I like cats. Cats can serve as role models. One particular cat adopted our family when I was about 12. He was a disheveled old tom who wandered into our yard. Mom felt sorry for him, so she fed him. Well, you know how that works. He never left. I came to admire his ways, and named him "Efficient". All he did was eat and sleep, but he was really good at those. I thought that was a lifestyle to aspire to, so he became a role model for my retirement. I'm pretty sure I've achieved it, so thanks, Efficient.
Fine Cat, Efficient

In the Random Photograohs thread #4743, about to post yet another cat pic, I asked, "Have we reached "peak cat" here yet?" I think the answer is a fairly resounding "No."

Alright, this has been coming for a while now so here goes:
I'll preface my comments with a couple of thoughts.
. Everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion and noone has the right to criticize another's opinion. Live and let live.
. A lot of people form opinions based on what they have HEARD or READ and NOT on first hand experience. This applies to almost everything out there. There is a name for it but I don't know what it is.
I'm living proof that perceptions can change as we age. I have always been a dog lover...still am. But I was a cat hater. Had several bad experiences which only served to turn me off even more.
So....the years roll by and then on a visit to relatives in the country (where I now live) in January of 2005, we were all out on the front porch when this scrawny beat up looking orange cat came up out of the woods right up onto the front porch. rubbing our legs and meowing. My SIL picked him up and he purred loudly.
Everyone looked at me...Hell no! No way!
SIL said take him home, clean him up and give him a chance. If it doesn't work out bring him back and I'll take him. I agreed telling her that I would hold her to it.
We took him home and took him to the vet. $2500.00 later he was all st and immediately started to gain weight and look better. Turned out he was FIV-positive (feline aides). we had the pleasure of his friendship for 7 years before he passed away.
It is the best relationship I ever had with and animal. He was my friend, my confident and cared for me when I needed it.
You have to go into cat ownership with the right expectations and the right attitude. And you have to be patient. But in the fullness of time you can have a very rewarding relationship with a cat. Each one is an individual with his own personality. We curree3ently have 3 cats. One is aloof but friendly in his way. One is a rascal, the Eddie Haskle of cats. One loves every body. Always wanting you to love on him. But all 3, despite their differences, are great pets and a source of comfort and joy.
1. His first day as our pet.
2. I came home from work sick and he stayed with me
3. He weighed 10 lbs when we got him. he weighed 21 lbs in this pic. Turned out to be a handsome feller.
4. Another point in his favor, he loved guns and the smell of Hoppe's #9.
In the words of Jimmy BUffet, "Don't ever try to describe the ocean if you've never seen it...you might just wind up being wrong.
As you were....

That was a darned fine sermon, preacher!
As to loving the smell of Hoppe's #9, one of my gf's cats ("Charlie of the epic whiskers") loves the smell of Clorox when she is cleaning the house, and goes nuts smelling all the disinfected areas. Go figger.

My dog tells me when the bear is here at the house. Some of my six cats head for under my bed that’s the alarm it’s serious. I adopt abandoned kittens people are heartless.

I love cats and have had several world class felines. Don't care much for those that don't like cats but they probably don't care much for me either.

I hear ya. I really don't understand why folks will go out of their way to tell me how much they dislike house cats when they know how special they are to me.
Meanness, I guess.

My new place was vacant for a while. The outside was over run with rodents. The three feral kittens I adopted cleaned the yard up snakes too.

CFF488E8-8BE8-4E78-97F6-59D48FD1795A.jpg Im a Greyhound person, best dog, if you can find one to rescue/ adopt nowdays. All mine have gone across the rainbow bridge, really miss them. Can not have pets where I live now but have a couple of mostly feral cats that I feed. One ole Tom is starting to calm down. Tamed a few last place I lived. Best to catch them, to vet to get fixed and ear clipped, not to bad.

Cat people. We had to put our beloved Oliver kitty to sleep at the end of September.
We still have his fur brother Chessie. He's a good little guy. He just got a mouse downstairs. Extra treats for him after supper.
Oliver is the tabby, Chessie is the tiger.

Rusty er al, It's a macho thing. those guys insecure in there manhood bolster their manhood by proclaiming their hated for cats. I know, I was once guilty of it myself. I was one of the lucky ones I finally saw the truth, thanks to Frito.
Happiness is a cat sleeping next to you in the bed. We have 3 of them every night.

My wife rescued this little guy a few months ago. He's gonna be a good one I can tell, but I don't think he'll be a great one. When she was trying to come up with a name for him, she said, "I don't know what to call him, but he sure is a pistol". So I suggested Pistol Pete. He for sure is a pistol. He gets the zoomies every evening and tears around the house like a wild man. Hasn't torn anything up yet. She was worried about the dachshunds trying to hurt him, but Pete gives 'em hell.

I was never a "Cat Person" until one morning I walked out on my back deck and felt something rubbing on my leg !! I looked down and discovered a young cat. The cat was very quiet and loving and I thought that It problely was a neighbor's. The cat stayed around the deck and I put a ad in the local paper as I was sure that the cat was lost. NOPE, no response from my ad. After a couple of days I finally gave the cat some water and later some food. This darn cat considers this is her home and gets fed twice a day when my two dogs are fed. I guess now I am a "Cat Person".

I love the big cats. Was all set to make a donation to a local zoo to spend an hour playing with a baby tiger but COVID canceled it.

Animals like people all have different personalities you just have to get to know them. I have been friends with horses ,cows, and other critters as well as dogs and cats.

I love dogs and cats, but I am just not a "little" dog person. I've had at least 1 cat and at times 3 or 4 almost continuously for the last 40 years. Since I downsized, after a divorce, and moved into the city, the new yard isn't really large enough for a large dog to run but I keep looking for the right one. My current feline buddies are great company.

I like most cats and really loved some. Right now we have two feral house cats that we adopted. My wife can sometime hold or pet them, me not so much. I can pet them sometimes at bedtime. Oh well it's only been a couple years. Someday I would like to have a real cat again.

We love cats and have always had one. One of the things that I love about them is their eyes,,, how their pupils can change depending on what they intend to do. Always a giveaway when they are ready to pounce. I am also amazed how they can stare you down as I have had to look away many times when they make their mind up not to be intimidated. Love our Smokey.

My cat is on my lap as I type this.
Five years ago she disappeared in the first week of December. After two weeks I started looking for another cat, a week later she showed up with a very well fed look. She'd been mooching off neighbors down the row.

Love all furry friends. Even if you don't like cats, for whatever reason is festering in your soul, they are the best vermin control you can have. Should keep one or two around anyway just for that.

About 15 years ago I was walking through a nearby town, saw this big old fat pale orange cat, reached down to pet him....you talk about an instant friend, the next thing I know he was rubbing against my legs, weaving in and out. I couldn't get rid of him.

We like both cats and dogs. Both animals are so often personality wise how they were treated in the past good or bad, but our experience is to be a bit wary of folks that a cat, or dog, doesn't seem to like. We are most likely to trust the animal and not the person.

If Carl Sandburg had cats...
... he might be this person.
The fog comes
on little cat feet.
It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on

I'm pretty much the polar opposite of the TC.
I like Cats, I like that they're more emotionally independent, not requiring constant attention/affection, that they're more quiet, relaxed, and don't require exhaustive training.
Yes, cats will claw furniture, but anyone who adopts a cat without knowing this when it's common knowledge, fails to purchase scratching posts, and doesn't cover/pad their furniture has only themselves to blame.
It's no different than getting a breed of dog that is known to dig holes, then getting upset when they leave it out in their yard and it, well...digs holes.
Over all, the whole Cats vs Dogs argument is entirely subjective and depends upon the personality/quirks of the individual. Personally, I don't like loud repetitive noises, getting jumped/slobbered on, hyperactivity, or having to make time to play with an animal. So for me, a Cat is better because they don't make loud repetitive noises, (bark) when they do jump on you it's lighter/less clumsy, are more relaxed, and are happy just to sit on your lap.

True. That ominous barfing noise at 3:27am can't be described as loud and repetitive. Possibly worse is the one you don't hear but which is quickly found by bare feet a couple of hours later.
As to shredding the furniture, my cat has various items to scratch but he is still intent on continuing the destruction of the Ikea couch begun by a previous feline companion many years ago. When I finally get around to replacing it, I'm thinking of preserving the two shredded arms and putting them on stands in the hope that he will be lured away from the new one.
