck. Worked out I guess. When I made 1stSgt., I asked for a rifle company, The monitor said no. He said my overseas control date was to good. I could not be sent to a deployable unit for six years. Said even though I had not deployed for several years, I had done enough that all my peers had to deploy before I could go again. Wife was happy!

In my present world it is known as a goat roping. As apposed to a goat ====
Speaking of which, there was a cowboy who always wanted to rope an antelope. Once he did, all he wanted was to unrope one as it immediately took off running circles around him and his horse.

My cousins husband was in Vietnam 67 till around 69.
I've known him 40 years, and when I first met him I asked questions about his time there. He always said he didn't want to talk about it. One time when he was pretty buzzed he told me he was in the Da Nang area a some. That was all he ever told me.
Not long after they got married she found a box with pictures of him holding heads like hunting trophy's. I'm sure he got rid of them after that.
Odd how some people talk about that war and others won't say a word.

It affects folks differently. Have friends that were at Khe Sanh and another that was in 1stBn 9th Marines when they got the name "The Walking Dead". They had rough times, but will talk about it with others that were there.

Some put those memories in a vault in their brain and close the door......

I've known a lot of people who served in VN and for the most part they only talk about the "good times". When I got out I had a roommate who was a paratrooper/rigger in the Army. He only talked about the fun he had jumping out of an airplane.
My uncle served in Patton's Armored Division in WWII (Battle of the Bulge) and we could not drag anything out of him about what it was like. The only thing he ever said was that when the planes came in and he manned the 50 cal on top of the tank, he just pointed and shot the machine gun.
Most people here talk about the "funny/ironic" stuff that happened or maybe boot camp. This forum has allowed folks to talk.

You remember the good times and try to forget the bad times.

Whose dream for Christmas? The young stud to be delivered or for the young ladies to have one delivered?

From one of our brethren. I doubt the same Christmas wishlist would hold true today.
