Empty Shelves At Supermarkets

Local Publix is short on Gatorade and such as well as coffee creamer. Other than that...

Lots of holes on the shelf/coolers at QFC(Kroger) here in Seattle. I'll try Fred Meyer (Kroger big box) tomorrow. Been hit or miss since summer here.

Coincidentally my local giant eagle has no Gatorade zero or fat-free half-and-half and the fiber one cereal is in short supply.
If I go to shop 'n save they have all the Gatorade zero I want

No problem here at Whole Foods or Sprouts, but they are unusually crowded probably because of the King Soopers strike here in the Denver area.

Oddly enough, the King Soopers that houses my pharmacy has plenty of produce and no empty shelves. I wouldn't cross the picket line except to get my prescriptions.

My most recent grocery run was last Tuesday. Empty shelves in the cereal and cracker aisles. Meat selections were minimal, lots of empty space in the coolers. Produce (fresh fruits and vegetables) looked pretty good, nice selection. Fresh milk, half & half, etc, about half stocked with lots of empty spaces. Flour, sugar, salt, baking staples in pretty good supply.

Next day Kroger (King Soopers) employees went out on strike. The grocery list is ready for my next trip, probably tomorrow, so I will see what it looks like then.

We usually have enough on hand (freezer, pantry, etc) to get us by for a month or so if necessary, but we enjoy a lot of fresh stuff and the empty shelves cause some concerns. Prices on what is available bring more concerns.

Many of the local fast food joints have shut down everything but the drive-thru option; apparently no one is showing up for work at $15-plus per hour.

Meanwhile, gasoline and diesel prices have nearly doubled since last year, but it doesn't seem to have any effect on traffic volume. Everyone still seems to be out and about, and driving like their lives depended on getting there really fast.

Interesting times.

Aren't they though!

I'm finding sparse shelves where cat food used to be.

There is a logic to that. With so many people home, and not drinking at the bar or at sporting events, aluminum is in short supply. Those venues serve kegged beer., and they get recycled easily So all the extra beverage cans vs fountain drinks and kegged beer have made it hard to get cans for wet cat food.

This was at our Kroger last week, meat & chicken freezers were low. Had plenty of snack cakes, cookies & ice cream. Bags of cereal were almost gone.
Still walked out paying over $300.00, at least we had something to go with our coffee in the morning.

It seems to vary from store to store and product type. Sounds like it might get worse before it gets better.

We went to Costco yesterday - didn't see any empty shelves, but the upper racks of shelving weren't as stocked as they normally are.
Wife just got back from grocery shopping at WinCo and said that there were some empty shelves there...

That looks like the Valentine's seasonal section before they stock it with candy.

Was in Wally World locally(Cody) on Saat. some shortages in some items... Cereals were in kinda short supply. Especially unsweetened varieties such as Corn Flakes Cheerios. Prices are ridiculous on sweetened ******* so maybe moms are buying the cheaper stuff. Some veggies were short supplies too. Was in Costco today some fruits and veggies were not available. The price of meat is ridiculous and prices of cattle are at really low levels. Somebody is making a REAL killing. Pork prices are up too...in the stores

This has been going on for a while... guess some people have been lucky and haven't seen (or noticed) it as much. The store I work at has had issues keeping sections stocked since the whole pandemic mess started and it doesn't seem to be getting noticeably better. Most of the shortages we are seeing now are concentrated in certain types of items.... Why? I don't know for sure, packaging, shipping, basic supply shortage? All of the above I would suspect.

Pet food and paint are the two biggest issues on the dry goods side of the store (along with certain cleaners and household chemicals). On the grocery side there seem to be whole sections that sit empty for too long. When product does come in it's usually just enough to stock the main section and if it's anything in demand it's soon empty again. The "just in time" merchandising system seems to be collapsing from the effects of all the events of the last couple years........... Short supply, shipping bottlenecks, unexpected effects from government actions on related businesses. "May you live in interesting times" is said to be an ancient Chinese curse. I think we are seeing a bit of that ourselves

Yes, we have seen some dramatic shortages.
No fresh chicken in several large chains at times...none. Some other items have been very hit or miss as well.
Various frozen foods, cereals, etc are lately missing or very low stock.
The wife has had to go to 2-4 different stores to get what we wanted at times.

We live rural, about 25 miles to a shopping area in 3 different directions. Many times one store is light on product but if we had went in a other direction we would have found more. Seen this too many time so it seems to be interesting as to why.

Being retired we can shop in the middle of a week day and not encounter a lot of people. Less people more food, whoed a thunk it.

Couple of our neighbors of ours was sick, not coved, and they asked us to go to the sort of local food drop for them. We did it, was not quite what I expected. Got in line at the time our friends said to go. We were back about 50 cars and the handouts would not start for over a hour. Lots more came after we got there!

We got to the work area and all they asked for was amount of people you are picking up for and your zip code. Gave us about 50 pounds of what I would call good quality product. Included meat (a large rack of ribs), plenty of canned goods, cereal, peanut butter, yogurt, pasta. Just for the hell of it I checked the use by labels and found all the food I looked at had plenty of time left on the clock. Does not look like the outfit giving away this had any problem getting stuff.
