I took a trip to Waco Texas Rangers hall of fame last Monday. It was amazing. I sat through a documentary and then I walked around the place. I took some pictures. But I will only post my favorites. I loved the antique weapons and gear. But my favorite stuff was the quotes. We could really use these men today.
My favorite revolver is actually Glenn Elliotts DPS stamped Model 66. I know it’s not as unique as all the other personalized weapons. But it stands out to me. One thing that has me scratching my head was the “pursuit gun 21”. That thing needs to be on forgotten weapons.

Two places in Texas not to be missed are the TR museum in Waco and the Nimitz/Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg. I have been told that the Pacific War museum has been considerably upgraded and expanded, but I have not been there in nearly 15 years to see for myself. For those who may not know, Fredericksburg was the home town of Admiral Nimitz. The museum is operated by the State of Texas.

We stopped for a picnic lunch and tour of the Texas Ranger museum years back driving from San Antonio back to VA. Been to Fredericksburg many times, yet have not been to the Pacific War Museum.

Fredericksburg is in a predominately German area, several excellent German restaurants there also. As I remember, there are three buildings in the complex plus a peace garden. I think it has the only Japanese midget submarine remaining in a very well-done display depicting Pearl Harbor. It is a first-class professional museum, not some cheap roadside attraction. It’s about a 90 minute drive NW of San Antonio.

My wife and I visited the Texas Ranger Museum in August of ‘21 and we absolutely loved it. So much firearm and organizational history in one spot. I also thought ahead for the trip and brought one of my department patches just in case they accepted them (I was not sure before actually going there). It now proudly hangs in the gift shop.

I spent most of that day in Waco. I also drove up to mount Carmel that same day. But they were closed. I need to take a trip to Fredericksburg one day. I been going through a restless phase since my friend gave me a free car. I can’t be still after spending over a year without a road worthy vehicle. I’m paranoid every time my car does something too.

I love it there. Even took my mother there when she visited last year. The nice thing about this museum is that exhibits always change. It's not super huge but there's always something new to explore and learn.

My favorite gun is probably Jim Riddles 1911. Very unique and good looking. Charlie Miller had one like it too. MTG's guns are also something else... it never gets old :)

I also like the Women in Uniform exhibit. These girls are more badass than most guys!

I think that 1911 is still there. I don’t see it in my pictures. But there was so much stuff I couldn’t picture them all.

Some of those women are cute too! Lol

My mother was a 5th generation Wacoan (?). When Dad retired in 1980 they moved there (Woodway) I have spent many a happy hour there drooling over every display in the building. My favorite displays are the guns donated by Texas rangers and County sheriffs. I gave up trying to decide which I liked the best.

There is a lot of history there. It is well worth the drive from anywhere in Texas. But don't plan on spending just 3 or 4 hours. You can easily spend the entire day and still wish you could have just another hour.

Apparently lots and lots of Rangers carried full size Colt .45 1911s through the years and nearly always with fancy grips. Mostly in blue but a lot in nickle and some with elaborate engraving. Also several .38 Supers and some Commanders and maybe a few Browning HPs but apparently not many Rangers liked the 9mm back then.

When I lived in Midland TX in the late 1970s-1980s, there was a Texas Ranger Company headquartered there that covered most of West Texas. It wasn’t unusual to see those Rangers. As I remember, at that time those I saw all carried Government Models. I can’t swear they were all .45s, but they could have been, and I have no idea what they carry now. I imagine whatever they want.

A little research reveals that the current “official” handgun of the Texas DPS is the Sig P320 in 9mm. However, Texas Rangers have the latitude to carry any personal guns they wish. I’d guess most stick with a .45 GM. Or maybe a Sig P320 in .45.
