Just like when you would forget to answer the office phone properly. When the person (usually a senior SNCO or an officer) would ask who is this?? Our response would be "You don't know do you?" and hang up. That person would leave the work area so when the irate "Heavy" got there, he could not be identified by the sound of his voice.

Heaven knows how many cups of coffee that I drank while on active duty. It seemed like my coffee cup was always full.

Ah, coffee you could chew. The Corps caused me to hate coffee, especially the hangar version. Oh the fun we had.

Not everybody's music or stereos were wonderful when living in the barracks.

2nd: Me with one of the contestants (with mandatory cerveza).

One day, we reported several of the trash pickup people measuring the distance from the road to the barracks. It seems they were pacing the distance off and writing it down. Not long after that the civilians disappeared for a month or two. Couldn't trust young Vietnamese men, never understood why they were not in the RVN, (figured out they were young VC). Oh the fun we had.

Heard about them catching a House Mouse (young girl) at Marble Mountain hooking a pair of Coke cans onto the brackets holding the gas tanks in a 6X6's. In the cans were C-4 and a timer. She'd hang them and set the timer. Lost a couple before they caught her.

Same thing when the Fleet arrives back in Hawaii.
Prices go up, rooms get filled, certain parts of town get active and the beach at Fort DeRussy gets busy.

LOL, “ they” use it it in Asia, nasty fertilizer. For a example carefully read “ Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo” when the A/C made it to China and the crews bailed out.

I was deployed to Japan in the mid 70's. I brought my Wife and Daughter over for about six months. There were rice paddies across the street from the house. The first time my Wife saw the japanese "fertilizing" the paddies, I thought she was going to have a coronary!!

There is barracks detail even in the other place (h***). Someone thought it would be nice to rake the sand around the hooches at Chu Lai. So every Friday we had to rake the sand and make everything nice. Sometimes senior Staff NCO's have way too much time on their hands or else they are brain dead and need something to do. Someone even came upwith the idea of running a PRT after working twelve hours a day seven days a week. Oh the fun we had.

Sometimes the junior Marines needed something to keep them occupied and out of mischief. Usually I did "Make Work" for my Marines to keep them from being NJP'd. I would give them the choice of "doing some work for the Gunny or going to see the C.O. at Office Hours".

Then at Ft. Rucker, in those old WW Ii barracks with coal fired furnaces someone had to stand fire guard every night during cold weather. I was married at the time (big mistake) and lived off post in a trailer park.

In the Corps, the old squadbay (read WW II) style barracks, there were "Fire Watches" 24/7. With the newer style (rooms), the "Fire Watches" were done away with.

At BCT at good old Ft. Puke they had us cutting grass around the mess hall with scissors. Oh, and painting the rocks along the paths with white paint. the company area looked pretty strac.

Our Ordnance Chief (Marine SNCO's) had a punishment for their young Marines when they had a Faux Pas. We used MK-76 Practice Bombs for most training missions. They weighed 25 pounds A U.S. Navy ordnanceman stacks blue MK-76 practice bombs. We got them in pallets. When the NCOIC's had Marines that needed to be reminded of not getting into trouble, they got to move the MK-76's (usually a couple of hundred) from Point A to Point B and then back.

There is a difference between busy work and working 12 hour shifts seven days a week. Maybe younger guys needed motivation stateside but being in country was all the motivation we needed to keep the planes flying.
We had a busy detail once. We had to move a bunch of shipping crates from one area to another. We decided to take our time. Our suspicions were correct when we were told to move them back to their original area. It was difficult in the sand and each crate needed to picked up by hand and moved. We had only moved about a third of them so it wasn't too bad.
I was fortunate to have really great Sgt Majors while I was in VMFA-115. The first one was an original "winger" and the other was Sgt Major Bryant. They treated the enlisted men with respect and got it in return. There wasn't much we would do for either of them.
I mostly worked night shift in the Corps. I liked working on the aircraft. There were fewer interruptions on night shift, aka busy work. I think that is why I extended my tour. Oh the fun we had.

Been there and done that. I put two tours in-country. Worked Night Crew on both tours. I worked on A6's and we did most of our flying at night over the trail. I preferred to be overseas most of the time I was in the Corps if I could. Did eight tours total overseas.

Played the same games as I came up through the ranks. We had good Sgt.Majors and bad ones. Some thought they were still in the grunts. When I was a GySgt and the Maintenance Control Chief, we had a new grunt Sgt.Major come into control and tell me he wanted a formation "right now". We were in the middle of a launch and I told him to go to the Ops Department and tell them. I also added he may get one scheduled in a week or two. Thought he was going to have a coronary on the spot. I called the Maintenance Officer (a Major) and told him what was going on. He called the C.O. (a Lt.Col.) and told him. He called the Sgt.Major in and explained the facts of life to him. Never saw that Sgt.Major on the hanger deck again........

Make your own caption. I can think of several, but they may not make it by the Mod's.

No offense to the "O's" meant, but I thought it was humorous. Know folks on both sides of the coin.

When people call me sir, I always say, don't call me that I work for a living.
