Mountain lion stalks elk hunter Glock wins

Years ago a friend of mine was bugling elk during black powder season. Her brother was watching from an adjoining ridge when he spotted a lion stalking her. He yelled, she turned around and she and the cat just stared at each other until it left. When Dave asked her why she didn’t just shoot it she said “aww it wasn’t gonna do anything”. Lydia was a riot lol.
She had two sons that she raised mostly on her own. One became a dr. The other was a bit of a con artist and a bit of a freeloader. When Lydia died he was expecting to inherit a modest but valuable house. It turned out that she had borrowed heavily against it over the last 8-10 yrs of her life to finance hunting and fishing trips all over the globe ;-D

A 44 Magnum a better choice in mountain lion/large predator country IMHO. But he had a gun.

Mountain lions are pretty fragile: a big one might tip the scales at as much as 150 pounds, most are 90-125 lbs.

Almost anything will kill one: 22lr and up will do. I’ve got a Colt Woodsman the last owner used in his predator control work here in Colorado. It’s taken lots of mountain lions and more than a few black bears.

No need for a magnum.

I’ll wager very few of them were actually trying to kill or hurt him. When dogs are used a .22 is often enough.
I carry something bigger if I think there is any possibility that an instant kill or disabling shot may be needed.

Elk hunting with a Glock M27 .40 ??

I thought the same thing Jimmy. Surely had a rifle. But then it hit me, he may have been bow hunting and had the compact Glock for back-up.

When the first shot did not run that cat off, he should have charged it screaming and controlled shooting as best he could. That souped-up kitty was going to eat him.

Nothing wrong with carrying a 40 for self defense, depending on the load you choose. I carried my M&P40 on my archery elk hunt this year. 15+1 was nice to have, even though I didn't need to use it.

yeah, but a 3.43" barrel is REALLY short (with respect to a Glock 27, which I have). I'd go full sized at the bare minimum. Or a 10mm, which I do.

Years ago, I bought a .44 Mag after a very close encounter with a cougar.
The .44 was what I wanted anyway at the time but if I knew then what I know now I'd have bought a 1911.
