Default Bought a new project.







I bought this 1976 Ford F-250 last week from a good friend.
Its ben sitting on his property for 19 years.
He'd start it and drive it a short distance maybe once a year.




I took the brush guard off and had to replace one side of the
grill that was busted.



I bought new tires and cleaned up the old Dodge wheels.

It has a 390 out of a 1966 Mercury Monterey for power. It runs
pretty darn good.

I have a new seat cover, dash pad and a lot of other
miscellaneous parts waiting at home for me.

Not a restoration, I just needed an extra PU. My truck camper is
on my other truck about 9 month out of the year.

Had the same truck in the 150. 300 - 6 banger. Dumped the 3 on the tree for a 4 speed. Drove it 25 years and 300,000 miles before the second cab mount went out. And most of the body. For a two wheel drive, it would go just about anywhere. And did.

4C is Cassia county. I was the lone FBI guy in Twin Falls for five years, and I covered that county. They had some no-nonsense boys in the SO there.

We had (bought new) a 1975 F150 that was an absolute brute.

I think it came with either a 360 or 400 motor. It was manual 4 speed trans, AM radio, heater, manual windows, rubber mats …. No carpet. El cheap-o white with a blue vinyl interior. Some called them a “hi-boy” cause they were pretty tall with skinny tires. I remember step dad putting a step on the passenger side for my mom to get in and out.

Congratulation on finding that old war horse. Seeing it and reading your story brought back a lot of good memories.

The owner, who we have no idea where he is kept it licensed back in Idaho where his residence was. The truck was here in Utah for years. It was last licensed in 2003.

He was here logging.

I had a black 79 F100 short bed style side, 300 with 3 on the tree. Loved that truck. It went anywhere. Unfortunately it was “shot” out from under me, head on by a big 88 Olsmobile.

Thanks everyone, I am very pleased with my "new" truck.

"highboy" is the name folks gave it, Ford called it a "Factory High Rider" in their literature in 1969. The term applies to 1967- 1977 1/2 4-wds.

I think they are great looking trucks.

Looks like a great snow machine with those narrow tires. I have a 96 F250 with 285-75s and the width makes it plow to some degree rather than cutting through -good enough for these parts, though.

Can understand that. Here in Florida if you can find a usable tag from the year your antique car was made, you can use it.

Same here in Utah, it would be my second choice.

I did that on a 1963 Mercury that I owned years ago.

AA - very early plate #, 1101 - my oldest daughter's B-Day.




I also found the correct year plates for a vintage 1969 travel trailer I had.

I had an ‘84 f250 4x4 with a 351,4 on the floor,manual hubs,am radio,heater,ps,pb and that was it. It was a tank.Drove it til the fender wells rusted out the 2nd time ;-)

You may be going overboard with that new seat cover, A couple of yards of duck tape and some stuffing from an old pillow should have it right in no time and cheaper too.

Ya just gotta love an old truck that has been there and done that.

Reminds me of one that I had in college....mine was a '79 F-350 short wheel base 4x4 with a 460. It had every option available in 1979 (yes auto tranny )

I sold it after hurricane Katrina ran gas prices up over $4 a gallon. It got 3-4 miles to the gallon, but was a chick magnet at the beach and out mudding

I called the guy who bought it, and he sold it after about 6 months.....I still kind of want it back

I bought this '79 F-250 new back in June 1979. 4-wd, Ranger XLT, two tone paint, camper special,
factory AC and a factory Ford shell - but mine had a 4-sp.




I bought it to go 4-wheeling. I added a Detroit Locker to the rear Dana 60,
a Ford Trak-Lok to the front Dana 44 and a dual-fuel propane
conversion.
I LOVED that truck.



I sold it back in 2013. It was pretty well all used up.

Love those 73-79's. I had two and a 78 Bronco.
Yours has no trim and doesn't look rusty.
I always preferred the plain sides.
Those two tone ones with side chrome and fender trim looked cool.
But if you were in a wet place, all those trim holes were rust scabs waiting to eat your truck.

Old blankets or bedspreads work well as seat covers. Cheaper than duct tape.

My project is not nearly as old or cool as yours but I rescued my Dad’s 2000 F150 from under a pecan tree in my mom’s yard in south Louisiana. My dad bought it new and died from cancer three years later. My mom and my older sister drove it occasionally after that but it has been sitting for over 3 years. Less than 34k miles on it.

Thanks. I wasn’t in the market for a 2000 Ford F-150 but having my dad’s last truck… sort of like having a bit of him with me.

It cleaned up well but still needs to be buffed out. I’ll have to try the baby wipes.

You can find a padded camo seat cover that will work great on that truck. My son had one in his. I had a 67 F250 for many years. 300 six with a floor shift with the granny gear. It a posi-track rear end and would go some places a newer 4X4 wouldn't go. I once borrowed a neighbors home made trailer to haul off an old house I tore down to make a barn. The trailer had three house trailer axles and a rough cut wood floor. I filled up the bed of the truck with lumber stacked over the cab and stacked up the 30' trailer about as high. I had to drive 40+ miles to get it all home. I had a pretty good load and if I got over 40 mph the front end of the truck would rise up off the road. I kept it around 30 mph and got home safely with one load. Might do it a little different now. I had that truck for over 20 years and sold it to a friend of mine who still drives it on his farm.

This was my 1979 F-250 Ranger XLT. This is why I picked that seat cover.

These were the options that were ordered for my truck.

My truck was actually produced May 10th, 1976 - one day ahead of schedule.

It was built in San Hose, CA and was ordered by a dealer in Seattle, WA.

I do wish it still had the in-bed spare tire carrier. They are rare and when you do find one they are expensive. I'm pretty sure I'll be going for an aftermarket one.

I got my new dash pad installed today. They only come in one color, black.
I am actually thrilled that someone still makes one.
Fitment isn't perfect but neither is the truck.

I learned to drive a stick in my Dad’s ‘76 F100. It was a good truck, still running when what was left of it went to the junk yard. Rust eventually ate the cab mounts, wheel wells, floor pan and a good part of the frame.

I started in produce business in 1973 and for the next 25 years had a couple dozen pickups. 68 chevy 3 on tree 6 cyl was my 1st. Had a 1969 16' F600 box truck - ex ryder rental w 300ci inline 6. 4 sp manual. Great truck great motor

What brand of tires are those? They remind me of Armstrong Tru-Traks I had on a 73 Blazer I once owned.

That old beast is beautiful, everything you need and nothing you don't.

I have had several good old Ford pickups, a 1954, 1966, 1972, 1979, and my current 1989 F-250 XLT 460/410 gears and 118,000 actual miles. 10 MPG empty, full, uphill and down. It will pull a mountain and climb a tree if it can get traction. I mainly only drive it now if I need to haul something.

I wish it had your 4-wheel chassie under it.

1966 is one of my favorite Ford trucks. I bought a '79 F-250 4-wd new and IMO it was the toughest truck ever built.

They are Deestone Tires and I ordered them thru SimpleTire.com.

Dunlop and a couple of other companies still make them.

I just think they are the perfect fit for the truck.
